This is the Cerveceria Chapultepec of hostels: cheap, efficient, and totally absent of culture. I’ll admit that I liked this place when I was here four years ago, though whether it’s gotten worse or I’ve simply matured since then is harder to say (probably a bit of both).
If you’re fresh out of college, on a budget, looking for a place to party, and want someone else to plan day trips for you, this is genuinely the place to be. If, however, you’re a bit more mature, are here for more than just partying, and want to actually connect with San Cristobal and not restrict yourself to a tiny gringo bubble within it, then you should avoid at all costs.
Pros: awesome coffee, cheap not-bad food, generally cost-effective, can meet lots of ppl, many bar promos
Cons: disrespectful guests, vindictive staff (some of them, really just a few volunteers, I had zero issues with the adult Mexican workers), demographic of obnoxious 20-22yo alcoholics, won’t let you store bags even for a few days between stays.
Ultimately, I would say this place is a victim of its own success — they run at near-constant full capacity, and as such can get away with sketchy behavior that a less popular hostel would be ruined by.
