"Located inside the Forest of Dean near Coleford, Puzzlewood is a popular outdoor tourist destination in Gloucestershire, England. It’s filled with beautiful moss-covered rocks, bridges, and fantastic rock and tree formations that can be accessed by miles of winding pathways. Puzzlewood, used as a filming location for Merlin and Dr. Who, covers more than 14 acres and is considered one of the best examples of pre-Roman Celtic open cast iron mines. The paths were laid in the early 19th century by the owner at the time. It didn’t open to the public until 100 years later. An enchanting place, Puzzlewood is said to have served as the inspiration for J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. A frequent visitor to the area, Tolkien may have considered Puzzlewood and the Forest of Dean when he created the Old Forest, Mirkwood, Lothlorien, and other places in his Middle Earth. In addition to the forest, there are farm animals, outdoor picnic tables, a cafe, a gift shop, and a children’s playground in the area. Some of the animals kept in Puzzlewood include cattle, wild fowl, rabbits, donkeys, Soay sheep, goats, and Shetland ponies. The area around Puzzlewood is a working farm. Over the years, evidence of Roman occupation of the area has been found in the form of over 3,000 coins from the third century. Over the hundreds of years since the Romans left the site, the trees and moss have grown unchecked to cover any man-made structures that may have been left behind for mining." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

What a beautiful forest walk! This place is a gem. The paths are easy to navigate, and the scenery is just stunning. Perfect for a peaceful escape and some fresh air. You won't be disappointed!. If you're looking to disconnect and immerse yourself in nature, this forest walk is perfect. The tranquility here is amazing - it's so easy to just breathe deeply and enjoy the beauty all around you. The trees are magnificent, and the pathways are lovely for a leisurely stroll. I left feeling completely refreshed and revitalized.

Nice walk through woods. We felt it was scenic, beautiful & atmospheric. We really enjoyed our visit and can see why this place was chosen during the filming of scenes for lord of the rings and lots of other movies. Be aware that there are lots of uneven rocky steps which can be slippery. Definitely not suitable for anyone with reduced mobility or pushchairs. Goats, chickens, horses, cows - quite entertaining. Picnic benches so take a picnic. A few activities for children. Cafe ok- paninis £5 each and sandwiches. No children's meals which we felt a bit odd as lots of families visit. Ice creams on sale by entrance as you go in. Car parking right by entrance is free.

Stunning place for a family day out, we accidentally walked the whole thing backwards so saw it in a different way to most but would definitely visit again. There is space for picnics, toilets, a play park and a pretty good amount of parking. No wheelchairs, prams or dogs allowed so come prepared for that. Very cute animals section also, with the happiest goat iv ever seen.

An absolute 'must' if in the area. A unique landscape - its like stepping into Lord of the Rings !! Millions of years old, caves that have fallen in, to an almost rain forrest environment, covered in years old moss. Walkways are built between rocks and trees, some high up, others below ground level. We had 2 hours wandering around this beautiful Wood. Excellent value at around £10 each. There's a children's maze in a barn, animals in well organized pens, and a little play area. Benches, cafe and toilets. No height barrier on large carpark. Gift shop wasn't open. Describing this place adequately enough is difficult - you need to visit !!!

A fun day out in this region, and we had Puzzlewood on the agenda. It is a beautiful forest where we walked for about an hour. The hiking trails were easy to walk, but some of them were slippery due to the rainfall of the day before. Furthermore, we had the feeling that we missed a part of the forest, because there is no clear route.

Really cool woods, lots of different paths to take, gorgeous scenery, lots of recognisable places from Merlin. Reasonably quiet on a weekday, and there's enough paths that you can usually avoid other people if you want to. The £10 entry fee is a bit steep for the size of the woods, but you can look at the cute animals as well. If you're not coming to see the filming locations then I would say just go up the road to the numerous forest of Dean sites which are free and allow dogs, sadly as no dogs allowed this does limit how likely I am to return.

This is a great little place. For people of all ages, if you are fit enough, to walk in the woods. Sometimes steep steps, a bit muddy and slightly slippery, but after all, you are in the woods. Save enough for kids, but I would advise, smaller children, do need to be watched, in some places it has deep parts, little children could fall down. The woods ,has a charming feel to it, a bit enchanting if you have great imagination. I really liked the atmosphere in the woods. Not to big but plenty of paths. There is a little coffee/ tea room for a break, animals to look at and plenty of parking. No dogs allowed and not good for disabled people, who have problems walking, as well no prams....all in all, great for a day out, well worth a visit 😀

Beautiful woods. Crazy busy on a bank holiday and quite expensive. It’s almost £10 a person for entry which is kinda wild for nature. But it is very beautiful and the landscapes are super unique and not something I’ve ever seen before. I love the cool drop-wood banisters everywhere too
