17 of the World's Most Beautifully Broken Places

"This is the kind of place that leaves you breathless, and not just because you have to trek uphill. The craggy landscape looks like something from a magical realm. Its ridges roll toward the sky like great green waves and little lakes nestled at their feet darken and seem to dance beneath the passing clouds. Though it looks like a serene scene straight from a dream, the Quiraing was formed by terrestrial turmoil. It’s one of Britain’s largest landslips, and was created due to strain within its underlying layers of rock. It’s part of the Trotternish landslip, which also created the equally beautiful Old Man of Storr. But unlike at the Storr, the earth at the Quiraing isn’t done wriggling around just yet—the road at its base has to be repaired yearly because the land still shifts a few centimeters each year. But as inconvenient (and costly) as the constant road repairs may be, there’s no denying the constant movement has created an utterly amazing landscape. Jagged cliffs, towering rock pinnacles, and various dips and valleys create a rich tapestry of textures, forming a vivid feast for the eyes. Trails wind through the geological wonder, letting you wander among its many rock formations. The views are spectacular from any angle. As such, it’s no wonder people have been drawn to the land for thousands of years. Its name comes from a Norse saying for “Round Fold;” a nod to the Isle of Skye’s Viking history. It’s been said the islanders used to hide their cattle from Viking raiders within the Quiraing’s many nooks and crannies." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

That was the far better part of the island. If you have enough luck to have sunny day in Skye, that location must be the first thing to see and walk around. Hills, rocks, waterfalls, fields, and of course muttons are great to see.

Amazing hike! Incredible scenery and dramatic cliffs. Nice views of the island below. Proper shoes/boots necessary. Can be quite muddy and portions of the trail could be treacherous when wet. Recommend hiking poles if you have them. We did the counter clockwise circuit and enjoyed our choice-legs get a chance to warm up before hitting the heavy elevation. Single track road to get there, and parking fills up quickly. Was a nightmare getting out after our hike. Fabulous views and a highlight of Skye.

Stunning views. We walked about 1/3 of the loop on the lower part. Parking was rough finding a spot and most of the drive was single track lane so it's slow to get there. Highly suggest going early in the morning to beat the crowds.

A must go place. I thought I got the best view on the way of climbing until I reached the top. It is a lifetime experience and memory for my Scotland trip. Please arrange your time. Don’t miss it. Wear waterproof hiking shoes please. Carry your walking sticks if you have one set which will help your walk much easier. Above the stone steps, you will feel much easier to walk. It took my son (12 years old) and me 50 mins up and down.

Unforgettable experience with surreal landscape. The walk (the complete Quiraing circuit) is not inherently dangerous, but be mindful when there is rain or wind or fog.

Endless rolling hills, dramatic cliffs, and soft green landscapes — plus adorable sheep roaming freely. With the sunlight spilling over the valleys

Amazing scenery. Awesome views. Magical. It has a large Pay carpark . Can be Busy and very popular. Walking routes for those that are brave enough to attempt. Very narrow and precarious, once the main wider pathway runs out. Beautiful drive down, the winding roads, through the mountains. A must see.

Yelp
Beautiful hike. There is a parking lot with plenty of spaces. There is a small out and back, and a little loop if you aren't much of a hiker but still with incredible views. Otherwise, there is a longer trail that starts from the loop and is about a 4.5 mile out and back. If it's rainy/wet, be prepared to get a little muddy. When we went, we dealt with rain and pretty strong winds when we got to the end of the hike. There are plenty of sheep grazing along the hillsides for your fluffy motivators. I will put this hike in the moderate category. Overall, the gain is pretty gradual, but there are areas that are steeper.

Yelp
Great views with a heart-beating one way drive up and down the mountain. The pictures looked great from what we saw online but little did we know it took taking a twisty one-lane road up the mountain and having to do some tricky maneuvering when people were coming the opposite way. The landscape was formed by landslides which left a lot of rock spires intact, some of the formations have foreboding names like "The Prison" and "The Needle". I'm not normally one for views with no "payoff" but I loved what we saw up here, its so spacious and grand, people look tiny and it makes you appreciate the planet more. I especially enjoyed the weather the day we went, very rare to have nice blue skies in this area. You can go for a hike on the left side and get closer to the rocks, on the left is a small hill where you can see a lot of the Horizon and catch some of the sky reflected in the bodies of water.

Yelp
Go out of your way to visit Quiraing. If you ever decide to visit Scotland for any reason, then make sure you visit the Isle of Skye, and then make sure you visit Quiraing. It is, quite possibly, the most beautiful landscape I've ever seen. It dang near brought to my knees with tears in my eyes, and I'm not joking. The funny thing is - we didn't really plan out our journey the way we should have. Our plan was to just drive around the exterior of the Isle of Skye. Mistake! Make sure you take the road that cuts right through the middle of the Northern section of the island and plan a couple/few hours so that you can see the nightmare of nature. The drive through the middle of the island isn't the friendliest. The road is narrow, there are multiple potholes, and people in RVs aren't the kindest when passing them. Still worth it. I'd go back tomorrow and spend weeks here if I could. Wear appropriate clothing, anticipating all weather.

Yelp
Majestic, out of this world landscape and scenery. Even before the hike began you can already take in panoramic views of the Quiraing and the valley. The Quiraing is the northernmost summit of the Trotternish on the Isle of Skye, Scotland. The only (not so small) problem is the lack of facilities. There's a huge car park (parking lot), but no toilet in sight! How can they not at least provide public restrooms when they charge for parking? It's the very basic expectation, at a trailhead. We arrived here after a long day visiting many different points on Skye. It was a big problem when I realized that there's no public restroom even here (I was hoping for one all the way; no restroom on the entire Isle by the way)

Yelp
So our tour was supposed to take us up this mountain, which is distinguished as being an active landslide, but the weather conditions were really bad (snowing heavily) so the tour guide only took us up 1/3 of the way, and we turned around at the second cemetery. However that brief glimpse was excellent as we were surrounded by and got to experience some amazing natural beauty. Our guide also told us this mountain is classified as a "Marilyn" and I instantly thought of Marilyn Monroe and the thought in my mind was that this might be considered the most beautiful mountain in Scotland. But no such thing! All Marilyn stands for is a classification of Mountain height measurement of above 2,000 feet, and that's what this mountain's height is above. Hope can one day return and be able to make it to the top! Yelp 81/ 2019

Yelp
Despite the fact that you can drive right up the most scenic spot of the area, this doesn't diminish its beauty, though the ease of access also means crowds during peak season. Serendipitously the day I went it was horrendously windy so there was hardly anyone. My skirt didn't think it was quite as fun being thrown about though!

Yelp
Really nice hike. We did the 4 mile loop up the valley and back down on the hillside. Lots of spots for photos and views, and of course, sheepies! The trail itself it a bit rocky, so bring your boots, and there are a few bits of steep incline. Probably the nicest hike we went on during our visit on Skye.
