As Chappell Roan Comes Home, a Weekend With Queer Kansas City | Condé Nast Traveler

"Opened in February in Westport, Q Kansas City balances sparkly, queer-glitz with thoughtful design choices meant to comfort the anxious—there are no mirrors except in the bathrooms and a quiet debrief room to collect yourself—so I could see how owner Lance Pierce has intentionally created a space where people can be fabulous without feeling like they must constantly perform." - Chris Ritter

I’ve been a regular here since it opened on Valentines. Loved this club and hand many good times there. Tonight I saw a guy taking stealth photos of a young woman. I alerted the woman of it while my spouse got security to help. He didn’t deny it at first just said “wow really?” As if surprised I ratted him out, his husband jumped to his defense so I said “hey if I’m wrong just pull up the last photo in your camera roll and prove it. There’s no harm if you weren’t taking her photo. But I definitely saw you taking MULTIPLE photos of her”. Security got there started talking to the man’s husband, who basically said “my husband is gay he wouldn’t take upskirt photos”- during which they left the guy who was accused of taking the photo go back inside??? Like they didn’t talk to the guy who was accused until AFTER he came back outside. I informed owner, Lance, of the situation and he said to let his manager handle it then, “oh why would X take an upshot photo of a woman?” Manager bought him and his friends a round of beers for the trouble and the girl and her friends left. It’s sercurity job to De-escalate are WITHOUT letting the accused go back into the bar and delete evidence. I don’t think I will be going back soon if being friends with Lance is a free pass to take photos of strangers. I did not know the girls involved and I hope their night got better. It just really seems like Q’s loyalty is always going to be cis white gays, and the rest of the community is taking a back seat.

This place has so much potential! It’s picturesque, good layout/dancefloor and lighting. However, it’s a bit white washed, I don’t know if it’s because I’m from New York but it could definitely use some more Hip Hop, Rap, Soca, Reggaeton, Afrobeats, Amapiano and Dancehall to help diversify the crowd a bit as it gets a bit too crowded with seemingly straight women for a gay bar.

Had a wonderful time. The space is so fun and flows nicely from one room to the next. Lots of seating areas, and cute signs for photo ops. I appreciated the coat check, which was about $3 a coat. There was plenty of staff so the bar wait time was only a few minutes. There is also a lot of security, watching over the crowd, and dancing with us at some points! ❤️ I did not feel oppressed by them, rather I felt safer having them there. All the staff I interacted with were friendly and courteous. So excited to go back!! The photos I took were at the beginning of the night, about 9pm. By 11pm it was packed, with a line out the door, so I recommend heading in sooner if you can.

So I’m very picky about aesthetics when it comes to bars, clubs, and restaurants because I value ambiance as much as the quality of the product. AND QKC DELIVERS. From the disco balls on the ceiling, to the gold sparkling DJ booth, to the absolutely gorgeous murals, to the quaint upstairs quiet speakeasy where I like to go to chill by myself or with a friend, to the absolutely massive and comfortable (and warm in the winter) back patio (with a centered platform where I can dance like a crazy person and no one cares!!), Q is literally my favorite place to go any day of the week, alone or with friends. I love it because when I go alone, I often make new friends! As a business owner myself, I know how hard it is to curate a space perfectly and also provide high quality drinks and service, and Q delivers in a way that impresses me so much!! Thankfully, it’s only a few blocks away from my office in Westport, so I often go after a long week to decompress! As a Queer woman engaged to a straight male partner and being femme presenting, my sexuality often feels invisible. Which sucks. But not when I’m at Q! I feel equally seen and equally safe. Everyone (customers and staff and owners) are kind, respectful, and just the perfect amount of fun where I can blow off steam on the dance floor or just chill upstairs or outside when I need some decompression time. As a BIPOC woman at 35 years old, I also love how (depending on what day and the time of day) I always see people of all ages and all races just sharing joy in this beautiful space. Especially in today’s political climate—having a space for Queer and minority joy is so important! I also love that allies are welcomed, because I bring my partner sometimes and he’s equally at home there and welcomed and celebrated! I could go on and on, but literally I can’t speak highly enough of Q. My business literally pays to have marketing in their online newsletter because I want more of their customers coming to my office because they’re so amazing! Thank you so much for creating this safe, fun, welcoming, Queer environment for Kansas City!!!

If you want a place that is accepting and full of fun, Q Bar in Westport, KC is the place to be. The ambience in every area is different yet uniquely elegant from the giraffe in the entrance to the lush lip couches in the lounge. This bar has something for everyone. The dance floor is a vibe, the bar area on the first floor is fast and you’re greeted with a smile. The outside patio has a huge Q perfect for pictures and lounging for drinks and chatting. Last but not least, this place has a second bar upstairs with speakeasy vibes that is perfect for a grown and sexy vibe. The staff here is amazing!

Finally a place where Queer women belong💃🌈This club is a perfect place to dance the night away without creepers trying to pull up every 10 mins. My only feedback is when it gets really packed (like pride weekend) it takes forever to get a drink or que for the bathroom. My advice : don’t crack the seal😂

My friend and I visited this place for a night out and we stayed almost the whole night. They had 1 dollar shot until a certain time. I thought the shot is going to be disgusting but it tasted surprisingly good. We had more shots before getting drinks. Drinks are not the strongest but it is reasonably priced for a gay bar. The music was great. Second floor is cute. There were drag shows too and the drag queens were amazing. Nice decoration and amazing vibe. What a great introduction to the KC gay scene. Would definitely want to visit again.

Love the layout of the place! It’s really nice to have a queer centered place in the middle of Westport. Great music, amazing drinks. The upstairs has plenty of seating if you decide to take a break and rest your legs. I can always count on having a fantastic time at Q
