Lovely little restaurant with good food! Selection isn’t too large but enough for a small group of hungry first-time visitors to New Bedford. It’s close to all the attractions too; a bonus!

Quaint little Tavern in Downtown New Bedford. It was my first time here. The food was great, the service was pleasant, and the atmosphere was fitting for the establishment. We got Quahogs and chicken wings, and they were very tasty. It was not busy when we went only 2 other groups that were there. Service was pleasant and quick. There was available seating indoors and outdoors. Cute place overall. I would definitely recommend going if you haven't checked it out yet!

We stopped in for lunch. Service was great. We liked the outdoor seating. Food was good but needed some seasoning. A little salt, pepper, and hot sauce made it great.

I stopped here for dinner on a Saturday night. Very homey atmosphere. There is limited seating. I sat at the bar and had the half-pound lobster roll, which was $42 that day. It was clean and tasty; it came cold but not overly dressed and slathered in mayo (I'm not sure whether there was any dressing at all actually, which I was fine with). The fries on the side hit the spot too. The service was great, very friendly and attentive. I would recommend stopping in for a bite and some brews; I certainly wouldn't hesitate to do so when I am back in town.

Highly Recommend! We were visiting the Whaling Museum from out of town and stopped in. Nice cozy stop in the historic district. The food was great and service excellent. I forgot my card there and did not discover it until I was two hours away in Connecticut. Called the restaurant and they confirmed they had it and offered to mail it to me. Which they did and I am so thankful! Very happy to recommend a place like this with good people!

Had Quahog Republic the other day. A little dissapointed to hear that they were out of stuffed quahogs on the day. It's literally in the name and the one item on the menu that you can't be out of. They were also not serving pizza. To me that was 2 strikes. Had the clam chowder and it was okay. Had the fish sandwich and it was also just okay. Bun was a little overdone and the fish didnt taste that fresh. Kid had chicken ceasar salad and thought the chicken was a little undercooked. Strike three.

Super packed! We got lucky with three bar seats. This was the Moby Dick reading weekend. No reservations (as per policy), so we got lucky. Really good food! I had a delicious quahog, some fries, and a sandwich.

I brought my son here for a birthday dinner. Downright awful. Online advertised maple steak they were off the menu. My son chose salmon, they uniquely conceal its awfulness with sauce. Then serve overcooked asparagus and “roasted potatoes”, which are literally leftovers from their breakfast menu. My fish was thin, flat, and dry. I had to pay $4 extra for truffle fries, which is just shaking some cheese on regular fries. I don’t usually get mixed drinks in places like this because they’re giant glasses of juice. The beer was beyond overpriced. The server however was a lovely young lady who had just started that day, and I hope she applies somewhere else once she’s trained. It was Juneteenth, so many places were closed and Cultivator had an issue and couldn’t make hot food. I should’ve went to Fathoms, it’s always delicious and consistent. Better choices -Cultivator, Black Whale, Cork, Fathoms, Cafe Italia, Black Bass or Sail Loft.

Yelp
When I think of Massachusetts, I think of clam chowder. The clam chowder I had here was EXACTLY what I imagined. Service in this quaint tavern by a super nice and attentive bartender & server. I can't wait to come back! Oh, I would have taken a picture but I ate it too fast. SO GOOD!!

Yelp
Husband and I just visited for lunch. Drawn by convenient location and initial impression. Turned out to an absolute disaster. There was only one person serving the bar,the restaurant and takeout. As to be expected with a full crowd the wait for everything was endless. Things were made infinitely worse by a group of unruly drunks nearby . In the end the food was expensive and pathetic. My pulled pork sandwich was a tasteless soggy mess and my husband's food no better

Scott P.

Yelp
Great food and prices too. Has the stuffed quahog and the kale soup. Kitty was very friendly and helpful with the menu. Worth a repeat visit.

Yelp
We needed a place to eat and wandering around New Bedford. And we wandered into the Whaler's Tavern. Seated right away. Ordered I think it was called the Irish Nachos. Nachos with waffle fries. Really good. She ordered the lobster and grilled cheese sandwich. She loved it. I ordered the salmon BLT. Really different and delicious. Food was right on time, and was very good. Waitress was amazing and very funny. Ambiance was genuine, not a tourist trap. Good solid food for the price.

Ned L.

Yelp
Came for the stuffed quahog ('KO-hog)' clam and to try their chowder (both delicious), but I need to explain. The sign says Whaler's Tavern with Quahog Republic in small print. And that's fair. Like most restaurants in New Bedford, this place is basically a bar that serves some food. That tradition may be as old as the cobblestone streets. So the ambiance is more modern bar with TVs and less old fashioned whalers' tavern. So I had a beer. The Kölsch was the only decent non-IPA on tap. The service was very helpful, explaining lots of things including details of the Karen Read trial on TV at the time. Anywho, the chowder was tasty & traditional, but not exceptional. The quahog was better than expected, but it's still not my favorite food. And the beer was fine.

Steve L.

Yelp
The crunchy Cod was fantastic. Quaint little classic NE tavern. Good was fresh and hot, service was excellent.

Heather W.

Yelp
I loved their spicy bloody mary and cod. I also ordered kale soup, which was clearly the end of the pot, watered down and very bland. There was no liquid in this "soup", nor did it fill the cup. (I happened to be there later as well and they were"out" of the soup. They really should have nixed it earlier.) Interesting beer selection; quesadilla and stuffed scallop ok-

Robert R.

Yelp
I just loved this place. The chowder was delicious and plentiful. The Tavern salad was huge and had enough salad dressing.

Tiffany B.

Yelp
i like this place - it's a cute little spot for a lowkey drink or some good food. I really love the choriço sandwich that they have here with the roasted potatoes. their martinis are okay - would try again :)

Amanda M.

Yelp
Decided to meet up with my sister and a friend I haven't seen for a while. Ny friend had suggested we go to the Whaler's Republic as were all in the mood for seafood. Seated right away, not crowded, was great especially since we planned on talking a bit while there. A few things we wanted to order were unavailable, not surprising giving the recent demand these days, but would have been nice to be informed of the items they were out of before we had already decided on what to order and being let down as it was not available. Waitress also seemed to be confused about which items were and were not still on the menu after a recent menu update on their part, which got confusing and made ordering quite difficult. Ended up going with The Monster Lobster Roll -full to the brim with big meaty pieces, but could have used a bit more mayo. The Large Lobster Roll Which in my opinion wasn't much smaller than the monster. Slaw tasted a bit off though. Lemon Caper Salmon The salmon was cooked nicely but was about half the size most other places would give per serving. Caper sauce was creamy and delicious but unfortunately the asparagus was burnt. Both my friend and sister received their lobster rolls, and I assumed my dish was soon to follow. I waited patiently thinking to myself did they forget about me? Which was likely since the waitress was uncertain what I ordered was even still on the menu to begin with. 10 minutes passed and finally my plate came but at this point both other parties were practically done eating. Was my first experience at this establishment and had high hopes but unfortunately they fell flat in more areas than one. Won't even mention the bathroom situation.

Elizabeth L.

Yelp
First time coming here while I was visiting fam back home in NB! The spicy quahog and chowder were AMAZING. I tell people all the time on the west coast (where I live) that our seafood is *nothing* in comparison lol

Alec G.

Yelp
It's the best margarita I've ever had (it's called the Wheel House). Excellent lunch spot downtown. The food is great as well.

Amy B.

Yelp
After leaving the whaling museum and feeling a bit hungry for lunch, we happened to walk by here and decided to give it a shot. There was one server helping everyone on a Tuesday afternoon, and she did so with ease and a smile for every customer. My pulled pork sandwich was really good; I thought the bbq sauce on it was excellent. My husband's BLT was pretty standard, and tasty. Cute little place with good food and great service.

Yelp
Our experience here was neither good nor bad... We wanted to grab drinks with a friend after attending a theatre show and there were very few places open that late. After popping in at a couple of other places, we chose this one because it was a bit off the beaten path and wasn't too loud for us to enjoy conversation. There was one employee working, and the kitchen was closed, so we were a bit disappointed not to have access to the menu, but the server went above and beyond, making us an order of fries and a stuffed Quahog. I didn't eat, but enjoyed a Whiskey Flight while the rest of our party nibbled and visited. The only negative thing I could say is that a couple of our party had empty water glasses for quite a while, but as I mentioned earlier, there was only one person working, so I can offer grace for that. I would definitely visit again, and that experience would likely generate a fourth star for my review, but for now I'll give it a solid three.

Yelp
Visited New Bedford and stopped in for lunch. Food was typical bar food. I think this is a good place to stop in for drinks. Menu prices provided on the menu are not the current prices, I was not made aware of this increase in pricing until the bill was provided. The menu does include a note that prices are subject to change.

Stephen K.

Yelp
Great location in New Bedford, steps away from the Whaling Museum. Cobble stone streets, great old school look inside. Excellent Beer selection and food was perfect. Great staff and Bartenders. I've been going here for almost a year now and have never been disappointed.

Lisa R.

Yelp
Really easy place to head after the Whaling Museum with good food and nice staff. I got the Poor Man's Surf and Turf and a Bloody Mary. Both were great!

Janet P.

Yelp
Ordered a pizza 'without the mushrooms', but there they were, baked right into it. They did offer to remake it, but I just picked them off instead and then she took half off the bill (which was very nice). The pizza was good except for the crust, which tasted like basic cardboard. Cute place, but I probably wouldn't go back. I went because I wanted fish and chips. It said the batter/coating was made of corn flakes and almonds. Why I ask? Total turnoff and disappointment, so didn't even attempt ordering.

Trinity S.

Yelp
Quintessential. Perfection. Easy. I visit NB once every few years and I always come here at least once. It's exactly what one wants and needs. Love the staff too.

Amanda J.

Yelp
Little pricey for the specials on St Patrick's day. Overall good meal. Colored purple drinks for the holiday

Dave L.

Yelp
Had lunch with my wife here on a perfect fall afternoon, sat outside in their lovely 'patio'. The hostess was charming, the waitress was excellent, food was delicious. We had PEI mussels, and a chourico sandwich. Both were generously sized as well as great tasting. The mussels were made in a typical Portugese style, with white wine and chourico. Had we known that here they put in large chunks of chourico, we'd have gotten something different for the sandwich. Usually mussel dishes like this have little tiny bits of the sausage. The brioche toast was a perfect vehicle to soak up all the delicious broth. The sandwich was also excellent, beautifully grilled sausage split lengthwise on a nice bun with tomato, lettuce, and a mustard sauce. They have a good selection of beer and creative cocktails too. Next time we're in New Bedford, this is a must stop.

Yelp
I went here for lunch as it was really close to where I work. When I walked in it looked like a simple pub. I sat down and the friendly lady at the bar was more than happy to help me decide what to eat. She told me they had fish and chips and a cod sandwich and many other things when I asked her if I could have a salad instead of fries for the fish and chips. She suggested that I eat one of her favorite lunches. She put the cod fillet on the tavern salad and I have to tell you it was the best lunch I've had in quite a while. The mustard vinaigrette is delicious, and the batter for the cod is amazing. The filet was crunchy, fresh and mouthwatering alongside the salad. This place was a hit! The comfortable atmosphere, friendly staff and delicious food make for a most excellent break in the middle of the day.

Yelp
I like the area & the atmosphere but they don't have oysters ? It's named after a shellfish. If you are bringing your girlfriend/wife, who likes desserts, be aware that they don't serve any. Apps & meals were very good. Our waitress was very good.

Gordon W.

Yelp
Love this place. We have been coming for years. Great taps, excellent food, amazing rum selection, and a cute interesting ambience. We love sitting at the bar, and we have always met interesting people there. Do yourself a favor and go!

JEFFREY K.

Yelp
Our server was delightful and provided decent attention. The food was mediocre and poorly seasoned. Nothing stood out. We thought about a lobster roll but a 12 oz roll was $60...OUTRAGEOUS! This is New Bedford not midtown Manhattan.

L Mark D.

Yelp
Great lunch in historic New Bedford Started with Bloody Mary's nice a spicy and who doesn't love Bacon? I had the crunchy fish and chips and it was very good, she had a $32.00 lobster roll and loved it. Their beer was cold a delicious

Rocky P.

Yelp
I called to see if they had Kale Soup at about 930 pm because whatever Daddy's Princess wants if its within my power she gets so on yelp it says $6.50 but when I get there it's double the price that's posted on the Yelp app as I'm waiting for the over priced soup I heard the waitress/ Bartender speaking with what I believe was the cook laughing because I thought the price on the app was correct kinda making fun of me which I would say is bad service and the price for a Quart of soup is $40 plus tax not reasonable at all I will not be returning to this place ever all around 0 stars

Brian W.

Yelp
Ducked in with my son Queequeg to get out of the rain. Grog was cold. Victuals hot and tasty. TBH blown away by how good the food was. Scallop bacon pizza a lot better than I even had hoped!

Maggi N.

Yelp
Such a cute Tavern. The feel of the tavern is very cozy and homey. I only went there for drinks but I had the best Bloody Mermaid I have ever had! The bloody mermaid is a twist on the Bloody Mary. It is a Bloody Mary with vodka and tequila! I love how it came with a piece of bacon. And if you want for a few extra dollars you can get shrimp! The prices for the bloody Mary's I found reasonable too. I would like to go back to this restaurant for another Bloody Mary and to try some of their food!

Lady A.

Yelp
Food was good. Fried scallops good serving. Blackened Salmon and Swordfish. Surf Turf sushi. Burrata corn salad. Clam chowder good. Staff friendly courteous. Outdoor seating you have a view of New Bedford fishing fleet. The only bad point was when my sons meal was forgotten. My guess the chefs forgot to cook‍ but wait staff immediately corrected and she gave us courtesy desserts. Good food experience

Rodney W.

Yelp
Fantastic little local spot. Server/bartender was super helpful and provided great service. The bloody mermaid and the food was fantastic.

Sadie D.

Yelp
Do you like lobster rolls? They have The Best Lobster rolls. Mayo? or Butter? They have them both! Do you like Cubano Sandwiches? they have that! craft cocktails? They have it! completely worth it.

Tuand D.

Yelp
I'm sure their drinks are good, but we stopped in for some food. We had the truffle fries, stuffed scallop with soup combo, and their weekly special flatbread. The truffle fries were probably the best - they have a nice bite, lightly salted, and topped with some Parmesan cheese. Nothing really good or bad to say about the stuffed scallop. The flatbread... it was hard to believe that this was on as a weekly special. The bread was extremely tough, as if it were overworked or baked way before the order was placed. On the positive note, the staff is quite friendly!

Jennie K.

Yelp
Excellent oysters!!!!! We went during happy hour where the oysters were buy one get one free~~ We had 5 oysters (which equals 10 oysters) the first round and they were sooooo good that we ordered 12 more oysters. So fresh!!! Especially with the beer we ordered, this was the best happy hour meal. The people working there were so friendly too. It wasn't too busy so we got our food right away. I would go here again if we lived near. Highly recommend!!!

Dennis K.

Yelp
Great Bloody Mary's to go and had Lobster Grilled Cheese and a massive fish and chips sandwich. We eat in the car and it was hard to eat because the portions were so big. Good south shore chain that is consistent. Sad they closed their Plymouth location........

Holly B.

Yelp
Fish and chips was awesome. Fries and coleslaw. I'm in love. Batter was funky but really yummy. The server and bartender had a pretty massive issue happening with their computers and were quite distracted - had to ask a few times for things - but as a prior server I probably would have been freaking out too so I can't say anything negative about their service - all things considered.

Tina S.

Yelp
The food was disgusting. The soda had no syrup that should of been the first sign.My flatbread was a under cooked frozen pizza which was extremely doughy and cheesy. This shouldn't be considered a flatbread. The soups were way to bland. Nothing that we ordered was good . I was extremely disappointed. The quahog was bland the bill was $60.I should have just went to Panera anything was better than what we ordered. Quality is lacking. Don't waste your money and by the way the couple in the side of us was complaining about their drinks so they can't get the drinks right.

Karl S.

Yelp
If there is a better drink-appetizer combination at Whaler's Tavern than a Rocky Don and Cod Cakes, PLEASE tell me. I got hooked on them a couple years ago and now can't order anything else there. Love the vibe!

Marsha O.

Yelp
I came here after a play on Sunday night fairly late, even though they were a tad understaffed the food and service was very good, several people in our party ordered the lobster roll which looked amazing! Nice vibe, happy staff, two thumbs up

Agus D.

Yelp
Very bad experience, food was okay, but the service was very disorganized. We were waiting for 30 min for our order, when the foods arrived 2 out of 4 orders were mistake. We have to wait for another 30 min. Since we have other activities, we have to take our home, because we don't have time to eat it. When the bill came, they charged us with several additional foods that we did not order. The waitress did not write order, she has bad attitude as well. Before we left, someone in other table told us that their orders were wrong as well and they were not happy about it.

Fabio B.

Yelp
So this was just for lunch but wow is this place good!! They have an amazing cod sandwich and their quahog is to die for! A little pricey I will say that compared to the other food in the area that is locally around. Expect to pay $15-20 per person. Honestly for the taste of the food it is well worth it highly recommend both the quahog and the fish sandwich with a nice cold beer! Short review I will review in depth when I am back for dinner soon!

Stacy M.

Yelp
We visited New Bedford for the first time today and saw the reviews for this restaurant. We went in and the menu looked delicious. After waiting for twenty minutes for service we left.

Jed R.

Yelp
Awesome server/bartender! Food was awesome too! Clam chowder was THE best that I had during my stay in the area. Should've ordered more! Had a good amount of lobster in my Smallah Lobstah Roll. More than enough for me! Can't imagine how much is in the Monstah Lobstah! Server (I didn't get her name) went through their beers on tap for me and got me a flight of IPAs. Happy they offered this as some bars don't and was very happy with their selection. Very happy with my experience here and hopefully everyone else does too!

Steven W. A.

Yelp
Good local cuisine. Stuffed quahog recommended as well as the Home Brew on tap. Ample portioned Lobster roll and Fish n chips. All with a great location overlooking Onset Harbor. Shall return !

Granola E.

Yelp
Seems that when I was looking for the menu a few years back, I was not searching correctly. I received this from them, "their website is http://quahogrepublic.com they have 3 locations- this menu is obviously under "Whaler's" .. its a small menu but they do have a veggie burger.. :)"

Rick O.

Yelp
Great little place . Good food and drinks. Love the flights . A must try in downtown New Bedford

Lina J.

Yelp
Enjoyed the monstah lobster roll With truffle fries. No mayo but didn't need it. Had great tuna nachos with avocado and corn relish. Yummy! THe Portuguese kale had lots of chorizo and potatoes and kale, but a little lacking in flavor and authentic portuguese flavor, always great mai tais and other drinks. Service was good, fast and food was all hot!

Michael D.

Yelp
This is a casual place that was filled with what seemed to be locals. We sat at the bar and had a very good lunch. I recommend there kale soup and the cod fish cakes. They were very good. The prices are very reasonable. We loved this place!

Michelle F.

Yelp
Loved this little gem! Right off a brick-paved road and directly across from the New Bedford Whaling Museum. Quaint. Adorable. Bar seating as well as dining. Clam chowder was delicious. Crispy Cod and Chips was delicious.. loved everything we tried!
