The Best Affordable Hotels in Europe, According to Travel Experts

"Once a family estate, this Madeira hotel is centered around an old manor house, now with five suites and a restaurant. Rooms in an adjacent complex have subtle floral themes to complement the outdoors, and staying there was like being given my own botanical garden. (There were even signs on the trees to tell me whether I was looking at a Sri Lankan true cinnamon or a karaka from New Zealand.) And every amble around the grounds was sidetracked by an encounter: with a lizard or a lawn swing or, once, a small plantation of bananas. Doubles from $276." - Travel + Leisure Editors

Quinta da Casa Branca, Funchal, Madeira - Explore & Book

"“We try to avoid ever saying ‘No’,” said the affable General Manager, as we strolled through the immaculate gardens of this tranquil, elegant hotel. Certainly a bold claim, but it proved to be an understatement by the time we left. With impeccably trained staff who remember your name and greet you with indefatigable warmth, even a short stint here left us feeling like a pampered VIP. Many other guests were on their 10th visit or more, and we quickly saw why. In a world of gimmicks and flashy tricks, Quinta da Casa Branca has managed to curate a delectable environment of casual refinement and old-world glamour. The 49 rooms and 2 restaurants are spread between the original Manor House and a modern glass-walled Quinta. Acres of surrounding botanical gardens and banana plantations mean you can always find a quiet corner. Unwind with sumptuous treatments in the spa, eat exquisite food (scabbard fish with Champagne mousse, scallops over asparagus puree), read books by the heated outdoor pool. This is the kind of elusive retreat where you can vanish entirely from the clamour of daily life - yet should you want it, the fun of Funchal is just a 15-minute walk away, beyond the high, ivy-clad walls. Highs An excellent fine-dining restaurant, plus a casual garden bistro and bar Two heated pools (one adults-only) and a lovely spa for relaxation-to-the-core The 5 Manor Suites in the original Manor House, with beautiful antique furniture, 18th-century paintings and modern luxuries The staff are polite and professional; the place runs seamlessly Close to the centre of Funchal, within walking distance of the sea and Old Town - yet it feels like a hidden retreat Lows Pricey but worth the splurge On the larger side (49 rooms), but there's masses of space Won't suit those who want a buzzy scene; it's popular with couples seeking peace" - Emily Hirschberg

Quinta da Casa Branca (Funchal, Madeira) 5 Hotel Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Madeira, among certain demographics, is something of a well-kept secret. Lush and subtropical, it’s the sort of place that’s very popular indeed with an older generation of travelers. But its pervasive calm is its greatest asset — if it were heaving discos and all-night debauches you were after, you’d be in Ibiza. If, on the other hand, it’s peace and quiet you’re after, Quinta da Casa Branca might just be the place." - Tablet Hotels

This hotel is set in beautiful surroundings- quiet, tranquil and lush pristine tended gardens. The staff are wonderful- happy , welcoming & very attentive! |The breakfast is super fresh and extensive with hot cooked to order from the kitchen and cold selections replenished regularly. |Housekeeping is discreet and thorough. |Facilities within the hotel are lovely - two small pools kept super clean and tidy with pool towels and waiter service. |The Bistro serves delicious food and is a good option if you don’t want to walk the 35-40 minute walk down into the town. |I wouldn’t hesitate to visit again! |A real personal homely feel which made for a great holiday in Madeira!

This is a superb hotel set in gorgeous botanic gardens with outstanding faultless service, food and facilities. We were on a Jet2 package holiday for a well deserved break after a busy working week in Paris. Reception services were welcoming and attentive and they personally showed us to our room. We had a Garden Room and we were so pleased we didn’t go for a Manor House room or newer section as it suited us to be able to access the garden. It was comfortable and spacious and had a lovely outdoor area with sun beds overlooking the garden. Unlike previous comments we found the room had plenty of charging units in the charging tower in the desk. The aircon worked just fine and yes, it was an over bath shower but a slip mat was provided. Maybe not the best for those with significant mobility issues as the paths are stone and a bit uneven and there is no lift downstairs to the rooms.|The breakfast buffet was delicious and extensive and the staff were very attentive and quick to take cooked orders. The restaurant was excellent - intimate and comfortable with great food and service. Better steak frites than anywhere in Paris!!!|We had one meal in the Dining Room which was very nice (suggestion - more vegetables!) but we preferred the more relaxed restaurant. Lots of local restaurants outside - we liked 3L’s. Cris’s was very touristy but good food. A beautiful relaxing hotel with great spa - best massage. Highly recommend and enjoy the joyful blackbirds singing!

We had a wonderful stay at this hotel and I would wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone visiting Madeira. The staff were exceptionally kind, professional, and always willing to help, which made us feel truly welcome and well taken care of. What impressed me the most, however, was the location – the hotel is set in a beautiful botanical garden, which creates a truly unique and peaceful atmosphere. Waking up surrounded by lush greenery and colorful flowers was an unforgettable experience. If you’re looking for a relaxing place to stay with excellent service and stunning surroundings, this hotel is a perfect choice.

Absolutely stunning gardens and plant collection, a must stay hotel for anyone that loves plants. Better selection of plants than some of the botanical gardens on the island.||Friendly staff, great breakfasts, close enough to Funchal old town but not too close, so you get to have a nice walk. Make sure you try the bananas that grow on site!

As everyone has said, immaculate, overwhelmingly beautiful gardens, great staff, excellent food, clean and very well serviced throughout. We had a garden suite, which was bigger than we expected and beautifully furnished and maintained. Booked bed and breakfast - bed huge and very comfortable, breakfast consistently great, with plenty of variety.||Would return and recommend without hesitation. Probably not one for families with teenagers or younger children, but fabulous if you like total relaxation in perfect surroundings.||I read some comments about "unsuitable for those with mobility issues". Unless you are in a chair or needing a wheeled walking aid, I think most folk will be fine. There are crazy-paved paths and some steps throughout the gardens. I walk with a stick and had no issues.||Here goes the hyperbole..., without doubt, the best couples, holiday hotel I have ever stayed in.

Had a week here in early June. The hotel is lovely in manicured gardens. We stayed in 305. The room was on the second floor. Stair access only but no issues for us. The room was lovely, comfortable beds, spotlessly clean, great shower and bath, loads of amenities and cleaned every day. The bed was comfortable. AC was efficient. The balcony was a great place to chill. Breakfast was great with good buffet and hot options available. All catering and housekeeping staff were very friendly and welcoming. Partner said the spa was amazing. Massage was the best. People with mobility issues may find some aspects difficult but many rooms are on the ground floor although there are steps in a lot of areas. The one minor gripe would be that the fridge in our room was small and inefficient - that was the only minor issue and everything else was great. When checking in we were met in reception by a lovely young lady called Jennifer who showed us to our room and explained everything abount the hotel we needed to know. We also asked Jennifer to recomend some excursions and we did a day tour of the west of the Island and a easy walking tour - both were exactly as Jennifer described, she is a credit to the Hotel. Thanks Jennifer! We used taxis into Funchal a couple of times and this is a 7 - 10 euro cost depending on times etc. Loads of taxis were available at the times we needed them. Its a pretty easy walk but the hill up to the hotel can be a bit brutal after a day out with food and beer. Loads of food/drink options within walking distance though. This hotel is not a lively party hotel but I'm not sure that Madeira is that type of holiday? Overall we had a lovely relaxing week at Cassa Branca.

An unforgettable experience! From the moment we arrived, we felt embraced by elegance, tranquility, and heartfelt hospitality. The lush gardens, the impeccable service, and the beautifully designed spaces create a perfect harmony of luxury and comfort. The breakfast was a delight – fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. Every member of the staff was attentive, making us feel genuinely welcome. The attention to detail in every aspect of our stay was truly remarkable. This hotel is not just a place to stay; it’s a place to feel, to experience, and to remember. We will cherish these moments and certainly return! Thank you for a wonderful stay! 💜🍀

Yelp
We stayed here for several days and enjoyed every moment. The hotel is situated in the centre of Funchal embedded in a beautiful manicured park. What a view from every single room: green all around you. The management and staff take care of every detail: every door of a hotel room got a Christmas decoration / and it gets changed every other day - just as an example. Breakfast is great - anything you can think of. Best of all: plenty of fruits including tropical ones. Staff is absolutely professional and friendly. The attached restaurant is one of the best in town and we enjoyed dinner there once. Truly hope that I get a chance to come back one time.
