Taste Kigali’s Coffee Culture in Rwanda

"A highly regarded destination in Kigali’s coffee scene that was founded in 2013 with support from Bloomberg Philanthropies; the operation focuses on training and uplifting smallholder farmers and producers as part of a broader value-chain investment. Visitors can take coffee tours and visit an on-site coffee center to learn about production, taste coffees, and see the organization’s farmer-support programs in action." - Mwende Mutuli Musau

Question Coffee Gishushu

Google
Locals recommended this cafe as one of the best in Kigali, and it was indeed a great experience. Extremely beautiful place, with areas for work or a quiet coffee break. I recommend a visit; I believe there were more cafe options midweek, as on Monday there were only two. They have gift packages available.

Loved the vibes as well as their coffee. Not easy to find good pour-over in this continent, yet here it is. I saw plenty of seats and power outlets for people working on their laptops. Cards accepted.

This is the best coffee shop I have seen so far in Rwanda. The ambiance, service, and quality of coffee all meet at this place. It is one of the prides of Rwanda and a haven for coffee lovers. Highly recommended.

I visited Question Coffee in Gishushu, Kigali, and it was one of the best coffee experiences I’ve had in the city. The café is beautifully set up modern, cozy, and filled with the aroma of freshly brewed coffee. I drove there easily, it’s located near the RDB (Rwanda Development Board) offices in Gishushu, so it’s central and accessible whether you’re coming from town or from Remera/Kimihurura side. Parking is available, though a bit tight during peak hours, so going in the morning or mid-afternoon is best. The coffee itself is excellent, smooth, rich, and carefully prepared. Prices are fair for the quality you’re getting: a cappuccino or latte costs around 3,000–4,000 RWF, and you can get pour-over or specialty brews for a bit more. They also serve light snacks and pastries if you want something to pair with your drink. What really makes Question Coffee stand out is its mission. Beyond just being a café, it’s a social enterprise that works directly with women coffee farmers across Rwanda. They provide training, tools, and resources to improve the quality of the beans and ensure the women earn better incomes. Many of the staff are women who have been part of these programs, so when you’re enjoying your cup, you’re also supporting thousands of women farmers building sustainable livelihoods. I recommend it both for locals looking for a good workspace or catch-up spot and for visitors who want to experience coffee with a purpose. If you’re in Kigali, Question Coffee in Gishushu should be on your list.

We did the tasting and roasting seed to cup tour through TripAdvisor with Patti and had the most amazing time. She is warm and kind not to mention incredibly knowledgable about Rwanda, Question Coffee, and coffee in general. She is an excellent storyteller and so talented at her craft. If you’re booking, request Patti and you won’t regret it. As for the coffee itself, we ended up visiting all three of Question’s locations in Rwanda and found a balanced, delicious cup at each one. The service and welcoming attitude of all the baristas we interacted with is just one of many reasons we can’t wait to recommend Question to anyone who visits Kigali :)

Absolute must visit while in kigali! The croissants and coffee are incredible. We did the master class (not enough time for the full farm tour) and Kevine who lead the class was wonderful, truly a top notch teacher/coffee expert.

Good coffee in the heart of Kigali. The staff are friendly, with good atmosphere. The establishment is known for its support for women coffee farmers. You can buy coffee beans of different types here.

Super cozy coffee shop. And a cool garden! Nice staff, and the idea of women's cooperative for coffee is excellent. Bravo! Banana and citrus cakes were both a delight !! You can also buy coffee in beans here! Will come back next time I'm in Kigali !
