Yelp
The Race Street Pier is a little gem of a spot. Somehow, the traffic of the Ben Franklin Bridge doesn't intrude too much on the peace and quiet of this modern, relaxed riverfront pier. The sleek iron and slanted wooden boards gives the Pier a distinctly contemporary feel while also serving to offer a break from the otherwise urban environment surrounding the waterfront. On a given, warm afternoon, you'll find couples both young and old, dogs playfully running around, some children balancing precariously on the edge of the higher pier, which affords to handrail unfortunately.
The only note I feel must be added: Uwishunu, paragon of Philadelphia inside scoops, recommends the Pier as a great place to watch the sunset. While it's certainly a nice place to come at sunset and catch the last of the fleeting red and orange streaks sliding in between the skyline, I wouldn't say it's the best spot to watch the sunset. The Race Street Pier faces New Jersey, hence to the East. The sun sets over Philadelphia, hence to the West. I knew the year I was a Boy Scout would come in handy. I didn't even need a compass to figure that out!
Overall, however, the Pier is unquestionably one of the more relaxing spots in Old City, which though it offers its fair share of charm, offers a little less in the way of escaping the madding crowds.
