History- Built in the early 1500s by Orchha’s first ruler, Raja Rudra Pratap Singh, this was basically the original royal residence of the kingdom.
Later kings, especially Madhukar Shah, added more rooms and murals, so the palace slowly evolved over time.
The architecture is classic Bundela style—simple on the outside but surprisingly artistic once you step in.
The wall paintings are the highlight; they show gods, daily life, and old Bundela stories, and many of them are still intact.
Before Jahangir Mahal came up, this was the centre of Orchha’s royal life, so the place carries a lot of that early historical vibe.
Observation- The Raja Mahal and Jahangir Mahal both are in the same premises. The paintings on the ceiling makes the interior of the chamber look mesmerising. It is recommended to visit the palace during the early hours to avoid crowd. The palace is also famous for being a backdrop for many Bollywood movies. When I was visiting, I saw many couples getting their pre- marriage photo shoot.
