"Next to El Retiro Park, the neoclassical granite Puerta de Alcalá was built in 1778 as a main city entrance; it has five arches with different designs on each side and predates the Brandenburg Gate and the Arc de Triomphe." - Matthew Kepnes

A Stunning Historical Landmark Puerta de Alcalá is a must-see when visiting Madrid. Its impressive architecture and rich history make it one of the city’s most iconic sights. Beautiful both day and night, it’s the perfect spot for a photo or a peaceful stroll through Retiro Park nearby. Truly a symbol of Madrid’s elegance and charm!

After so many visits to Madrid, I finally had the chance to see it in all its glory — two years later, and it was worth the wait. It had been under renovation during my previous visits, so seeing it fully restored, surrounded by blooming tulips in the heart of spring, was truly a spectacle. An iconic landmark full of history and elegance. Whether you pass by during the day or stop for photos at sunset, it captures the timeless beauty of the city like few other places.

This is a beautiful monument in Madrid, Spain. One of those places that are a “must see” when visiting this gorgeous and regal city. It was recently renovated, a work that took well over a year to complete, but so worth it. La Puerta de Alcalá is the starting point to one of Spain’s longest streets, La Calle de Alcalá. In this famous square, many events take place during the year, and it is right across from another “must visit” site in Madrid, El Parque del Retiro. The famous Calle de Serrano, known for its many chic boutiques and high end shops, also ends at this square. You can see the other very famous square when you are standing at this site, La Plaza de Cibeles, with its famous fountain and beautiful buildings.

Great place , at the entrance of the park of the crystal Palace , which of course has a lot of entrances but this is the best . Next to the great lake and Alfonso II monument a great way to go through the park . Also very close to Cybele Palace , and other monument and a 10 minutes walk to the Prado museo and Museo Naval

I wanted to visit this landmark ever since I was a child. I remember listening to a Spanish song titled 'La Puerta de Alcalá." I got to listen to this song finally next to the landmark. Highly recommend a visit to this site, especially for those history enthusiasts. Don't forget to take a picture in front of it because "ahí está, ahí está viendo pasar el tiempo."

Madrid, Puerta de Alcalá, is a Neo-classical gate in the Plaza de la Independencia. Around the year: 1774, King Charles commissioned Francesco Sabatini to construct a monumental gate in the city wall through which an expanded road to the city of Alcalá was to pass, replacing an older, smaller, gate that stood nearby. It was inaugurated in: 1778. The ornamental details were sculpted by Francisco Gutiérrez made of white stone from Colmenar. The architectural elements are chiefly made of granite from Segovia.
