A grand tomb site for the only Empress in Chinese history. Full of history around Tang Dynasty, it is a bit far from Xian but this can be combined with Famen Temple as a full day trip.

On a beautifully clear day, I embarked on an unforgettable journey to the Qianling Tomb located within the Qianling Mountain in Xi'an, China, accompanied by two friends from Yemen and a delightful Chinese family eager to delve into their rich cultural heritage. Arriving at around 11 a.m., we were welcomed by the fresh, crisp air and a sky so blue it seemed to promise a day of discovery and tranquility. Our adventure started at the foot of Qianling Mountain, where we stopped to indulge in some local cuisine at a quaint restaurant nearby. The food was delicious, a perfect fuel for the body and soul for the climb ahead. With our appetites sated, we began our ascent towards the Qianling Tomb, the final resting place of Emperor Gaozong and his empress Wu Zetian, the only reigning empress of China. The path to the tomb was as inviting as it was steep, winding through lush greenery that painted a vivid backdrop of nature’s uninterrupted beauty. The climb was leisurely yet spirited, filled with conversations that ranged from the history surrounding the Tang Dynasty to the simple joys of exploring new heights. The atmosphere was imbued with a sense of camaraderie and the kind of peaceful solitude that only mountains can offer. As we climbed, we took numerous photos, each capture a testament to Qianling's picturesque landscapes and the serene environment. The weather was our ally, providing clear skies and the perfect lighting for our photographic endeavors. Reaching the Qianling Tomb was a reverential experience. The tomb itself is an impressive structure, grand and solemn, standing as a silent homage to its imperial occupants. The site is scattered with stone sculptures and carvings that speak volumes of ancient Chinese artistry and tradition. These statues, ranging from winged horses to silent, stone guards, lined the Spirit Way, leading us into the heart of the tomb complex. It felt as if each step taken on this path through history was a step back in time, each breath a whisper of the past. The air around the tomb was notably cooler, the pine-scented breeze a gentle reminder of the mountain’s ancient watch over its sacred charges. The tranquility of the place, coupled with its historical magnitude, instilled in us a profound sense of awe and respect. We spent considerable time there, soaking in the silence and the solemn beauty of the tombs, the resting place of legends encased in stone and greenery. Descending the mountain, the setting sun cast a golden hue over the lands, as if the day itself was reluctant to end. The experience of visiting the Qianling Tomb was not just about viewing an ancient site; it was about connecting with history, understanding a piece of Chinese legacy, and sharing moments of awe with friends and family. As we left Qianling Mountain, the images of imperial statures and the echo of ancient royalty accompanied us back to the modern world, a gentle reminder of the incredible day we had experienced. The Qianling Tomb, with its majestic quiet and storied past, remains not just a site of historical importance, but a poignant journey back to a dynasty that shaped the narrative of China. It was, indeed, a day well spent among the whispers of the past, under the clear, vast skies of Xi'an.

This is the largest of emporer tombs in China. The main one is not opened yet, but there are several of the princess and prince nearby that are open.

Very cool place to walk around. The stonework is interesting, but I think the natural setting is the most impressive part. You can see a wide range of land from atop the mountain, and you can really get a feel for why ancient emperors (and one empress!) would choose it as a burial site. It is on a mountain, and you will be doing a lot of walking around, so be prepared for that.

Place of historical significance, well maintained but the tomb is buried in the mountain with a passage into and is not excavated as it might damage the tomb. Non of the tomb is visible. Tomb of 3 emperors, one of whom is the only lady Emperor of China, Empress Wu who ruled for 21 years after the death of her husband the Emperor, with an iron fist and was a more than capable ruler
