The World's Top 100 Wonders in 2018

"Located inside the Forest of Dean near Coleford, Puzzlewood is a popular outdoor tourist destination in Gloucestershire, England. It’s filled with beautiful moss-covered rocks, bridges, and fantastic rock and tree formations that can be accessed by miles of winding pathways. Puzzlewood, used as a filming location for Merlin and Dr. Who, covers more than 14 acres and is considered one of the best examples of pre-Roman Celtic open cast iron mines. The paths were laid in the early 19th century by the owner at the time. It didn’t open to the public until 100 years later. An enchanting place, Puzzlewood is said to have served as the inspiration for J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. A frequent visitor to the area, Tolkien may have considered Puzzlewood and the Forest of Dean when he created the Old Forest, Mirkwood, Lothlorien, and other places in his Middle Earth. In addition to the forest, there are farm animals, outdoor picnic tables, a cafe, a gift shop, and a children’s playground in the area. Some of the animals kept in Puzzlewood include cattle, wild fowl, rabbits, donkeys, Soay sheep, goats, and Shetland ponies. The area around Puzzlewood is a working farm. Over the years, evidence of Roman occupation of the area has been found in the form of over 3,000 coins from the third century. Over the hundreds of years since the Romans left the site, the trees and moss have grown unchecked to cover any man-made structures that may have been left behind for mining." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

This is a must visit in the UK. So peaceful and calm. There is ample space to park your car. You will have to have a look at the photos for you to get a glimpse of what you will experience, if you happen to plan a trip. A small play area designed for toddlers and also a range of farm animals, your toddler will be excited to see these. Some outdoor play facilities have been arranged as well.

What a beautiful forest walk! This place is a gem. The paths are easy to navigate, and the scenery is just stunning. Perfect for a peaceful escape and some fresh air. You won't be disappointed!. If you're looking to disconnect and immerse yourself in nature, this forest walk is perfect. The tranquility here is amazing - it's so easy to just breathe deeply and enjoy the beauty all around you. The trees are magnificent, and the pathways are lovely for a leisurely stroll. I left feeling completely refreshed and revitalized.

£9.9 per adult for a ticket is way too expensive price. The forest looks nice but everything what you will see during the first 5 minutes will be probably the best part of the forest. The rest of it is just repeated scenery, without any additional activity or interesting places. When we have hit the end of the track, I was surprised how small it is. The whole walk took 50 minutes with 2 stops for sit down and chill next to the nature. You can also visit a farm which is next to it but this is not the main attraction of the Puzzlewood and it felt very much pushed to explain the reason why tickets are that expensive.

Puzzlewood is truly magical! Set in a stunning and enchanting location, it’s like stepping into a real-life fairytale. The ancient woodland, twisting paths, and moss-covered rocks create an atmosphere that’s both peaceful and mysterious. It’s easy to see why it’s inspired scenes in films and TV shows. A must-visit if you love nature, photography, or just a beautiful walk in a unique setting. Perfect for all ages!

A fun day out in this region, and we had Puzzlewood on the agenda. It is a beautiful forest where we walked for about an hour. The hiking trails were easy to walk, but some of them were slippery due to the rainfall of the day before. Furthermore, we had the feeling that we missed a part of the forest, because there is no clear route.

Really cool woods, lots of different paths to take, gorgeous scenery, lots of recognisable places from Merlin. Reasonably quiet on a weekday, and there's enough paths that you can usually avoid other people if you want to. The £10 entry fee is a bit steep for the size of the woods, but you can look at the cute animals as well. If you're not coming to see the filming locations then I would say just go up the road to the numerous forest of Dean sites which are free and allow dogs, sadly as no dogs allowed this does limit how likely I am to return.

Nice walk through woods. We felt it was scenic, beautiful & atmospheric. We really enjoyed our visit and can see why this place was chosen during the filming of scenes for lord of the rings and lots of other movies. Be aware that there are lots of uneven rocky steps which can be slippery. Definitely not suitable for anyone with reduced mobility or pushchairs. Goats, chickens, horses, cows - quite entertaining. Picnic benches so take a picnic. A few activities for children. Cafe ok- paninis £5 each and sandwiches. No children's meals which we felt a bit odd as lots of families visit. Ice creams on sale by entrance as you go in. Car parking right by entrance is free.

This was a lovely magical place took myself and my partner less than and hour to go round. Lots of photos opportunities. Lovely cafe that sells beautiful cakes fill.of flavour and not bad price. This is near clearwell caves so after could go onto there. They have a range of cure farm animals and a little indoor ara for kids to play on ride on tractors. Not easy to get lost in the woods just follow the paths.

Yelp
We came to visit Puzzelwood and really wanted this to be a magical experience. This, after all, is claimed as an inspiration for Tolkien's middle-earth! The geography and paths through the moss covered rock formations are amazing. The people managing the site also do a great job of letting the natural beauty speak for itself, but include some tasteful activities that help younger children stay interested. To be clear, we did the whole site with a three and a six year old, involving a lot of going up and down rough hewed stone stairs. There were no complaints ; a magical feat in and of itself! Beyond puzzelwood forest, the site offers pens of farm yard animals, a small play area and a nice little cafe with some very good home-made soup. Our experience was a bit marred by Puzzelwood's close proximity to a motocross course. During 90% of our stay, there was a race going. The thick smoke/odor from the two-stroke motorcycle engines and the constant noise from the bikes made the experience decidedly less magical. Also given the steep £23 entry price for the family and the crowds of other visitors, I couldn't shake the feeling that I had fallen into a bit of a tourist trap. All in all, I was glad I went, but perhaps wished I'd spent my time visiting another part of the Forest of Dean.

Yelp
What a great family, outdoorsy day trip Puzzlewood was. The forest is beautiful; staff was so friendly; farm animals were really enjoyable; so many photo ops. Between us 4 adults and 2 toddlers...we all had a great time!
