Grand Cayman Travel Guide

"A botanical garden showcasing the island's rich flora, including rare orchids such as the endemic Wild Banana Orchid, along with a conservation facility dedicated to protecting the Cayman Islands' native blue iguanas, making it both a scenic and conservation-minded destination." - Carley Rojas Avila Carley Rojas Avila Carley Rojas Avila is a bilingual travel writer, editor, and content marketer. "Rarely do the terms Queen Elizabeth and reptilian breeding ground appear in the same sentence, but at the Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park—inaugurated by Her Majesty in 1994—you'll find a notable exception. Of the countess features to recommend the place, from its riotous gardens to its serene teahouse, perhaps most fun are the residents of its blue iguana habitat—shimmering azure ambassadors who'll greet you on the paths (and occasionally, in the parking lot, where signs caution you to check for sleeping iguanas under your wheels). Other colorful characters to look out for: the emerald Grand Cayman parrots flecked with crimson (they like to frond-hop overhead) and the various aquatic birds in and around the flower-garden-adjacent lake."

Nice 1 mile loop through natural Cayman forest (get there early, it gets hot). The Blue Iguana breeding facility is part of it too and worth a look. Lastly, a highlight of the planted gardens area is the orchid boardwalk loop…many species (many not native) in bloom and easily visible in a naturalistic setting. $25 access for foreign nationals.

What a great place to see on Grand Cayman. Sprayed mosquito spray as suggested and it was a wonderful experience seeing all the flowers and iguanas. Highly recommend on your visit to the island!

BRING MOSQUITO SPRAY AND WEAR CLOSED-TOE SHOES We were greeted by a strikingly large blue iguana as we entered the park — and I don’t just mean the one on the sign! In hindsight, I should have come better prepared. The resident mosquitoes seemed to take quite an interest in us as we made our way to the Blue Iguana habitat. Long sleeves, insect repellent, and closed-toed shoes are highly recommended, as the paths around the gardens are gravel and the mosquitoes rather persistent. Each iguana has its own enclosed area, thoughtfully designed, and there’s also a sheltered space that appears to be used for educational programs. I would have appreciated having someone on-site to share more about the conservation efforts and the individual stories of these fascinating creatures. It’s possible we visited at a less-than-ideal time of year — October — when the orchids weren’t yet in bloom but the mosquitoes were certainly thriving. Admission was $25 USD per person. We’ll definitely return another time, perhaps in the spring, and next time we’ll be sure to come better prepared.

Smaller botanic gardens than other countries but still worth visiting if you're into plants. They have a children's area as well. We spent about 2.5 hours here. Saw lots of blue iguanas! If you're looking for specific orchids, check the blooming times as when we were there only a handful were blooming. Be sure to check out the iguana conservation area. We saw several out in the gardens too, and an agouti! Go early in the day so it's less hot.

Great place for a relaxing stroll through tropical gardens! Takes about 2hrs at an easy pace. There are a few quiet places to rest along the way. Don't forget to check out the blue iguana sanctuary!

Caveat: It's the wrong time of year for flowers to be in bloom. Enter through the giftshop. $25 US 12.50 Cayman. We started with the iguanas - and this was the best part...from caged to penned to walking on the ground wild... Grounds were green, and I found a total of four orchids in bloom. A tulip tree, and few other blooms existed. To improve: better signage to return to the clubhouse as I looped a few times.

The latest reviews are correct. BRING YOUR OWN MOSQUITO SPRAY. Only a few orchids in bloom, also, not all iguanas are blue? And I thought they were? So maybe it was my own expectations that disappointed me. It was hot, so go in the early morning. Otherwise it was very beautiful. We saw all kinds of wildlife!

This is a beautiful place. Our favorite part was the blue iguanas. Loved seeing them cross our path. They also have a iguana rehab area that is very interesting. The colorful garden was very pretty and lush and there was a splash pad for kids. We were there on a very hot day but still enjoyed it.
