Slow down and enjoy the beauty.
Plan to spend at least half a day hiking the "steam vent trail" through the rainforest to see the many wild orchids (3 types) and fascinating trees; hike the property to see the lava tube, fruit orchard, plunge pool, and of course the two steam-heated soaking tubs (rainwater cleaned by solar powered spa filters). The steam is wonderful'.
Of course the reason it's at rainforest is because it rains almost every day, but not usually for very long. Then you can drive to see the area just miles away where 750 homes where destroyed by lava in 2018 (the roads just end!), the pounding surf on the black lava coastline, the black-sand nude beach (if you want!), the 100 year old Painted Church, the Lava Trees State Park... and that's all to the southeast!
Just 5 miles north is the crazy-funky town of Pahoa with funny little shops and restaurants, along with a good grocery store so you can make breakfast and lunch for yourselves every day.
Each "cottage" has a small kitchen with a real gas stove for those who like to cook, a porch with patio furniture with a stunning view. They are really well maintained, as are the grounds.
It's a good basecamp to see the rest of the windward side of the Big Island. Great beaches in Hilo (30 minutes away), beautiful public gardens, famous waterfalls including 440 ft Akaka, and a chocolate plantation tour. For another day, it's just 25 miles west to Volcano National Park! Beyond that, the black sand beach where you can swim and watch the sea turtles sunbath. What a state!
We spent a week and wanted more time to just stay slowed down. And that's even with spotty WiFi. Or maybe because of it!
