Playa Del Carmen is already a mess of tourists, but does it get more touristy than Quinta Alegría? This three story mall is located smack dab in the heart of Quinta Avenida, a street with more attractions than anywhere else in the city. The shopping is nothing more impressive than any regular mall in the US, but I imagine there are still better places to shop, even in Quintana Roo.
For anyone who has been to a few high end malls, Quinta Alegría is not all that impressive. Depending on the need, there is probably *something* for everyone like a coffee at Starbucks, shoes at Aldo, a nice top from Forever 21, or a new pair of sunglasses at Oakley. I'm probably the worst retail consumer to truly judge because I fully admit I'm never here for the shopping.
Instead, I'm here for relief. It's hot as hell outside (#1) most of the time and the air conditioner is excellent here. Come in soaking wet, exit cool and dry in a matter of minutes. If there is any reason for me to mall it up at QA, it's this alone.
An added bonus, the WiFi is blazingly fast. Sure connections are subjective (i.e. if everyone is using it, it's not going to be quick), but I've been here a handful of times to know that I could sit in a cafe with a laptop and rock ridiculous speeds or use my phone for some WiFi calling.
And finally, there is the bathroom. My rule of thumb when traveling is only using public restrooms at hotels and malls. The men's room has an attendant in there to keep things nice and clean.
I'll be back again, I'm sure. Bathroom breaks, AC indulgence, and WiFi dreams are plenty of reasons for a return.
