The 30 Most Underrated Cities in Europe | Condé Nast Traveler

"As a small, private Vinho Verde option outside town, Quinta de Covela is where I would go for tastings and a quieter wine experience away from the center." - Caitlin Morton

One of the most beautiful vineyards we have ever visited. Orlando was brilliant, very knowledgeable and friendly. We had the opportunity to meet some of the owners as well who were very accommodating. Wine is excellent and the view from the tasting is absolutely stunning. Would highly recommend to anyone visiting the Douro!

This was an absolutely wonderful tour of the winery. The grounds are beautiful. Orlando was the perfect host and tour guide - he was knowledgeable, engaging and gave everyone in our group of 8 a better understanding of the vineyard and grape varieties. It was also refreshing to see how organic based everything is at this winery. A highlight of our Portugal trip.

We had a wonderful time on our visit. Orlando was an excellent host, so knowledgeable about all the wines (as you would hope!) and was more than happy to chat to us about our questions and curiosities. Would recommend booking beforehand - we tried to book for the same day but they were busy (for good reason!) so they kindly offered us a slot that they happened to have free the next day. The setting of the tasting was simply stunning - so peaceful and quiet and a hugely memorable part of our trip to the Douro valley. Our favourite wines were the rosé and the Chardonnay. We bought a couple of bottles (they’re very good value given the UK prices we’re used to!). Needless to say we finished them off before we even left Portugal! Thank you for having us Orlando :)

We called the day of and were welcomed by Rui, the winemaker. To our surprise, he sat down with us for the entire wine tasting in front of the beautiful view, explained everything to us, accompanied by a beautiful charcuterie board as well as an olive oil tasting. We had an absolute blast to the extent of wanting to come back again the following day. We expected the wine bottles to cost like 50 euros because of how good the wine was, and ended up paying between 8 to 15 Euros a bottle. 10/10!!!

Beautiful farm next to the Douro river. Worth a visit for hiking, the views and wine tasting experience.

Awesome tour and tasting! Our guide was very knowledgeable about the process and took us on a nice walk of their grounds. The vineyard is absolutely beautiful and peaceful- we were the only ones there. Great wine too!

Amazing place, like an enchanted garden/ place. Orlando was great very knowledgeable, kind, and personable. If you are visiting Portugal, you have to visit because the wine is exceptional, so make sure you leave with a few bottles nothing like you ever tasted. Lisa T U.S.A

This is one of the most idyllic and special wineries I have visited. We drove a bit more than 1hr and it was totally worth it! The wineries, information, wines, and the terraces were just magnificent. Orlando welcomed us and provided a private tour of the premises and we stayed more than two hours in total enjoying the quietness and shade of the lovely terrace. If you have time just for one winery visit, I would definitely advise to go for the Quinta de Covela!

Yelp
An amazing winery in Vinho Verde with a historic and picturesque setting. We visited in late September with a private guide for lunch and a wonderful tasting of their fine selections. We sat nestled under a shady arbor enjoying 3 fabulous white wines, a luscious red and of course port with dessert. We even tasted a bit of their digestif to round out everything. While they aren't a restaurant, we enjoyed a delicious private lunch while we tasted the wines beginning with some fresh bread and house made olive oil. Next came a light and savory goat cheese puff pastry over roasted mushrooms. For our main we feasted on seared pork belly in a bed of fresh peas and for dessert a sweet orange roulade with strawberry compote. Definitely one of the tastiest meals on our two week trip in Portugal so far. After lunch we strolled a bit around the historic property with its small chapel ruin and many fruit trees. A great wAy to kick off our wine tasting journey in northern Portugal.

Yelp
This was exactly what we were looking for on our drive up the Duoro Valley. Quinta de Covela was just a few minutes off of the main road - a slightly harrowing drive down to it so do yourself a favor and stay alert (and plan for accordingly for the drive out if you are having wine). My wife and i drove in and just wondered around until someone approached us in our clearly lost/confused state. We were greeted by an incredibly friendly young gal and treated to an impromptu wine tasting on a stone table in the shade of a large tree on a patio overlooking the Duoro River. Honestly, the wine would have been swill and this would have been an incredible experience... but luckily we were treated to some very crisp and refreshing Vihno Verdes (green wines) while having some nice conversation with the Covela pourer (whose name I have forgotten). Afterwards she took us for a tour of the grounds where we saw the vineyards, orchards and the few centuries old ruins of the old manor house and chapel. To sum it up... this was the stuff of dreams. Unfortunately they do not distribute in the USA or I would most certainly buy their wine often. Instead we left with a bottle and drank it at the hotel later that evening (yes, i am a wino). If you are in the region - certainly make a stop here. Well worth it.
