Fantastic cinema, showing films other cinemas dare not to! Lovely comfy seats, great viewing angles and a lovely area outside the screens to relax and enjoy a coffee in

Favourite cinema in Belfast. Prices have gone up quite a bit and it’s a little pricey for drinks and snacks. But the films they show and service is top notch.

First time there last night to see ghost in the shell. The place was packed which was great. Everyone was really respectful and quiet. Probably the most positive movie theatre experience I've had in a decade

Google
Nondescript building and entrance. Good movie prices, good selection of movies, good salted popcorn (though pricey), good drinks menu, cup-holders at the seats and, most importantly, comfortable seats ( they look brand new). I would certainly become a member, if I lived here.

Great staff, very helpful. Great selection of films and events. Nice coffee shop and bar. Has accessible entrance and bathrooms.

So much nostalgia seeing this. Saw many amazing independent films from around the world at Queens. Good times.

Classy place. I'm not a fan of "cinema experience" (noisy people etc) but I really wanted to see Riders of Justice early as possible. Staff was very friendly and competent. Other viewers were completely silent during movie (should I connect this and movie having subtitles that eliminates some other kind of viewers?). Definitely will come back and bring friends/family with me.

Queen Film Theater has done a fantastic job to bring back the normal screenings post lockdown. Had an experience to visit the screening of David Attenborough:Life on earth. It was fantastic. The arrangements are safe and I had nice experience. QFT has a diverse range of international movies and it is no less feeling than watching movies at film festivals.

Yelp
I do love a good night out at the flicks, and if you are a fan of film this is the place to be! Belfast has plenty of options for watching the usual big budget fayre but for the more discerning viewer the QFT always has something on offer. I've cried at cartoons, laughed at documentaries and rocked out at the rockumentaries. You should also keep an eye out for their special events. Last week I saw the new Hockney documentary which included a live link up to the artist's studio in LA and was shown in tandem with 200 cinemas across the UK. It was awesome. I took my Dad who usually falls asleep within 15 mins of anything, and he was on the edge of his extremely comfortable seat! The new bar area is a lovely ,relaxed space, and it makes a nice change to smell culture rather than overpriced sickly popcorn! ;-)

Yelp
The QFT is one of the few independent cinemas left in Belfast (probably in Northern Ireland actually). It's the place to see modern, largely independent films. It's also a great place to see films like Coco Before Chanel or La Vie En Rose - pretty well known and successful films, but not mainstream enough for the chain cinemas. You'll get a mix of students, film buffs and Guardian reader types (I mean no offence, I include myself in that group!) here, all enjoying the chance to see something different, challenging, and hopefully more interesting than some of the films available in bigger screenings. The only criticism I have is of the screens themselves. There isn't a lot of leg room (not a problem for me, I'm 5ft3", but anyone over about 5ft6 would have trouble), and only some of the seats are elevated. At a screening of Coco Before Chanel, the only seat I could get was in the third row and as a result, I could see the bottom of the screen. Normally this wouldn't be a problem, but when the film is subtitled, it's a pretty fatal flaw. Thankfully, my French isn't terrible, so I was able to fill in some of the blanks, but others weren't so lucky. There are always some great films and talks on at the QFT during the Belfast Film Festival, so whether you're a casual fan or a total film buff, this place is worth checking out.

Yelp
Brilliant independent cinema which is also home to the Brian Friel Theatre. Have been to many films and a few plays in this place (most recently the brilliant play 'Those You Pass On The Street' by Kabosh Theatre). A lovely, relaxed place which hosts visual arts exhibitions and has a bar serving a full range of wines, beers, drinks and coffees. Nice for a night out and a spot that's just a bit more special and interesting than your standard cinema...

Yelp
I'm a big fan of QFT. When I lived in Dublin I was a member of the IFI- Irish Film Institute- which is pretty much the same deal as QFT, an independent cinema. So when I moved to Belfast I wanted to find it's equivalent here. QFT is slightly better in my opinion. It feels more boutiquey. I don't really dig blockbusters, they tend to go in one ear and out the other, so the films that QFT show suit me. I was here to see Gainsbourg, about the French singer recently and it was amazing. It was great to see it in QFT, where the audience are quiet and appreciate the film. They consistently show contemporary new releases and classics. There's always something going on here. I used to attend some talk at IFI and hope to check out some interesting talks at QFT soon.

Yelp
Most interesting films of all time are shown, not just the new stuff. And not just the "good" stuff. I've seen weird garbage as well as weird genius, but I like a place that takes chances. Also, the bar is a sweet touch, you can bring a drink into see the film.

Brian C.

Yelp
The QFT is the alternative cinema experience, situated in the middle of University Square where most students have classes. The films are not your massive Hollywood blockbusters but rather low budget, cooler films that most people probably haven't heard of. Occasionally you have the chance to watch classic films which appeals to me more because no matter how good a film, it always seems better in the cinema. The tickets are regular cinema price but there are membership deals for students or non-students who frequent the place more than once or twice. Complete with tea, coffee and a beer or two, you are likely to have a very entertaining night. I would definately recommend it as the QFT takes cinema seriously.

Yelp
If you want to see some really excellent movies that won't be in main stream theatres, this is the place. It's located just beside the iconic Queens university building, in a small building that actually looks like a townhouse from the front. Parking can be tricky during busy times. Inside however, the foyer and bar/cafe area is very roomy and comfortable. The bar does hit drinks, cinema snacks and a range of alcoholic drinks (though be warned, you can't bring alcohol into the actual screening). there are two cinema screens and inside the seats are comfortable and well laid out. Unfortunately, there's no huge saving compared to what you'd spend in a normal cinema, but they do offer good student discount, and a membership scheme of you intend to use it alot. The theatre produces a free monthly programme showing what's coming up. This can be found in the theatre itself or many of the surrounding businesses in the area. Or alternatively, it's on the website.

Yelp
The themed nights are fun. There is a wide range of films that you never see at a commercial cinema.

Chris O.

Yelp
It's got to be my favourite cinema. It should be noted though that this is the type of place that's maybe not for everyone. Mainly because it shows a lot of world cinema so there will be a lot of subtitles and themes off the beaten track in terms of the movies to watch. But for me that's a great part of what I like about it, so if you want something a bit different than the standard brainless summer blockbusters there is a fair chance they will have something different. Uniquely they will also from time to time have guests to do a Q&A before a movie with a director or star of one of the films. Usually this will be in connection with a film festival that they run from time to time. It's a cosy venue too with comfortable, if a little cramped seating. Finally the picture quality is noticeably better than most cinemas as it is or was Northern Irelands first digital cinema, it's like when you saw a DVD for the first time after watching VHS!

Yelp
Nice building and showcases a lot of great movies. Major downfall is no popcorn. Everyone loves a bit of cinema popcorn! Will be back for the movies but defo need to BYO snacks.

Yelp
Queen's Film Theatre is like a small cinema situated on University Square beside Queen's University. Once inside, there is a small box office beside the bar/restaurant area. Sweets and Drinks and served at the bar area. Inside the building there are four screening rooms of different sizes, the smallest hosting 88 and the largest 220. QFT also offer a membership card where you can get money off screenings and free QFT magazines delivered to your door. You also have the option of being able to ring up and pre-book tickets for your convenience. QFT is mostly used by students of Queen's as it is advertised a lot in student emails.

Yelp
My wife and I enjoy coming here. It's a traditional and intimate cinema with two screens and has really comfy seats!! Best thing is you can have a coffee or a beer or both!! I had a beer and my wife a coffee. Great alternative/international movies.

Yelp
Great new bar at QFT, so you can pop in for a drink before the film! I have seen some great special event movies here - The Exorcist for Halloween last year with free whiskey!

Yelp
On a rare Saturday afternoon where I was not playing football my lovely wife suggested we take a trip to QFT to see The Big Blue, a film that she had saw and loved nearly 20 years ago! I had been wanting to check the place out for a while as I am a big film fan and this is one of the few local places where you can check out classic, international and independent films. From the outside you would barely know this place is a cinema as it is situated in a row of houses directly beside the University. 2 tickets were £13, a little more than your standard cinema but that's to be expected. There is a bar on site called serving a good selection of beer, spirits and vino. They also sell sweets and popcorn although on the day the friendly barmaid told me they had no popcorn. Heartbreaking!! There are 2 screens and a theatre and it looked like there was plenty going on with ads for upcoming events and special showings adorning the walls. Our film was on Screen 2 which was in a nice, small theatre and the place was bunged which was nice to see. The film was basically a lot like a 2hr aftershave commercial with a ridiculously good looking French fella looking broody and splashing about with dolphins. I can see why the missus was so keen! Anyway overall I was really impressed with QFT, cool venue showing quality films although lack of popcorn means I just can't go the full 5 stars!!

Yelp
It's a bit like the entry to Narnia through that Wardrobe door! You see an unassuming front door in a restrained red brick terrace facing Queen's - you enter and the reception area and two good sized film theatres are revealed. Our precious independent cinema. I like the possibility of coffee, drinks and chat in the reception area. A proper sociable night out unlike the popcorn and monster Coke experience of the commercial pictures'

Yelp
If you need to see something that is a little off the beaten track and not part of the Hollywood machine then this is truly the best and in fact only place you can be seen. The QFT has had a facelift in recent years, improving everything from the lobby (now including a dainty well stocked little bar) to cleaning up the cinemas themselves. The last time I was here was to see American Psycho. I got two vouchers for free Jameson and coke in the lobby too which gently warmed me through for the black, satirical onslaught I was about to see (Bateman in the scene with the business cards is still an absolute classic in my opinion) There is a tight mix of art house, populist and foreign language films. I saw the recent Bill Hicks documentary here and Downfall a few years back. It's also very cheap, student or not. Worth a visit if you enjoy things outside the norm film wise.

Yelp
I started my days going here as a Queen's student when I took Film Studies as a third option in my first year at University. For a while it was sadly associated for me with snore-inducing movies that we were forced to watch and wonder why we were actually having to watch them. But now that I've thrown off the shackles of bad memories, I really like going to the QFT. It's less commercial than your bigger named cinemas in Belfast, and they show old classics sometimes, as well as more unusual movies too that you wouldn't maybe normally get to see. What I would say about it is that for me, being a leggy-type - I really would prefer more leg room, but I don't think that's going to change any time soon. But it's a good place for an alternative night out if you don't want to join the masses.

Yelp
Queen's Film Theatre is probably one of the only places in Belfast that you can see a low budget inde film anymore. It is often this cinema that picks up the Cannes or the Sundance Film Festival winners long before the bigger cinemas in the city, and for this I am a big fan of theirs. The cinema is small and so are the screens, but it is worth it for the intimate feel that this gives. Thankfully the seating is not as bad as some other small screen cinemas so the experience is that bit more enjoyable. Not only do they show modern independent cinema but are also one of the prime locations for the Belfast Film Festival which shows some classic films. If you are lucky enough to make it to one of these screenings you will see what the QFT is really all about, unique films shown in an intimate venue.

Yelp
The QFT is a fantastic place that I've only just recently discovered with my girlfriend. What sets it apart from regular cinemas is that it plays mostly independent film's, ones I otherwise wouldn't get the opportunity to see. I recently went to see an Australian movie called Samson and Delilah. We were able to sit down and enjoy a drink before the movie started. There was a funky wall where you could write your favourite movie memories on, which was unique and very interesting to read. The screens themselves are quite small but it just adds to the intimacy of the movie and you can easily get lost in what your watching. Fantastic.

Yelp
I love the QFT and quite frankly I don't get to go as often as I used to. This independent cinema is one of the only ones left in the Belfast area and therefore they play a lovely mixture of world cinema - modern and new releases as well as classics that you would normally not see in the big imposing cinemas around town. Here's the clincher for the QFT - it's licensed! You can come early and have a beer or a few glasses of wine or hang about afterwards and discuss the movie at the bar. Membership packages are available for a year with money off and they also run meal deals - you can get 10% off your bill, a free coffee or tea or even a free desert if you present your ticket at any of the three local restaurants and it also works vice versa so you can get money off your cinema ticket after your meal. From cult classics, to films with known bad reviews to seasons dedicated entirely to some rather obscure director, I think the QFT has it all. I remember going with friends one night to see a rather random 3D movie about monsters in space - we had a few jars at the bar, put on our 3D glasses and laughed like hyenas for the entire film. This was before the 3D phase in modern cinema - just shows you that the QFT is ahead of its game!

Qype User (Amande…)

Yelp
The QFT is a fab place to watch a film in Belfast. The seating area might be a little cramped if you're tall, but it's an utter pleasure to know you're avoiding the chattering hordes in the multiplexes and are guaranteed to enjoy a movie in (relative) peace and quiet. Very mixed clientele. There's always a great programme of interesting films.

Shannon O.

Yelp
I love the QFT; the special event nights, the great films you won't see anywhere else in Belfast and the chance to grab a beer before a screening. I do wish the £4 ticket deal was every night though!
