The Best Affordable Hotels in Europe, According to Travel Experts

Quinta da Casa Branca, Funchal, Madeira - Explore & Book

"“We try to avoid ever saying ‘No’,” said the affable General Manager, as we strolled through the immaculate gardens of this tranquil, elegant hotel. Certainly a bold claim, but it proved to be an understatement by the time we left. With impeccably trained staff who remember your name and greet you with indefatigable warmth, even a short stint here left us feeling like a pampered VIP. Many other guests were on their 10th visit or more, and we quickly saw why. In a world of gimmicks and flashy tricks, Quinta da Casa Branca has managed to curate a delectable environment of casual refinement and old-world glamour. The 49 rooms and 2 restaurants are spread between the original Manor House and a modern glass-walled Quinta. Acres of surrounding botanical gardens and banana plantations mean you can always find a quiet corner. Unwind with sumptuous treatments in the spa, eat exquisite food (scabbard fish with Champagne mousse, scallops over asparagus puree), read books by the heated outdoor pool. This is the kind of elusive retreat where you can vanish entirely from the clamour of daily life - yet should you want it, the fun of Funchal is just a 15-minute walk away, beyond the high, ivy-clad walls. Highs An excellent fine-dining restaurant, plus a casual garden bistro and bar Two heated pools (one adults-only) and a lovely spa for relaxation-to-the-core The 5 Manor Suites in the original Manor House, with beautiful antique furniture, 18th-century paintings and modern luxuries The staff are polite and professional; the place runs seamlessly Close to the centre of Funchal, within walking distance of the sea and Old Town - yet it feels like a hidden retreat Lows Pricey but worth the splurge On the larger side (49 rooms), but there's masses of space Won't suit those who want a buzzy scene; it's popular with couples seeking peace" - Emily Hirschberg

Quinta da Casa Branca (Funchal, Madeira) 5 Hotel Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Madeira, among certain demographics, is something of a well-kept secret. Lush and subtropical, it’s the sort of place that’s very popular indeed with an older generation of travelers. But its pervasive calm is its greatest asset — if it were heaving discos and all-night debauches you were after, you’d be in Ibiza. If, on the other hand, it’s peace and quiet you’re after, Quinta da Casa Branca might just be the place." - Tablet Hotels

We really enjoyed the stay! Staff at reception efficient and friendly and the cleaning team were exceptional! The room was looking out onto the garden which was lovely. The decor was tired although the walls aren’t thick! We pitied the people that got rooms close to the exits!! The food at breakfast we both enjoyed the variety of the buffet then followed by your order. Tips, make sure you order off the head waiters who write it down !! And secondly 10.30 am buffet closes so make sure you are down on time because you are told when sitting there, it closes at 10.30am and it does!! These wee things you learn along the way, it didn’t ruin anything, the gardens peaceful and quiet, watched the gardeners who worked hard, and we sat by both pools which were lovely and quiet. We moved to adults only pool as did others if kids, which are allowed, appeared! The gym and all was good for a hotel although overheard at a table people rubbishing it which I think was wrong. Through reception we hired a personal driver for the day who took us around the island and showed and taught us a lot and went to places buses couldn’t get to. It was very worthwhile and enjoyable!! If we wanted to get about used uber into the old town but generally we ate local, plenty of restaurants (3l’s was superb, short walk). Walks along the seafront which was lovely but it is quite hilly so watch out for the return!!. Overall we both really enjoyed our hotel and everything else, my wife really enjoyed the downtime and we would definitely return!!

Loving it here on our 2nd stay having been here back in 2009. It was good then and they’ve improved it… Great premium room ( 302) and lovely staff. Breakfast is a cold buffet and hot food is cooked to order just as it should be. You’re a short walk from the sea but this is made up for by the beautiful gardens and exotic trees and plants. Many of which are large specimens from Asia and Africa.

We have just returned from the hotel having had a wonderful experience staying there.|The staff cannot do enough for you, ready to answer any queries or requests. The hotel itself is set in the most beautiful setting of a tropical gardens, the groundsmen keep it immaculate. It is so relaxing and did us a great deal of good spending some quality time there. There is a wide choice for breakfast and catered for me as gluten intolerant.|I had a couple of massages in the spa, some of the best I've have ever had, thanks Keila.|The one area we thought could be improved was the decor in the room, particularly the bathroom was looking a bit tired. Otherwise a fantastic hotel, to which we will hopefully be returning.

Beautiful venue with fantastic garden, but the rooms are not really up to date with comfort and luxury… Jacuzzi bathtub in the suite will never fit 2 adults to enjoy a bath together. Rather small TVs (but 2)..no extra outlets next to the bed for charging devices. No USB outlets. Fresh fruit in room not refilled daily. Just tiny things, one would ourdays expect of a hotel of this category. Sauna, steambath and jacuzzi nothing special…but one doesn’t go there for this I guess…gym well equipped. Restaurant with nice and extravagant food. But anyway beautiful, relaxing holiday with friendly staff and wonderful surroundings.

Have recently returned from this beautiful hotel which exceeded expectations. This is a haven for those seeking tranquility, located within an arboretum with labelled trees and bushes from across the world together with a curated banana plantation. The garden pavilion provides the location for a wide choice of breakfast surrounded by lush vegetation. Rooms are well appointed and service is friendly and professional. Would love to return to experience again the peacefulness which this special hotel exudes.||Graham V Cornwell

It’s our last night at Quinta da Casa Branca in Funchal, and tomorrow we will be very sorry to have to leave and go home. Our experience here has been marvellous - the service, the food, the friendliness of the staff, and the rooms & associated gardens have all been first class.|Yes, the rooms are a bit old fashioned, and the shower (which is hot and powerful) over the bath is unusual, but these all add up to the quaintness and uniqueness of QdCB. It’s not a modern, functional and soulless hotel like so many in the area, but if that’s what you’re after then there’s plenty of those to choose from. QdCB is a touch of class that offers a peaceful and restful vacation spot. |We will definitely be coming back !

We have stayed here several times and always look forward to coming back. The garden and property are simply beautiful, creating a relaxing atmosphere. The food is excellent and truly exceptional – dietary needs such as lactose or gluten intolerance are taken into account without compromising on taste. The service is outstanding: very friendly, warm, and attentive, with staff remembering all our preferences. Every stay here is a wonderful experience.

We decided on Funchal for our holiday without fully realising the geography of the island, however our choice of hotel turned out to be an absolute oasis of calm and tranquility. Arrived at the hotel after the half hour transfer from the airport via a very good road system that takes you through numerous tunnels to be met by very friendly reception staff and shown to our room overlooking extensive gardens. The room, very light and airy with welcoming fruit bowl ,chilled water bottle and all other amenities. En suite facilities with bath and separate shower. A verandah and sun beds complete the facilities with evening turndown service every night provided by happy smiling room service staff. Within the superb gardens there are two swimming pools all providing full towel and refreshment services throughout the operating hours. The breakfast provided in a separate building within the gardens is extensive and served by happy smiling staff makes for a good start to the day. The hotel offers lunch and dinner services for hotel or visiting guests although for us we felt the offerings were not what we might have expected.|Quinta da Casa Branca is located in what you might say an elevated location when considering the main area of Funchal so any walking trip out for dining or sight seeing will entail a walk back uphill at some point, good for exercise but can be exhausting if you have partaken in a heavy meal or libation.|Overall our experience was an extremely positive one for the hotel, its location, services, gardens and facilities, perhaps our return visit should just be to soak up the peace and tranquillity offered by the property having experienced the somewhat busy atmosphere of Funchal.

Yelp
We stayed here for several days and enjoyed every moment. The hotel is situated in the centre of Funchal embedded in a beautiful manicured park. What a view from every single room: green all around you. The management and staff take care of every detail: every door of a hotel room got a Christmas decoration / and it gets changed every other day - just as an example. Breakfast is great - anything you can think of. Best of all: plenty of fruits including tropical ones. Staff is absolutely professional and friendly. The attached restaurant is one of the best in town and we enjoyed dinner there once. Truly hope that I get a chance to come back one time.
