"It’s easy to assume that any castle in the Middle East was built by a Crusader, but the one at Ajloun is a notable exception. Constructed in 1184 by Izz ad-Din Usama bin Munqidh, general and nephew of the great Saladin, it commands a terrific hilltop position above the town of Ajloun, daring anyone to invade its walls. The castle itself is relatively modest but excellently preserved, which is perhaps a surprise given its turbulent history—it was sacked by the Mongols, rebuilt by the Mamelukes, garrisoned by the Ottomans, and repeatedly damaged by earthquakes. There is a small museum, but the atmospheric stonework and tremendous views from the ramparts are the real highlight of any visit here."

One of my highlights in the north of Jordan. The place is easy to reach, amazing scenery on the way. Entrance 3€ for foreigners. The place is well preserved and documented I believe it is a must-see in 🇯🇴

Ajloun Castle, also known as Qalaat ar-Rabad, is a historic fortress in northern Jordan, offering a blend of natural beauty, rich history, and panoramic views. Here’s a breakdown of the experience: 1. History and Architecture Built in the 12th century by the nephew of Saladin, Ajloun Castle was designed as a defensive stronghold against the Crusaders. Its strategic location allowed it to control traffic along the road connecting Jordan and Syria. Visitors are often impressed by the architectural design, with its thick walls, towers, and stone corridors, showcasing Islamic military ingenuity. 2. Scenic Views One of the highlights is the breathtaking views from the top. Overlooking the Jordan Valley, the castle offers sweeping views of lush green hills, olive groves, and sometimes, on a clear day, you can see as far as the Dead Sea. The serene landscape contrasts beautifully with the ancient stone structure. 3. Interior and Exhibits Inside, visitors can explore well-preserved rooms, halls, and passageways. There are several information boards and exhibits detailing the castle's history, artifacts, and the role it played in the region. While not all areas are fully restored, it still offers a sense of what life was like during its heyday. 4. Accessibility The castle is easily accessible from Amman (about 1.5 hours by car), making it a great day trip. However, the walk to the top and navigating through the castle involves some stairs and uneven ground, which might be challenging for people with mobility issues. 5. Overall Experience Most visitors find Ajloun Castle to be a peaceful, historically enriching site that offers an escape into Jordan’s medieval past. It’s less crowded than other tourist spots in the country, which adds to its appeal for those who prefer a quieter, more intimate experience. Tips: Go early to avoid the midday heat. Bring a camera to capture the stunning views. A guide can greatly enhance the experience, explaining historical context that signage might miss. Overall Rating: 4.5/5 Great for history enthusiasts, nature lovers, and photographers.

Nice place to visit for a couple of hours. Great view from the top of the castle. There is a path that you can walk around the castle and also a small interesting museum inside the castle. Not far away from the castle there is a place you can ride a cable car and enjoy the surrounding panorama!

I’ve visited many castles, but this one is exceptionally well-preserved, with thoughtful design and structure. A visit to Ajloun is a mus. you can explore the castle and then take the nearby teleferic to enjoy the surrounding nature

A very old castle, not very well preserved, not very impressive. All you can see are a few empty halls, a tiny archaeological museum, plus the panorama of the region, seen from the terrace above. It is worth a visit of a maximum of one hour.

Liked this place , especially the drive from Amman to here is good covering Jerash . Going in with guide helps to more understand about the King and the castle better. Also the rooms and their purposes inside the castle. This castle once served as the main protection to trading hubs.
