Quinta Real Huatulco is a beautiful resort in a stunning natural setting. The pool is wonderful, the vegetation is lush, and the property truly feels like a small paradise. Overall, the experience does feel like staying at a five-star luxury hotel, and most of the staff is kind and welcoming. Small touches like being invited to feed the iguanas add a unique and charming element.
That said, there are several details that break the premium feeling. The hotel clearly shows its age and lacks consistent maintenance. We upgraded to a private suite with a pool, but the pool lost water every day. The air conditioning could be stronger, especially for this climate.
Some basics were surprisingly outdated: one bedside table was missing a lamp when we arrived (they later brought one), the desk had no power outlets (clearly pre-laptop era), and when we asked for a solution, we were given a very cheap extension cord, which felt out of place in a luxury hotel. Throughout the stay, it felt like we had to keep asking for things that should already be standard.
Food is delicious, but prices are extremely high for Huatulco — easily two to three times what you pay outside the hotel, which feels excessive for the destination.
Finally, the check-in staff was noticeably rigid and not very guest-oriented. We asked for a one-hour late check-out and were denied due to the room being “assigned,” despite the hotel clearly being mostly empty.
Overall, a beautiful and luxurious resort experience slightly held back by maintenance issues, outdated details, overpriced food, and inflexible service. I’d rate it around an 8/10.
