So we made it back to Maui and the "Road to Hana" was once again part of the itinerary. The Puaa Kaa State Wayside Park was the most convenient stop we took during our first go. There were plenty of parking spaces, real bathrooms, picnic tables, and a couple of beautiful waterfalls! However, our group used the Shaka Guide app on our latest trip and this was not included as a destination. How did you miss this, Shaka!?!?
Relatively small compared to the other falls, the first waterfall was just along the roadside. No one paid too much attention to it because the better option was just a few steps away, so I took some time experimenting on slow shutter speeds to get a silky flow on my pictures. No tripod and no ND filter - no problem as there were no people, too.
The second waterfall had a big pool which was why everyone was in a hurry to get there. It was not as dramatic as The Three Bears, but it was easily accessible and parking was not an issue. There were people swimming and going under the waterfall.
Maybe the Shaka app had a different criteria, but this was definitely a good spot to get the limbs stretched out and the bladder emptied. The waterfalls were a big bonus.
