This Underrated Mexico Destination Is Set Across 9 Bays — With Laid-back Beach Towns, Bioluminescent Waters, and Charming Hotels

"Overlooking Playa Tangolunda is the beachy and elegant Quinta Real Huatulco. The intimate resort, known for its lofty dome tops and handmade palapas, has only 27 rooms and spectacular ocean views. It's not directly on the beach — a free shuttle provides service — but the rooms are simply stunning, with gorgeous marble bathrooms featuring relaxing hot tubs. Some rooms even have private pools." - Travel + Leisure Editors

Quinta Real Huatulco is a beautiful resort in a stunning natural setting. The pool is wonderful, the vegetation is lush, and the property truly feels like a small paradise. Overall, the experience does feel like staying at a five-star luxury hotel, and most of the staff is kind and welcoming. Small touches like being invited to feed the iguanas add a unique and charming element. That said, there are several details that break the premium feeling. The hotel clearly shows its age and lacks consistent maintenance. We upgraded to a private suite with a pool, but the pool lost water every day. The air conditioning could be stronger, especially for this climate. Some basics were surprisingly outdated: one bedside table was missing a lamp when we arrived (they later brought one), the desk had no power outlets (clearly pre-laptop era), and when we asked for a solution, we were given a very cheap extension cord, which felt out of place in a luxury hotel. Throughout the stay, it felt like we had to keep asking for things that should already be standard. Food is delicious, but prices are extremely high for Huatulco — easily two to three times what you pay outside the hotel, which feels excessive for the destination. Finally, the check-in staff was noticeably rigid and not very guest-oriented. We asked for a one-hour late check-out and were denied due to the room being “assigned,” despite the hotel clearly being mostly empty. Overall, a beautiful and luxurious resort experience slightly held back by maintenance issues, outdated details, overpriced food, and inflexible service. I’d rate it around an 8/10.

We stayed a week in late November and it was just amazing ! Not very crowded, very often we were the only people by the pool, and when we weren’t it did not feel crowded at all. The beach is right there and while it’s a public beach, it was not busy! Poop clean and nice to swim in, large enough for laps. Room was really nice( we had a super king suite with a marvellous ocean view). Bed was very comfortable (I think it was California king), very good pillow and bedding. Room cleaning was daily and spot on. Easy drive to the town for breakfast or dinner, spent the days by the pool or the beach. Restaurant on site served good food but was unnecessarily highly priced, we say many people eat there, especially breakfast. We went out to explore the town. Staff was very lovely and helpful. Snacks and drinks by the pool - also very nice ! It nails a feel of a boutique upscale hotel! Other comments were that the place is oldish but I did not feel that it mattered, actually added to the feel! Would stay here again!

I would not stay here again and I wouldnt recommend anyone else stay here. We visited the Quinta Real in Oaxaca de Juarez which was amazing and we thought we’d get more of that here. We were wrong. The hotel feels like it’s been forgotten about by corporate. It is in desperate need of maintenance. Paint is peeling everywhere, there’s an abandoned tennis court when you pull in the gate, and it just looks overall dilapidated. It also felt like no one but us was staying at the resort. Very weird. The food was extremely over priced (especially by Huatulco standards). A single dinner cost me almost $50 by myself. Something you would never pay in town. And quality was average - I’d rather pay 1/4 the price for better food outside the resort. Oh and the wifi didn’t work. At all. Barely in the lobby, but forget about it in your room. I will say our room was pretty nice because Booking upgraded us. It had a nice view. Highly recommend you avoid - not worth the price.

Quinta Real in Huatulco is a small hotel with 28 rooms. If you’re looking for tranquility, cleanliness and friendly service and ocean view with a breathtaking sunrise/sunset this is the place to stay. Some rooms have their personal swimming pool with ocean-view. The walk down to the beach was about 8-10min walk and if you’re tired to walk back up to your room; the employees will give you a ride back. However, I did think the hotel bar/restaurant’s food was a bit overpriced for what they served. But you can always go downtown and find more food selection at a better price. Ask for the Presidential Suite, you won’t be disappointed 👌🏼

This review deals ONLY with the restaurant. We were a party of five with dinner reservations. When we got there at the appointed time there was no one to seat us so we took a table. One waiter looked after a family and ignored us for the first twenty minutes. When he finally took out drink order it took 30 minutes for the five drinks to land on our table. I did notice another table of four came in 1/2 hour after us but were served first. There were four wait staff in attendance and when we gave our order we specified that we only wanted our appetizers first THEN our main course. Of the five of our party four were Canadians and the fifth Mexican who translated everything we said into Spanish to avoid any confusion. When our soups arrived our secretary, who did not have an appetizer had her main delivered. Then three Darado fish orders arrived……we ordered snapper! They took back the Darado after explaining they had no snapper. Why not tell us that in the first place. My wife stayed with Dorado while having her appetizer pushed out of way. All our drinks were finished and we had to leave the table to ask a waiter for more drinks. I ordered the octopus and it was served as a Quesadilla. I could not taste any octopus, just beans and cheese. When I looked in side I swear the chef must have held a photograph of an octopus over the plate because there was none inside. It was also cold so I sent it back just as another two orders showed up so there was little point in ordering anything else. We were going to order wine with our meal but due to the mismanagement of plating we cancelled the order. At the end of the meal a waiter showed up with a bowl of mashed potatoes. It was a side order for our secretary but she had finished her meal an hour before! That was great for comic relief for such a disastrous evening. We called for the manager and kindly explained our situation with most food being served all at once and the total lack of service. She stated that she would make a report. She did not charge me for the mystery octopus main but the bill was well over $5500 Peso. The wait staff looked confused through the entire evening and they never asked if we wanted water, or “how is your meal?” Nothing. When we needed something we had to track someone down and ask. I live here in Huatulco and I have never had such poor service. Quenta Real appears to be a high end resort but their restaurant failed miserably. I will never return. There are many great restaurants in the area that offer superb food and service at a fraction of the cost.

My husband and I stayed at Quinta Real for one week. It was quiet, relaxing, and had incredible views of the beach! The staff was excellent; thank you for your amazing service!||||The food was great but we found it overpriced compared to what you could find in the city. The hotel also needs updating and could do with more ventilation and painting touch-ups to revitalize it. ||

I had the most amazing stay here at the end of January. My room had a great partial view of the ocean and the mountain side. The sunsets and sunrises were magical. The staff were welcoming, kind, and attentive. The hotel feels intimate which is a perfect setting for couples and solo travelers or anyone who is looking to relax and unplug. The sliding door to the balcony was broken but I contacted the front desk and they immediately sent someone to replace the lock. The beach is also gorgeous but I would only recommend it to experienced swimmers. I cannot wait to return in the future.

Our first room had a bad view. We never used our room amenities fully because we were surrounded by strewn garbage on the walk down to our private pool. Service was lacking, we waited long to get served at the restaurant, pool area, and to get towels/ chairs on the beach. At one point we couldn’t use the jalapas reserved for guests on the beach because some non- guests installed themselves and there was no staff to resolve this issue. Insufficient parking. Restaurant food is overpriced and bad quality. The hotel entrance is beautiful, and the beach access is nice, that’s about it. ||||
