Visiting Purnululu National Park, and in particular the Bungle Bungles is probably the reason a lot of people travel to The Kimberley. Arriving early at Piccaninny has the advantage of the early morning light on the beehive/ doomed rocks, cooler conditions and less crowds. Vehicle parking areas have toilets and shade shelters. The trail heads have maps and are well marked. Walking conditions are generally moderate, some rocks and soft sand, but I found it reasonably straightforward. All the short hikes, gorges and chasms get busy here as the day progresses. The trails are open and exposed so sun exposure is an issue, along with needing to bring water.

if Uluru (Ayers rock) is about one rock - a very big rock, then Purnululu (The bungle bungles) is about many rocks - many unique rocks. we were here in last September, drove almost 3 hours from Kununurra via Victoria Hwy and Great Northern Hwy to the park access turn off - Spring Creek Track. The 53 km access track is rocky, Sandy and corrugated with some creek crossing, you need 4WD and 1.5~2.5 hours for this section, our Toyota Prado worked well and I felt easyer than driving around Fraser Island in QLD. we've stayed three nights in APT Wilderness lodge - Google marks two locations here on the map but one of them is wrong(on purpose?), just fowllow the sign to "Accommodation lodge" until you see the first car park on the left. we spent one+ day in Southern section of range - The Dome, Cathedral Gorge, Piccaninny Creek lookout, The Window and the Heli tour in afternoon; and one day on Northern section - Mini Palms Gorge, Echidna Chasm, Osmand Lookout and finally Kungkalanayi Lookout for sunset. all walking trails are well signage and easy for most poeple - except Piccaninny Creek Trek to The Fingers. weather is hot in high 30's, not everyone like walking in this heat especially kids. only walk in early morning or late afternoon with plenty water + sunscreen + a hat and... for most of self-drive, two night stay are good for the trip, but it can be done by one night stay even just a day trip. Chinese used to describe the beauty of Mount Huang (黄山) with phrase: 五岳归来不看山 黄山归来不看岳 here in Kimberley we can say: Argyle 归来不看shui (水/lake) Bungle 归来不看shi (石/rock)

We did it in a 4WD van. There’s one big river crossing that you have to be extra careful when you drive through, the rest of the road is ok but still 4WD. We took it easy and it was about 2 hrs, it’s really worth it.

Long dusty drive in, but well worth it.

This area is just so amazing and so much more than I ever imagined. Echidna Gorge, mini Palms, Cathedral Gorge will remain in my memory for ever. Also did the helicopter flight and highly recommend it. Thank you to the Gidga people.

This place is amazing!!. It is a wee bit challenging getting in. The 53kms will take you up to 2hours to get through but we'll worth it. Definitely must have a 4wd. Small water crossings. The visitors centre has free WiFi, if you must, but that is the only place. The visitor centre people are so helpful. Remember to book in when you arrive. They close between 12-1pm for lunch. If you do arrive when they are closed come back later or the next day. I stayed at the Southern end, Wilardi, as it was closer to the heli flights. I would recommend the heli flight as the Bungle Bungles look amazing from above. National Park so no dogs

We did Cathedral and Piccaninny walk and also the Echidna Gorge walk. Definitely go on a guides tour you learning and see so much more. We stayed a night at Savannah Lodge which was wonderful. We did the helicopter ride over the Bungle Bungles which was breathtaking. I would thoroughly recommend this.
