Hmmm, Curtain Road is a funny place.
It seems that no matter where you decide to go, the moment that you cross the threshold of the flash bars on this Shoreditch street, things become very very very samey.
The Queen of Hoxton is no exception, and as a reincarnation of Industry - former inhabitant of 1, Curtain Road, it really has made no grand effort to buck the trend of pseudo trendy sweatboxes that litter this lynchpin street in Shoreditch.
I think there's a formula for setting up a bar in Shoreditch:
1) Pick name with trite reference to location / old-time glamour.
2) Adorn walls with 'authentic' memorabilia of this area's East End roots.
3) Have some kind of quirk in the decor - be it bespoke furniture, moody lighting or, in this case a cinema billboard above the bar (which is quite cool actually)
4) Choose aptly eclectic new wave remix / electro pop / '80s soundtrack.
5) Have cocktail/wine list scrawled on blackboard somewhere.
6) Have bar staff with hats, DVT-inducing trousers, waistcoats and rakish haircuts.
7) fill said joint with brutish leisure pirates.
The Queen of Hoxton certainly follows these gospel rules, and pulls off a nice job of it. Grainy black and white photographs of F. Cooke's eel shop on Hoxton Street, local pundits and Haggerston park adorn the walls, and street art style murals cloud the windows looking out on the street. There's also a piano that, if you were able to hear it, would make a change from Duran Duran, and the live venue (as in Industry) is pretty good.
Sadly, despite my bourbon and ginger being suitably tart, and my friend's champagne chilled and expertly poured, this Shoreditch spot hardly differentiates from any of the other similar experiences up the road. I guess one plus is that it's nearer Liverpool Street, but that can be hardly classed as a benefit.
