On the Grid : Puerto Rican Cultural Center

"The PRCC has been looking out for the hearts and minds of the neighborhood since the late 60s, hosting and sponsoring public art, programs and events, and generally promoting Borinquen culture and spirit. Housed in an old church, the PRCC oversees some outstanding programs and projects, including a resource center for homeless LGBTQ youth, an alternative high school, bilingual daycare, and Chicago’s oldest Puerto Rican mural, La Crucifixion de Don Pedro. They’re also the brains behind La Casita de Don Pedro, a park designed to resemble the Puerto Rican flag from above." - Firebelly Design

My tenant has not paid rent for 3 years and has 5-6 credit card debt judgements. But she has money market account and drives a nice car to her work at downtown. Puerto Rican Cultural Center lied to Cook County Sheriff Social Service that they are social workers (they are not), and they delayed eviction. Instead of finding emergency shelter, I waited until Puerto Rican Cultural Center to find her normal rental process. And she found a new home, and they moved out by 2 large trucks. But she doesn't want to give up my house, and uses it as love motel at night. Now Cook Country Sheriff's case worker is trying to find a new home for her (tenant and her daughter lied to Cook County Sheriff that they did not find a place which was already done by Puerto Rican Cultural Center.). My tenant and her daughter's lying is one thing. But this Puerto Rican Cultural Center is not doing anything informing Cook County Sheriff Social Service, let government resource wasted.

This communities cultural center is amazingly curated. There are events every couple weeks it seems, and they feature artists from all over. I take away so much each time I visit. It’s an integral part of the neighborhood. Visitors should respect the culture.

Do not bother if you are not PR or don't speak Spanish.

My tenant has been abusing the system by not paying rents for years. She has several credit card debt judgements and eviction order. Purerto Rican Cultural Center falsely contacted Cook County Sheriff Social Service falsely claiming they are "social workers" and "both children" are disabled. While eviction is stopped, Puerto Rican Cultural Center found a new home for the tenant 2 weeks ago. Neighbors stated to police that large truck came twice and moved their belongings and childrens no longer live there. However, tenant and her daughter lied to Cook County Sheriff as if they still live and they did not find new home. Therefore, Cook County Sheriff assigned a case worker to find a new home for them (although they already found new home and moved.) Neighbors further stated to police that tenant and her boyfriend sneak in at night without children and took appliance. Appliances are not tenants', and I reported police. I requested Puerto Rican Cultural Center to contact Cook County Sheriff that they already found tenant a new home, no resource of Cook County Sheriff should be wasted. They have refused.

This place is a big misterny. They make once per year Sangria fest with expensive tickets and valet parking but besides that they never participate in any neighborhood cultural live. Most of the time the place is closed.

PRCC is a wonderful community based organization. The staff are embedded in community and committed to the health, wellness and betterment of transgender women.

This address is not actually the Puerto Rican Cultural Center- it is part of Dr Pedro Albizu Campos High School. We often get visitors who are looking for the cultural center. This is not it.
