On the Grid : Puerto Rico Food & Liquors

"Over 800 varieties of craft beers are jammed into this tiny sliver of a shotgun bodega, alongside spirits, wine, general consumables, weekly homemade salsa that never disappoints, and a year-round selection of magically-always-perfectly-ripe avocados. Store owner Junior will charm your pants off regaling you with stories about hot peppers, obscure beer varietals, and how best to cook that zucchini on the grill." - Firebelly Design

Google
Nice selection of liquor to choose from. No matter who is on the clock when I have visited, I have been greeted by a friendly and knowledgeable staff. With all the larger corporations taking over the world. It is a great feeling to still be able to walk into a local neighborhood store and talk with real people from our community.

Google
Amazing local grocer and liquor store. They have a great selection and have staff picks. Have a question? Just ask! They are super helpful. Highly recommend.

Google
Genuinely the closest thing this neighborhood has to community. Everyone is super nice and friendly! Treat me like family. PLEASEEEE owners if you’re reading, the final cherry on top for this place would be selling subs/sandwiches like a bodega. Or some sort of grab and go food.

Google
This place is awesome! The owners of the shop are super friendly and nice! 5 stars

Google
Great selection of craft beers. Convenient when you need an ingredient quickly. Decent produce selection. Even offered to stock items I preferred. The guys are all so friendly and helpful. I miss living closeby. Best Bodega in town! Junior is a great guy!

Google
Can’t beat this place. Well curated all around, but especially beer, wine, and liquor. Very fair prices and amazing staff

Sweetest employees ever always so kind and looking out for their customers. Good selection of stuff as well!

Google
Very nice establishment, it is one of my favorite stores here in Chicago. It has a superb selection of liquor, beer, wine and its cheese fridge. The staff is very friendly and seems to know each customer for their hospitality. So, if you happen to drive past this area, why don't you drop by here at Puerto Rico Food & Liquors, and try their hidden treasures that adults can find, beers.

Yelp
Amazing cornerstore has everything you need! The owner is extremely friendly and is great when you need something in a pinch. Check it out!

Yelp
Puerto Rico Food & Liquors is a hidden gem for any craft beer lover. They've got a wide assortments of bottles from a 2014 aged ale from Deschutes to the 2018 Bramble Rye BCBS. In comparison to the store's square footage, there's a huge selection of local beers, bottled beers and aged stouts. The only knock I have against it is that the A/C was out which made perusing in the store really hot, so it made me a little skeptical at how well the aged beers are doing in this kind of environment.

Yelp
I found this place only because of my friend who lived above it (isn't that convenient?). Had no clue that Junior was also an owner of this place (since often he was the one behind the counter). What a great human being! Always smiling, friendly, polite, and very helpful (I had a hard time picking or knowing exactly what I want quite a few times.... Woman). Great selection of alcohol beverages (beer, cider, wine, vodka, whiskey, cognac, gin and more... pardon, my knowledge of types of alcohol ran out... including some from my home country, Ukraine, or neighbour -- Poland). Besides alcohol and tobacco, the store had all kinds of groceries (from vegetables and frozen food to toilet paper), at very reasonable prices and good quality. This place is a hidden gem that you should find!

Yelp
Best beer/liquor store in the land! Cheers to Junior for changing with the time and gentrification (Unfortunate in my opinion). This is the place for cellar type of brews, difficult to find varients, imports thar rarely make it out here, and a variety of local beers. Also, it is a corner store with veggies, fruits, and locals goods. Sometimes there are beer tasting in appreciation for the customers and families and it is the cherry on top os this local institution. Folks that live in the hood understand and others have no idea of this gold mine.

Yelp
This is a great neighborhood liquor store! Junior and the staff at PR food and liquor are very knowledgeable, accommodating and most importantly great people. The selection of craft beer and liquor is surprisingly vast for a small store, usually shipments come in on Tuesdays and Thursdays and can sometimes have very hard to find beers and liquors. They also make their own guacamole and have tamales on the weekends. This isn't only a liquor store but has everything else that you would expect from a convenience store.

Yelp
This is a very delayed review, as we moved from Chicago over 2 years ago, but I cannot praise Junior and his shop enough. Some of the nicest people I met in Chicago right here. Amazing craft beer selection. He gets bottles that big stores can't get, thanks to his relationships and determination. If you are a craft beer person in Humboldt Park, Ukranian Village, West Town, Logan Park. etc. it is in your best interest to swing by here. Also, make sure to grab a bag of homemade tamales on Saturday morning from the cooler by the counter. They are piping hot, fresh, and delicious!

Yelp
I went in to buy something, and to exchange cash. The person working there was really nice and helpful. Good people.

Yelp
The owner lives close by so when I came in with a question about a beer they had he showed up and looked for it. He even call the distributor to see if it was available! They're all super nice there and have an AMAZING selection of craft beer!! Keep that Marz beer rolling in and you'll always have a customer that drives from near O'hare to shop there!

Cecilia E.

Yelp
hours are wrong and they never answer the phone which is particularly annoying since they are also a UPS access point

Yelp
I love going to this liquor store not only because of the great selection but also because of the owners knowledge. I love trying different IPA's and everytime I go in I ask for a recommendation. Junior, the owner, has great feedback on all his craft beers and helps me pick something new or different everytime. Junior also makes everyone that passes through feel like part of his family, which makes his liquior store such a great addition to the community. P.S. In addition to beer, wine and liquior they also sell a nice little selection of fresh produce, cheeses and other specialty items.
google avatar

Yelp
This place is friendly and informative! Junior, the owner, has been in the neighborhood for 20 years and he welcomes all of his clients - new or old with a warm smile. This isn't your average corner bodega. You walk in and are instantly greeted with a fresh produce section. To your (soft) right is rows upon rows of quality craft beer and a small frozen section in the back. I've been told he'll order anything you could think of that he doesn't already carry, but he's got everything I need!

Kevin P.

Yelp
I cannot speak highly enough of this establishment, it is truly my favorite store in all of Chicago. It's not just that it's like a candy store for adults due to its excellent selection of liquor, beer, wine and it's well stocked cheese fridge, but it has pretty much anything you'd need in a pinch. It's also just a fun place to walk into, despite being a corner store it has the energy of a neighborhood tavern where everyone seems to know one another. Junior and the rest of the guys who run the place are always super friendly and helpful and more than anything they're the reason this is such a great place to pop into to grab a six pack of beer and a bottle of Fernet.
google avatar

Jerelyn L.

Yelp
Amazing corner store across the street from us. Great fresh produce. Reasonable prices. Is helpful and engaging!
google avatar

Thomas C.

Yelp
THEY HAVE ALL KINDS OF BEERS YOU'VE ONLY READ ABOUT, if at all, on the shelf!!!!!!!!!!! Saw them reviewed on Chicago's best and was still skeptical that they could really have the beer offerings that would blow me away ..... well I was blown away. If you are into beer (and that's beer, not bud, not miller ... although they DO have those too), check this place out. Shoulid be 10 stars.
google avatar

Yelp
The best beer selection anywhere close to Humboldt Park. You're always greeted by friendly staff (and sometimes neighbors) when you visit. It's perfect to have this around the corner from you - especially when it's inconvenient to get to a big box grocery store, as they have a pretty solid selection of produce and groceries as well. I love this place so much, that I've re-named it "super happy fun place" and my friends know exactly what I'm referencing!
google avatar

Yelp
Great selection and reasonable prices... TONS of craft brews Decent wine selection Plus fresh fruit and vegetables aside from typical snacks !! The owner is cool as hell too!

Yelp
I just moved to an apartment around the corner and have to say that I really love this store. Lots of beer and liquor, great selection of sours, great pico (and guac though Ive only seen it twice), and surprisingly a lot of other groceries (e.g. dried peppers, rice, soy chorizo, tofu, cheeses, fresh produce). Everything is pretty fairly priced imo too. The people who work here are incredibly nice, and as an added positive they are happy to look into getting a beer for you from their distributor. This store has really added to my positive experience in the neighborhood so far.

Yelp
Impressive beer selection -especially the bombers. Very friendly staff. A little secret: Each weekend, they sell the best fresh salsa you can find.

Yourgo A.

Yelp
This place is really awesome. The dude was a whiskey connoisseur and gave me perfect advice on which whiskey to get. It was like having a sommelier in a small little liquor store.
google avatar

Yelp
Junior hooked it up! Love to support local businesses. Would definitely come back again for the prices and customer service.
google avatar

Yelp
Small place with many things! Snacks in abundance and great liquor selection. Staff super friendly and helpful.

Yelp
Amazing craft beer and corner store selections. I am always impressed by how many options they carry in there and the variety. Many times I skip going to cvs since the Puerto Rican Market has it for the same or lower price. Junior is also so personable and if you want him to start carrying anything just ask. Many times on Fridays he will have a alcohol vendor in giving out samples.
google avatar

Yelp
Viva Bodega! Hell, this doesn't even qualify as a bodega. They have fresh produce, Nutella, Perrier, a Goya distribution center (not to be confused with the music distribution co.), and Sangre de Torro wine in one stop shopping. My basic food groups. So, to hell with Jewel. They are ultra ultra nice and you might even get called sweetie or honey, which I don't in the least find patronizing, just endearing and sort of a lagniappe for shopping there. Kind words (sans creepiness) are hard to come by these days, and that alone is worth shopping there for. I feel like this is the store my parents used to shop at when they were just starting out (with good wholesome values, heh) And the salsa is the bomb.

Yelp
The guys that run this place are super nice... It took me a few visits to realize how much stuff they actually cram into this little store, but they have a little of just about everything. As others have pointed out, they have an unusually good beer selection, a few decent wines.. They do have a butcher but it never seems to be open when I'm there.. I don't know if it's a weekday thing or if I just visit at the wrong times, or if you just ask the guy at the register... not sure how that works out.. They carry the limited edition Toasted Coconut Sesame Brittle ice cream which is pretty darn good.... They seem to always have both really ripe plantains and plantains that need a few days.. They never seem to want to give out change... so I think I owe them 28 cents about 5 times over. I concur, their fresh salsa (it's in the produce refrigerator if you're there looking...) is pretty great stuff! (someone else mentioned in their review that maybe it's a weekend only thing though? not sure) ...I'm not a beer guy, but if you are this is a great place. They have a vast selection of all kinds of beers... Microbrews and the norm, it's all covered. They close a little early some nights... so I sometimes call if it's late, and they always say "yah we'll stay here for you!" ... I think it's a joke they're playing on me, they probably are staying there either way... I think they sit around drinking after... but they still say it so it's funny!

Yelp
I'm one of the four luckiest people in Chicago. I live above this place. (The other three being my boyfriend and two neighbors). This isn't your average corner store. This is a community at a street corner!! Junior of course is amazing and so friendly and wants every customer to have the best experience possible. He loves his liquors and beers, so if they don't have something you want, ask him for it, I bet it'll be on the shelf next week. Most of the time we only do half a grocery shop at the grocery store, knowing that we'll get fresh, cheap stuff "downstairs". Make friends with the guys who hang out here and you've got yourself a small family. I feel safe in an area that changes daily and if the store wasn't there, I probably wouldn't feel the same. Just stay away during Puerto Rican Fest...those boys get wild!
google avatar

Jason B.

Yelp
Sweet jeebus they got everything a beer geek would want! I mean, like, everything. Lots of stuff the bigger shops don't have... I don't know how they manage to scoop 'em on the beer, but they sure do. Stopped in on a lark as I was headed elsewhere... thought I would have to pick up PBR but the Rogue neon suggested I might be able to find better here. I was totally unprepared for the amount of beer - great beer - inside. Bottle selection is fantastic. I would drive out of the way to buy beer here.
google avatar

Brian J.

Yelp
This place is super friendly, has an good beer, wine and liquor selection and a nice assortment of produce, canned goods, spices, etc. Also, I never realized there was a butcher in the back until recently but check it out - great meats! I haven't had the pleasure of tasting the salsa or tamales yet but it's on my list for the next week or two. I'll report back soon! ***UPDATE 4/1/08*** Damn, that's good salsa.
google avatar

Yelp
From the outside.. this place seems like a typical corner dive store . A place to get your smokes and a 6-pack of busch. At Puerto Rico, you can get those things.. but it deserves more credit that that. This place has an awesome selection of craft and local brews. Seriously. Junior will order whatever you don't see on the shelf. Nice guys running the place and again.. awesome selection of beer. I haven't bought anything else from here..(just beer). My fiancee's sister and boyfriend live down the street, so I'm in there with them or alone, grabbing beer. But I've found myself traveling from my neck of the woods just for the selection and to give Junior the business. He deserves it. If you go.. get a 6-er of Trout Slayer by Big Sky Brewery. Delish.
google avatar

Amy Elizabeth S.

Yelp
Before I moved to this neighborhood, I heard people refer to this corner store by a million different names from "Puerto Rico" to "Junior's" to "that place on the corner that makes the best f*cking salsa in the city." I am a little hesitant to tell folks that it is true... they make the best f*cking salsa in the city. They bring a huge batch in on Fridays, and I am lucky to find a rogue container of it on Saturday afternoon. The shit is good, and it goes fast. And if salsa isn't enough to turn you on, perhaps the choice selection of beers will do. I swear, I thought my boyfriend wanted to make out with the "brew buyer" for stocking some harder to find, probably really hoppy and/or sour, slightly more costly brew. Apparently I just don't understand, but my "beer snob" boyfriend does and he adores this place. Personally, I think they have a great wine selection, but I am not going to make out with anyone because of it. The weekend tamales are a treat, and the guys who work there (one of which is "Junior") are friendly, funny, and will shoot the shit with you for a minute before they cut you loose.

Yelp
supes cute little shop down the block from mi casa. GREAT beer selection, if you're into das biers. me, i'm a miller high life kinda gal now, so you know, i'm fance. i needed sustenance for a late lunch on sunday - two shakes of a lamb's tail later, here i am picking up pork chorizo, 'tillas and a huge smart water for sunning times up on the roofdeck. perfect. they also have basic produce and an aisle of non-perishable goods. love that this convenience is tres convenient.

Yelp
I love walking into this place in January and looking at the snapshots of beautiful warm Puerto Rican beaches and lamenting with the guys about how the hell we ended up in Chicago in January. Then I buy an avocado for 99 cents maybe $1.19, pick up a tomato, some garlic and onions, some salsa, my favorite Rancherito Chips and maybe some beer. They have dug fresh cilantro out of the back more than once for me. And the thing that is so amazing about this place is that it's a little market that you would expect to have liquor, beer, and porn- but oh no there's so much more. I must admit that it may not seem like the cleanest place to some people but it works for me. If you can't find it ask the guys at the counter. They're awesome. I always leave this place smiling.
google avatar

Irene L.

Yelp
Plain and simple: this place rules. I often stumble in here to pick up some random grocery staples and leave with like $30 worth of craft beer. Their selection is great, and it's hard not to find something I want to try. Furthermore, all the guys here are genuinely friendly. I'm going to miss frequenting this place when I move out of the neighborhood. Only downfall is that it's cash only right now, but Junior gave my friend a discount when he had to use the ATM anyway. So that was cool.
google avatar

Pita Von C.

Yelp
All the craft beer and wines you would want for your own personal stash. Don't neglect the liquor, well priced and good brands. I do get their homemade salsa and Topo Chico.
google avatar

Laura P.

Yelp
Amazing selection of both beer and some gourmet eats! The fridge is always filled with awesome 6 packs, and the food fridge has everything you need to make a home made charcuterie board + the staples needed for every day. Every kind of bomber you could ask for, and if they don't have it you can ask Junior to order it for you. He is the heart and soul of the shop and the neighborhood! I have come here again and again while in Humboldt park and will continue to drop by.

Riley O.

Yelp
Love having this place on my corner. Location is so convenient, and they have a wide variety of products and even produce. The employees/owner always go above and beyond for every customer.
google avatar

G L.

Yelp
This is probably the only establishment I've seen on Yelp that has an unbroken 5-star rating. There's a good reason for this. Junior has all my weird beer-snob beers in stock, is an encyclopedia of beer knowledge and a suuuuper nice dude, and occasionally pressures me to buy those sugar covered guava pastry things. If this place ever closes down, I'm moving out of Ukrainian Village. MAYBE OUT OF CHICAGO.
google avatar

Todd F.

Yelp
I traveled to Chicago from Boston for work and had mapped out places to hit on my free time. It happened to be right around when BCBS was making its way into the market. I hit a few of the bigger name places like West Lakeview, where no one working spoke to me and a few Binny's who both said that they had BCBS but had not decided when to put it out. Really? So I took a shot and went over to PRFL. THIS PLACE WAS ALL THAT THE OTHERS WERE NOT. I was greeted by the owner right away who hooked me up with the BCBS and offered to take me through the shelves and show me some of his favorite locals and regional beers. When I mentioned I was from Boston, I was treated like a long lost son and he actually gave me a couple of locals to try later on back at the hotel. These guys love their beer, love people who love beer and their town, and care deeply about making sure you leave happy with your visit. I cannot recommend this place enough. Do yourself a favor and check it out if you haven't before.
google avatar

Dave G.

Yelp
Hands down the best "bodega" style shop I've ever seen in Chicago. The craft beer selection is extensive, dominating the shelf space of the store's shotgun layout. Sure, they have macros, they have wine, and they have a deli counter in the back. But come for what they're best at: craft beer, seasonable beer, and large formats. While the selection isn't as extensive as a Binny's, you simply cannot compete on gusto per square foot. Junior is also the best: friendly, wedded to his job, and loves his customers.
google avatar

Kent S.

Yelp
This place is amazing. I can't even begin to know how to write a review. For a place that is sandwiched between the gray zone where Humboldt Park and Ukrainian Village collide, there is no more well refined beer selection within walking distance. Others are good. Others are larger. But nothing is quite like this. Price point is great. The staff is friendly. The loiterers are friendly. There seriously is no better beer selection in the neighborhood.
google avatar

Rick S.

Yelp
This place rocks good music good vibe. Always a good time. Awesome craft beer and wine selection. Jr. The owner is probably one of the coolest dudes ever! Knows his shit the place is legit!
google avatar

Jan M.

Yelp
Hands down the best corner store in Chicago! Friendly service, fair prices, homemade guacamole and salsa on Fridays! If they don't have what you're looking for, just ask!

Bill G.

Yelp
Best place for craft beers! They get Spiteful and Pipeworks brewery! Also other good stuff; 3Floyds, Surly, Prairie. Plus, the prices are fair. Best produce!! Have other groceries that a local corner store should have; produce in my opinion is better than that Mariano's place.
google avatar

Lisa O.

Yelp
This place has a wonderful selection of craft beer and wines. You can also find a great selection on produce. There's service is excellent and super friendly. I love this Mom and Pops corner shop.
google avatar

Yesenia R.

Yelp
I have lived in many neighborhoods around the city but this store is my favorite neighborhood store! staff is always helpful, friendly and up beat. If a liquor that I was looking for is missing they make sure to ask and try to stock it for next time. I go for things ranging from butter, sour cream, garlic, and bell peppers - to sake, wine or tequila. They have a little bit of EVERYTHING!
google avatar

Doug P.

Yelp
Often known as "2 brothers" named after the two guys running the place, this is about the best corner store you could possibly hope to live next to. Excellent salsa made fresh each Friday, good selection of beer and wines that keeps getting better. And Zubrowka and 3G tequila that you must try! If you're ever not sure about an alcohol purchase, they'll let you try it in the store.
google avatar

Doug S.

Yelp
Normally I don't bother writing a review if I totally agree with everything that's already been said, but yes, this is a 5 star corner store. Yes, the salsa is great. Yes, the staff is great. Yes, if you don't find what you're looking for and ask them about it, they will probably have it next week. And finally (I think I'm contributing something new here), if you want to get on their beer selection mailing list, just mention it in an email to prfl@rocketmail.com. PS Thanks for stocking the Goose Island Ginger Beer, making Moscow Mule my drink of 2011.
google avatar

Juliana R.

Yelp
This is an awesome convenient store on my street that has the most basic items and the best craft beer! Great to have place like this so close to home, especially when we have company over. All the guys here are super cool an friendly as well
google avatar

Alex A.

Yelp
Junior runs a tight shop with more craft brews than any corner store in the city. Prices are solid and they have good prices on the standard American get drunk beers like miller, bud, coors etc. To top it off they have fresh tamales on Saturday and salsa on Fridays that's fantastic. Plenty of your grocery standards so check this place out, you won't be disappointed.
