On the Grid : Psarakos

"It may not be quite as well known as some other bigger markets, but this gem located in Clarendon St is just off bustling High St. A successful shop at Psarakos will have you leaving with an abundance of fruit, veg and groceries all at very reasonable prices. You can even drop your watch in for repairs while you stroll through the aisles of the bottleshop in search of a cheap bottle of grappa. Photography - Peter Tarasiuk" - Sherwood Gutterz

These geezers have everything. Brings back now hazy memories of a childhood spent in Europe waiting for my mum to stop marvelling at sausages various, and for my dad to stop questioning anchovies. Time stretched to eternity. Yet! here now I am, marvelling at all the same produce and more. If you're ever in need of a reasonably priced spinach or 20L of olive oil, Psarakos is your mate. You will leave with more than you came for. Very rad, very cool.

Google
It's a great market, although the fruit and veg market is horrible I bought these $7 Blueberries!! And they were fine in the store and then they were mouldy 2 hours after buying them and they won't let me return them also it clearly says refrigerate please on the pack but it was out in the open. The deli is great though

Been shopping here for over 20 years! Great variety of fruit & veg. Excellent prices. They even have a bottle shop & their own free parking lot. Fab!

Google
Great selection of dry goods like corn chips, snack foods and a good variety of packaged nuts at fair prices with several Australian grown nut products. Walking thru the meat section to get to the veggie section is s bit off putting. The smell of meat and seafood is really strong. The fruit and veggies is wide and varied and fresh too. I think they have good turnover. Good deli too. Also a supermarket to the right that I did not see or was made aware till the 3rd visit! Opening hours are quite good too.

It’s not fair. All the shops suffer here because the fruit and veg is soooooooooo terrible. If it were good, customers would shop at Psarakos Thornbury more frequently and the whole place would be more prosperous. The fruit/veg section’s MO: Either the fruit/veg is rotting or the shop assistants are awful. It oscillates between these two. It’s always a bad experience. I tend to venture in once every two years, forgetting just how bad it is. But the fruit/veg section never fails to deliver as today’s experience demonstrated YET AGAIN. I went today and it was bad. Before going in, I felt happy and upbeat. I love seeing the staff at Going Nuts, one of my favourite shops in Thornbury. They are friendly. They are happy. They have great products. I was filled with optimism. I felt positive. So I ventured in to the fruit/veg. I only needed carrots and celery. What could possibly go wrong? But after leaving that section I felt frustrated and resentful 😕. No longer happy. Oh boy. I won’t make that mistake again!

I didnt want to write this review , but you forced my hand. 1. The fruit shop, this is the only place ive ever shopped were you can buy a nice looking piece of fruit, whether it be an apple, onion, pear, garlic ... you take it home, cut into it and its rotting from the inside out. Its a theme. 2. The deli, which is terrific but you leave stale bread on the shelve on purpose. Are you for real, you actually want to sell a $1.50 hard stale koulouri instead of tossing it and replacing them with fresh ones. Your just taking the piss out of people. The bread i can say , pick wisely but the fruit shop issue is not acceptable.

Google
This is a brilliant market! It's got everything you could possibly want in fresh produce and groceries. It's not the sort of place you'd shop of you're looking for super cheap prices, but it's is the sort of place to go if you're looking for something a little fancy, a bit higher end than your regular supermarket. It's like a massive Harris Farm, but with alcohol and patisserie and a butcher inside. They have dry goods too, and international snacks. We'll worth a visit.

Google
I love Thornbury, and there is a certain charm in the 1950's post war charm of the surly cashiers at the market--it's like film noir. Each adventure I look for the woman with the scowl, appreciate her sullen face, but avoid being served by her at all costs. And grabbing bags of cucumbers and herbs on special is great, but tbh, the freshness of the veg is dubious. It's convenient at least and I go there to experience the particular atmosphere that most locals understand.

Yelp
I rang Psarakos to enquire about a special on wine & the male who answered was very rude & abrupt. He told me to get my facts straight & hung up on me! The worst customer service ever!! I will be going to Dan Murphy's from now on!!

Yelp
I visited the produce section a few times in summer and the selection is good. They searched my wallet sized purse (didn't search any other peoples' bags) and caused a fuss with me because my credit card wasn't signed despite the fact that I showed a photo ID. I wouldn't return with a signed card because there's no point in patronizing a place where I'm treated like a criminal.

Yelp
It doesn't look much from outside, but Psarakos Brothers Vege Barn is a little bastion of all things fruit and vegetable in the inner north. Stretching over a couple of football fields' worth of real estate, the place is chocked full with produce ranging from your run of the mill 'Australian'-style spuds and onions, to a wide range of Asian varieties and further regional obscurities. The stuff here is pretty much non-organic, but is usually in pretty good shape at least for a week after purchase. The big difference here are the price-points. Psarakos provide their veges in bulk, so it pays to sift through the bins, but the prices match and even often better those seen at Preston or Victoria markets. Plus there is very little hassle-factor in shopping here, with ample parking and a very relaxed overall vibe about the place. A downside is the opening hours which are limited and Saturdays can be a little hectic. But if you hate the market rush and chow through a couple of bags of greens a week, you can walk out of here with two bags full of groceries for under forty bucks.

Yelp
Your phone mannerism is atrocious, you answer the phone as if the customer is bothering you, without assisting at all you hang up and then when we call back you refuse to answer. This is not good business at all... maybe you can learn to be more human and accommodating to your customers!!

Yelp
Tucked away behind the corner of High and Clarendon st in Thornbury is the Psarakos fresh produce market. It's not the local organic carbon neutral touchy feely farmers market but just a reliable supplier of reasonably priced fruit and veg. There is a good selection of Asian vegetables, exotic fruit and a few random bits you wont find in Woolies. It is definitely cheaper to shop here than a chain supermarket, the produce feels fresher and the vibe is more wholesome. Just outside the fruit/veg section are specialty stores including individual red meat, chicken and seafood butchers and a whole store devoted to nuts. The staff knows their product and always offers friendly service. With a free car park across the road I find it entirely preferable to supermarket shopping.

Yelp
As a regular early Saturday morning Psarakos shopper, I can confirm the great range of fruit and veg, and the quality meats in the arcade. But I was never that much of a fan of the little supermarket off to one side... ... until last Saturday - wow, what a change! I decided to chance it and go see if the place had any buffalo mozarella, and I walked into a completely transformed and renovated supermarket, only just opened in its new bright white shiny clean amazing form. And when I say 'bright white' make sure you are wearing sunnies when you first walk in, there must be 400 fluro's fitted to the new gloss white ceiling. There is a great range of dry goods, and what is now one of the best deli's in the Northcote/Thornbury area. And a large fridge of cheese - including buffalo mozarella, buffalo feta, and other bufallo cheeses.

Yelp
Psarakos is kinda hidden. It's actually on Clarendon street. Why the original designers of this space and allotment did not have the shop frontage on high street remains a curiosity. Regardless of fact, and kinda being a little non-descript from the outside, Psarakos is actually quite extensive in terms of it's range for fresh fruit, vegetables and produce. Its on par with some of the bigger markets' prices. There's also a little delicatessen attached on site, with pretty much everything you need and probably more. It's definitely not short on choice. You'll find a few other bits and pieces around the place- meat and seafoods. Not to mention that there's also an excellent liquor section in the Fruit and vegetables area which has an impressive selection of spirits and wines for it's size. I've actually found a lot of my go to favourites on the shelves. There's a lot to find here, including Mexican drinking chocolate and Simon coll xolates.

Yelp
I shopped there for the first time today and didn't see the signage they had displayed at the green grocer. I had a quick taste of 1 apricot and approached the counter to pay for the rest of my groceries. I was told bluntly to pay for the apricot. Which I offered to pay for the whole kilo as she said I already had a half of the non ripen apricot and should be charged for whole apricots. Again I offered to pay for the whole kilo. I hope that the 15 cents for the apricot was them losing a potential long term customer. I will stick to Preston Market as the vendors are a lot happier. The butchers and fish mongers are a lot more expensive than Preston market. Will not be coming back.

Yelp
Have been buying our green groceries here for some years now. Easily accessible, a wide range and, by and large, good quality produce at very good prices. Occasionally the quality slips a little but only, I suspect, because they are trying to negotiate the fine line between quality and price, and want to keep their prices down. Certainly much better value than you will find in a supermarket.

Yelp
well all of the nice comments will soon have this bad one amongst them . As a family in the local area we have been shopping at Psarakos since it opened so you can imagine grand parents, parent and of course the next generation and all of the European community. On the weekend I received the most distasteful service from Psarakos Meats. My mother purchased some scotch fillet which when cooked was the worst I have ever had, obviously sold at top dollar at $28 a kilo but not an A grade cut. So I went with my poor mum to just let them know that the quality was not good and just wanted to let them know. No mention of a refund or anything like that at this stage. Well it started with, it was fresh when it left here. Obviously the sales person had an issue with understanding the difference between quality and freshness. She looks over at her boss who is disinterested and shrugs his shoulders. I then try to explain what I am trying to say and it ended up in a screaming match with the owner saying there is bad meat and good meat you just got bad meat. Well then I just wanted to...... and said they could keep their meat and customer service. So the moral of the story is that we are encouraged to support our local stores but it seams that they also just want to line their pockets. I would have just accepted a little interest from the owner and may have left it at that. Also they are in a habit of not giving receipts which for the elderly makes it even harder to express their concern. We always say that's not the Australian way or is it? what are we evolving into? I would like others to comment so I can send what others think to the owner. It sound petty for just a small thing but but I hate complacency

Yelp
My new favourite shopping spot. Psarakos (Thornbury) Greengrocers have a great selection of fruit & veg. The complex also houses a jewellery repair or watch repair not taken much notice but I know its there. There is a bakery, a fishmonger, a butcher, a poultry butcher and a nut/health food shop. However my new favourite area is the mediterranean store that reopened just before Christmas last year (2012). You can go down to Psarakos and do your shopping and not even have to go to Coles or Woolworths brilliant. I go to Psarakos because I can't bear to face the traffic at Preston market anymore.

Yelp
$10 minimum for EFT in the grocery section. Tried to buy $9.05 worth of items, was barred and told to go and select "something else" to make up the $10. I put the items back. I will not return, as I refuse to support a business that tries to milk money out of me for items I don't require in order to satisfy their arbitrary rules around electronic transactions.

Yelp
Went shopping at psarakos found ravioli gone off and moldy will never go there again
