13 Spectacular Bridges That May Make You Lose Your Lunch

"The high mountains and deep gorges of Bhutan lend themselves to suspension bridges. Punakha Suspension Bridge, which is always adorned with colorful prayer flags, is the perfect example of this. Linking Punakha Dzong to Shengana, Samdingkha, and Wangkha villages across the Tsang Chu River (aka Po Chu), this is one of the longest suspension bridges in Bhutan. Yet, for a roughly 520-foot-long suspension bridge, it’s surprisingly stable. The bridge offers a spectacular view of the river and valley, and the east bank is a good starting point for multi-day treks in the nearby mountains. Traditional Bhutanese bridges make use of cantilevers, beams anchored to one bank and projecting horizontally to reach the other bank. This simple but effective structure can be upgraded by using interlocking beams. A prime example of this is the bridge in front of Punakha Dzong. Unlike these bridges, the one in Punakha relies on cables anchored to massive cement blocks on the banks. Being suspended, the bridge does have some inbuilt flexibility that makes it swing in strong winds, but not as much as you may expect. This is due to the stabilizing cables that taper off on both ends of the bridge. The deck is made of solid planks of wood nested in the deck truss." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

The bridge is a pedestrian bridge that crosses over the Po Chhu River in Punakha, is made of steel cables and wooden planks and is suspended high above the river below, is approximately 160m long and 1.2 m wide. It is an exhilarating experience to walk across the bridge, as you feel the bridge sway slightly under your feet with each step you take. As you walk across the bridge, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. It is located just a short walk from Punakha Dzong

This is the longest suspension bridge in Bhutan and definitely worth walking across. It gently sways over the river, lined with colorful prayer flags and great views on both sides. It’s usually quite busy with both locals and tourists, but the flow moves quickly, so you don’t really have to wait in line. After crossing from the dzong side, there are a few small cafés where you can grab a cold drink or coffee — a nice break before heading back.

The suspension bridge is located in Punakha, and is a pedestrian bridge across the Po Chhu river. Made of steel cables and wooden planks, the bridge as the name suggests suspends along the river and to cross this bridge takes about 5 minutes depending on your speed. Though not for the faint hearted, crossing this bridge is definitely a challenge one need to undertake when visiting Bhutan

Thrilling Experience with Stunning Views 🌉🌿 Visited the Punakha Suspension Bridge on March 24 as part of our Bhutan itinerary, and it was truly a highlight of the trip. The bridge, stretching at least 200 meters over the Pochu River, offers breathtaking views of both the Mochu and Pochu rivers 🌊 along with the surrounding mountain range ⛰️. The entire span is adorned with colorful prayer flags 🏳️, adding a vibrant charm to the experience. It was super windy 🌬️ during our visit, making the bridge sway slightly, which added to the thrill 😄. Despite the shaking, the crossing felt safe and was absolutely exhilarating. The panoramic view from the bridge is simply spectacular—definitely a must-visit spot in Punakha! 🌟 Best of all, there is no entry fee to visit the bridge, making it an accessible and worthwhile experience for everyone!

This long suspension bridge crosses a river and leads to Mendegang Village (which itself is a really beautiful village with great natural scenery). The bridge sits pretty high above the river below, so people who are deathly afraid of heights might have a little bit of difficulty. But the bridge is very sturdy so there is nothing to worry about. The views from the bridge are okay, but the views on the other side are absolutely worth the walk. Would recommend

The iconic Punakha Suspension Bridge offers breathtaking views over the Pho Chhu river. With colorful prayer flags and a gentle sway, it’s a peaceful yet thrilling spot—perfect for photos and soaking in Bhutan’s natural beauty. It's best visited in the morning for a quieter experience, as drivers often try to cover it in the evening after Punakha Dzong, when it tends to get overly crowded.

I was very excited to visit this suspension bridge at Punakha which is the longest suspension bridge in Bhutan. The bridge was initially constructed to connect the two villages and now this place has become one of the major tourist attractions in Bhutan. The entire span of the bridge is covered with colourful prayer flags which makes the bridge look vibrant, you can get to see the panorama view of the river along with the mountain range. It was super windy and the bridge was shaking but believe me it was one of the thrilling experiences. We walk around the other side where you can have tea or coffee at the small cafes. The suspension bridge is near the Punakha Dzong and you have to walk a little before reaching the start point of the bridge. There is no entry fee to enter the bridge and experience the thrill.
