The Best Things to Do in Bali, the Island of the Gods | Condé Nast Traveler

"An important sacred water temple for more than 1,000 years, Tirta Empul (“Holy Spring”) contains a warren of shrines, gates, courtyards, and purification pools where Balinese Hindus “baptize” themselves underneath a succession of waterspouts. Equally popular with travelers, the temple commands a 90,000 IDR (around $5.50) entry fee and the wearing of a sarong. Yes, there are crowds, but the ornate temples, exquisite stone statues of the divine, and sacred bathing pools are inspiring nonetheless. Want to immerse yourself (literally) in the holy Tirta Empul experience? Bring an additional change of clothes and swimwear to partake in the water ritual; helpful temple staff are on-hand to explain the protocol if you came without a guide. Despite its popularity, Tirta Empul contains a rare spiritual heft not seen in other Balinese temples. Come to feel moved." - Julia Eskins

7 temples to visit for a different side of Bali - SilverKris

"Centered on a sacred spring discovered in the 10th century, this temple is renowned for its bathing pools and is popular with both locals and visitors who come to bathe, splash or simply dangle their feet in water believed to have curative properties; the spring is traditionally said to have been created by the god Indra. The pools also contain fish, and the site has a lively, family-friendly atmosphere with children often enjoying the water." - SilverKris

I had the most amazing experience at this place. Taking part in the Melukat holy water purification ritual was truly special and spiritually cleansing. I felt incredibly refreshed and renewed afterward. The ritual itself can be a bit complicated to follow properly, so I found it much better to hire a local guide at the temple rather than booking a full tour. It’s more affordable, and the guide explains exactly what’s required for this meaningful ceremony. The local guides are also happy to take photos while you’re participating in the purification ritual. I would absolutely love to return and experience it again.

I had the opportunity to visit Pura Tirta Empul, a truly beautiful and spiritually powerful place. The atmosphere of the temple is serene and sacred, allowing visitors to genuinely feel the deep faith and life energy that surrounds it. Although I did not participate in the holy water purification ritual this time, I was incredibly fortunate to be invited by a temple assistant to join a traditional Balinese prayer ceremony. It was a rare and deeply meaningful experience that added great value to my visit. This is a remarkable temple with a strong sense of spiritual vitality and is highly recommended for anyone visiting Bali. If I have the chance to return in the future, I would certainly visit this sacred place again.

Spiritual and magical despite the crowds – worth it for the experience! 🌊🙏 We visited Pura Tirta Empul yesterday (December 28, 2025) and had a really memorable time, even though it was peak holiday season and super crowded! Upfront pricing details (very helpful for fellow tourists in late 2025): Entrance fee: 75,000 IDR per tourist (international visitors) – this matches the updated 2025 rate and goes toward temple maintenance. Locals pay 50,000 IDR. Sarongs/wraps: Free of charge at the entrance! They provide a standard sarong and sash (belt) for exploring the grounds, which is mandatory for modesty (shoulders and knees covered). For the holy spring purification (Melukat ritual): If you want to go into the sacred pools, you need to rent the special green sarongs/wraps (around 10,000 IDR extra – super cheap). Lockers are available too if needed (~15,000 IDR). The temple itself is stunning – ancient stone carvings, peaceful courtyards, and those iconic holy spring pools with water spouting from carved fountains. We didn't do the full purification ritual this time, but just walking around and watching locals and other visitors participate felt deeply spiritual and authentic. It was extremely crowded (as expected in late December – tour groups everywhere!), and it started raining which actually made it more atmospheric with the mist and reflections in the water. We still managed to get some beautiful photos despite the hustle – the rain added a dreamy vibe!

I had added this to my bucket list after playing bali monopoly lol. Seriously such a beautiful temple and beautiful environment!! Unfortunately we didn't get to pray and do the blessings, however we had so much fun feeding the koi fish (my personal fav🤭) and looking around. The sarongs were also a fun experience to wear. 1000000% recommended!

Pura Tirta Empul (translated as “Holy Spring Temple”) is a Hindu Temple famous for its “Pertitaan”, the pool with the holy spring water where Balinese people perform the “Melukat”, a purification ritual, but also tourists can do it after receiving permission. In the inner courtyard there’s another pool where the water has a beautiful colour and you can see it gushing from the underground. Overall this is one the finest temples in Bali, although very crowded.

A beautiful and culturally rich place to visit. The temple is peaceful, with sacred water pools and colorful koi fish everywhere, which makes the atmosphere very unique. It’s a great opportunity to discover Balinese traditions and spiritual rituals. It can be a bit crowded, but it’s definitely worth experiencing another culture. الحمد لله على نعمة الإسلام ☪️

The Tirta empul temple is really a mistary. We actually didn't know about the temple. After we notice something new in the temple, then I browse the information about the temple and I was very happy to visit this place. There is a mistarious secret behind the water generating 365 days and 24 hrs all the time from the temple primises. They don't allow to drop the coins and stars a notice that dropping is a dangerous. Many people are taking holy bath and doing Pooja. I surprised that there is no entry ticket for this place. A traditional cloth has to wear everyone who wants to enter in to temple. I loved this place and wanted to visit again. After coming out of this temple, there is a big shopping area where some how cheaper than Ubud main center. I strongly recommend to visit this place in Bali.

Pura Tirta Empul is one of the most spiritual and culturally rich places to visit in Bali. Located near Tampaksiring, this beautiful water temple is famous for its holy spring water, where locals and visitors come to perform purification rituals. The moment you enter, you can feel a calm and sacred atmosphere that immediately connects you to Balinese spirituality and tradition. The temple complex is stunning — surrounded by lush greenery and traditional architecture that reflects Bali’s deep cultural roots. The highlight, of course, is the purification pool with its clear running water sourced from the sacred spring. Visitors can join the locals in the ritual, washing away negative energy and seeking blessings. The experience feels truly special and peaceful, especially when you follow the proper ritual steps with the help of local guides. The staff and guides are friendly and respectful, explaining the meaning behind each step, so you understand the spiritual significance of what you’re doing. You can rent sarongs at the entrance, which are required to enter the temple grounds. Overall, visiting Pura Tirta Empul is not just about sightseeing — it’s about connecting with the Balinese way of life and spirituality. A must-visit for anyone looking to experience the authentic heart of Bali.
