Pylaia Hotel, Astypalaia, Dodecanese Islands, Greece - Explore & Book

"When we told an English couple who own a house on Astypalaia that we were staying at Pylaia Hotel, they sniggered: “Ooh, rich people!”. In fact, the slickest hotel on this remote, rugged outcrop is neither hugely expensive nor hugely luxurious. But anything remotely fancy is a novelty on Astypalaia, an island of wild landscapes and welcoming locals that’s still relatively undiscovered. So Pylaia - a 27-room hotel on the outskirts of Chora with a small spa, twin pools and an upscale restaurant - seems almost out of place. Owner Dimitris Petridenas clearly has ambitions to put Astypalaia on the map: he also runs Akti, the island’s poshest seafood restaurant, and the Iliana bakery, which produces (and exports) the delicious saffron and almond biscuits given to i-escape guests as a welcome gift. His wife Anna is the local music teacher. From the lifesize papier-mâché donkey in the dazzlingly white lobby to the sophisticated dishes at the in-house restaurant, Pylaia Hotel is a classy choice. Highs Smiling staff always ready to go the extra mileWonderful food (eg monkfish with lemon, fennel and lemongrass) and views in the top-floor restaurant And an excellent buffet breakfast with local specialitiesSpacious, romantic rooms with great beds by Cocomat, plus a self-catering apartment that's useful for familiesLovely beaches within walking and biking distance, including Livadi, the island's best Lows Tricky to get to (a hopper flight or 9-hour ferry from Athens), but the island's remoteness is its appealBuilt on a steep slope, the hotel's split-level layout is a little awkward - and not suitable for toddlersAlthough all rooms have outdoor space, few balconies and terraces are really private; rooms by the pools can be noisyBathrooms are not well ventilated, and some are tinyThe pools are too small for proper swimming" - Rachel Howard

A beautiful and stylish hotel set on the side of a hill with rooms and pool accessed by a series of steps, overlooking the sea and the town of Chora.|We stayed for 5 nights in a well appointed, stunning room with two bathrooms. What really made our holiday, were the hotel staff who were absolutely fantastic. They gave us their complete attention and nothing was too much trouble for them. We cannot thank Leonadis enough for his kindness to us and his attention to detail. Also Eirini who was warm, efficient and helpful and Christos who ensured that we had impeccable service and superb cocktails! |The breakfasts, served in a stylish restaurant with stunning views, were perfect for us and when the restaurant was open, the chef produced delicious and beautifully presented food, to a high standard.|The hotel was spotless and well kept with a charming pool area. |We cannot review the spa as it wasn’t open at the time we stayed.|One day we hope to return when more amenities are open on the island.

With my wife we have been a very happy guest of your hotel and your restaurants and I would like to send you some advise to really transform your beautiful hotel from “good to great”, based on our travelling experience in Greece and all over the world.||Starting from the very positive aspects, which are the majority:|- location and the incredible landscape|- the architectural design and the level of the furniture, very much appreciated by my wife architect|- silence and tranquillity|- staff always very kind and responsive|- excellent restaurants (both Akti and Cucina)|- great opportunity to have the cruises with a wonderful captain, Dimitris, and a great crew, Eva and Vaso. We did it twice!|- perfect transfer to/from the airport|- good advise on the rent-a- car company||What could be improved, in our opinion, is:|- better management of the infrastructure: when we arrived in the room six lamps were broken or missing! And there were other small details to be fixed.|- in this level of hotel there is the need to have the bathrobes for each guest, the amenities in the bathroom and one new bottle of water every day|- the air conditioning should be updated as it was impossible to manage (it was possible only to switch on and off)|- we are both tall person and we suffered a little bit the bed smaller than usual, which is normally 160 cm, instead of 145. Maybe you should state this in the room presentation| - you my need someone at the concierge, maybe more senior and knowledgeable of the island, to suggest guests on many topics, i.e. cultural visit, restaurants, possible excursions, beaches, etc. Your staff was a little bit too young and unskilled according to this dimension.

WORST hotel staff of any hotel I've ever stayed in. The manager (I think she was the manager at least - the one with the blond hair) was so unfriendly and so unhelpful. Never even smiled at us and just went through the motions. The lady behind the front desk was equally unhelpful and unfriendly. It was like they didn't want to work at the hotel, and were bored even though they had stuff to do and could have been doing it. It gave the entire hotel a really bad vibe and made us not want to hang out there. Whenever we had an issue (like the wifi and the AC not working; see below) it was like they couldn't be bothered to deal with it and it was beneath them. To be fair I should mention that the people who worked in the restaurant for breakfast were lovely. But the rest of the hotel staff were truly awful. While the staff were the worst thing about the hotel, they were by no means the only thing.||The wifi either didn't work at all, or worked very slowly to the point that it wasn't even worth having. I told the hotel staff (lady who I thought was the manager with the blond hair) immediately and she put me on another network that worked temporarily but then didn't work later on. When I told her at the end of my stay she started questioning the validity of my story which really upset me. Started telling me it was my fault as I was on the wrong network, which isn't accurate at all. She put all the blame on me rather than accepting responsibility for the hotel and their terrible wifi.||Our AC didn't work very well and didn't get the room particularly cold. We mentioned it to the hotel staff and they didn't do anything about it.||The "spa" looks incredibly tired and depressing. I checked it out but I would never use it.||Overall the worst experience with hotel staff I've ever had in my life. They shouldn't work in the hotel industry with such bad attitudes.

The Pylaia hotel was a pleasant experience from the start till the end. The hotel staff was extremely polite and helpful. We impressed also by the extraordinary finesse that Pylaia’s people expressed along with politeness. Location of the hotel is also very convenient, very close to the village (6mins walking). There is plenty of parking space that will accommodate all customers cars.|Breakfast is another great pleasure. Variety and quality of the food is excellent. In the same area the hotel’s restaurant, Cucina, is also very good in pasta and pizza. We also tried the massage & spa facilities, which were awesome. Highly recommended.

Gorgeous views and the kindest hotel staff we’ve ever met. From the first greeting at the airport, Constantine, Marietta and their plentiful staff were thoughtful, attentive, and helpful for the duration of our stay. The food was delicious and the free breakfast was a full feast we could not finish. The hotel dining room is an indoor/outdoor space with the most incredible views on the island - and is designed for relaxation. Our bags were carried to our room, the pool was pristinely cleaned, and the shaded beds next to the pool were the perfect place to relax. The air conditioner in the room worked well and came on automatically when we shut the doors - such a nice touch! Room is stocked with espresso, cable TV, shampoo, and all the essentials. We would go back tomorrow!
