The Best Hotels in Nova Scotia and Atlantic Canada - AFAR

"Visitors to New Brunswick’s capital city of Fredericton often marvel at the beautifully restored houses along historic Waterloo Row, overlooking the wide Saint John River. But few know you can actually stay in one of them. The top-rated Quartermain House B&B, located in an 1830s Gothic revival building, offers three guest rooms decorated in period style, but with modern conveniences like Wi-Fi, Keurig coffee makers, and Turkish bath robes. Guests can also look forward to a garden terrace, a library stocked with board games, and breakfast treats like maple-peach upside-down pancakes. The city’s many attractions are a short walk away along leafy streets." - Barbara Peck

What an absolutely stunning b&b, like stepping into a Hallmark movie. The house is gorgeous and well-decorated, and the perfect distance to downtown. The room was cozy, the bathroom was spacious. Debra was such a wonderful host, very kind and attentive. She even prepared a charcuterie board for when we arrived! Breakfast was phenomenal as well, an omelette, a berry crumble, and fresh fruit. Cannot recommend this place enough - will definitely be back!

While at a conference in downtown Fredericton I stayed at this gorgeous place in easy walking distance to the convention centre/city centre and was served gorgeous homemade breakfasts, and slept incredibly well on the comfy bed with excellent cotton bedding and the soaker tub was a real treat! Every detail was well thought out and the place is meticulously cared for. It was so quiet, regal feeling and relaxing. Debra was a gracious and easygoing host. I can’t wait to go back and find more time to skate, cross country ski and explore Fredericton.

This is an amazing B&B in an amazing city. Fall in Fredericton is really a spectacular time. The Quartermain House B&B was everything we needed and more. Easily located, within walking distance of the UNB campus, the Beaverbrook Gallery, the Fredericton Playhouse, Picaroons Brewing Company, the river trail and the other city trails and restaurants in the downtown area. The house dates back to the 1840s with beautiful wide-planked pine(?) flooring. The interior is tastefully furnished with memorabilia covering the century. We stayed in two different rooms over our three night visit. The rooms were large, extra space for sitting to read, coffee, tea available in the room, small fridge in each room and huge bathrooms, with double sinks and deep tubs. The library downstairs provided another area to enjoy a book and views of the river. The breakfasts were wonderful and set us up perfectly for a day of walking and sightseeing. Debra accommodating any dietary needs, from coffee to dairy to gluten. This is a perfect place to stay if you are visiting Fredericton.

I'm not sure I've ever seen a B&B with such a high rating, and now I know why, since my week there was bsaically perfect. I needed somewhere to stay during a conference up at UNB. The B&B isn't ideally placed for UNB (but then, nowhere is!), but this didn't matter as Debra and Russ were ideal hosts, fantastic breakfasts (the tortilla-quiche being my personal favourite), great tourist info, comfy bed, lovely ensuite bathroom, and a lift to/from the airport (and to UNB for the conference dinner).

ABOVE AND BEYOND FOR AN OUTSTANDING STAY!! I miss it already!! I treated myself to a solo trip to view the total solar eclipse & found this incredible gem! Debra was prompt at all of my inquiries leading up to my stay, helpful in making all recommendations of where to eat and places to visit around town. Even with a last minute flight cancellation, they were so accommodating. Her husband Russ was the best! He picked me up after a major flight change and delay in the wee hours of the morning, and cheerfully drove me back for my return flight home. The house itself was so meticulously restored- I have been in a number of historical homes and this one definitely ranks as one of the top ones to preserve the feel and original character of the common areas of the property and even in my room. You can tell how much attention, care and passion the owners have for keeping the homes’ history of hospitality. My room (the Quartermain Quarters with the private luxurious bath- which was not in historical keeping of the house, but a welcomed retreat!). Not one thing was overlooked or missed. The location was amazing- walking distance to the heart of Fredericton’s downtown along the Saint John River- no car needed and it’s a very safe area. Coming from a bigger city, I had reservations about walking by myself as night fell and I had texted Debra- she met me halfway from the restaurant to walk back with me to the house- NEVER would find that staying at a chain hotel, and I have NEVER had any host do that for me! My favourite part were all the breakfasts! Different each morning, but each one of them absolutely delicious- some of the best I’ve had. I recently was on a river cruise which had five star food and Debra’s breakfasts and presentation could easily rival (if not beat) the dishes I had on that cruise. I can’t wait to come back and bring my family! The perfect viewing conditions for the total eclipse was the cherry on top of a most perfect stay at Quartermain House. Don’t look anywhere else- book directly with Debra on their website and she is the best at getting back to you to make your stay perfection! I’m a bit hesitant writing this review because I’m scared that they’ll be all sold out of the dates I’ll need when I come back, but Debra and Russ are the absolute best hosts and make “supporting local” a no-brainer!

We lucked out in being able to score a last minute stay at the Quartermain House on our Eastern Canada road trip. The inn was extremely charming and our room was very comfortable, it was exactly what we were hoping for. Also the location was perfect as was the hospitality shown by Debra. When we return to Fredericton we will most definitely book another stay.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Quartermain House in Fredericton, which was the last stop on our two week tour of the Canadian Maritimes. Deborah, our hostess, was so welcoming, and our room was really gorgeous. (The bathroom was twice the size of our bathroom at home, and with all new, updated fixtures.) The owners keep the place spotless, and really do their best to care for everything you need or request. The breakfasts that Deborah prepares are amazing! I'd love to know how she makes those blueberry crumble bakes, and the rest of the meal is sumptuous as well. They even keep a jar of freshly-baked chocolate chip cookies in the hallway as well, in case you get the "tummy rumbles" between meals. The price on our stay was very reasonable as well...truly an incredible value for the dollar. (Oh, and they have the most GORGEOUS car as well, although he only made appearances when he could sneak out of the back room!) I highly recommend this B&B, although make sure to get a reservation a long ways in advance, as they only use two guest rooms. Everything about it was absolutely top notch!

An absolutely gorgeous place with wonderful, attentive, kind hosts. Debra and Russ went out of their way to make us feel at home, even though we were only there a single night. The room was beautiful and spotlessly clean. Russ even drove us to the airport the following day at an unsociably early hour! Amazing. I wish all BnBs and hotels took such good care of their guests. 5 stars with no hesitation.
