History- Built in the early 1500s by Orchha’s first ruler, Raja Rudra Pratap Singh, this was basically the original royal residence of the kingdom. Later kings, especially Madhukar Shah, added more rooms and murals, so the palace slowly evolved over time. The architecture is classic Bundela style—simple on the outside but surprisingly artistic once you step in. The wall paintings are the highlight; they show gods, daily life, and old Bundela stories, and many of them are still intact. Before Jahangir Mahal came up, this was the centre of Orchha’s royal life, so the place carries a lot of that early historical vibe. Observation- The Raja Mahal and Jahangir Mahal both are in the same premises. The paintings on the ceiling makes the interior of the chamber look mesmerising. It is recommended to visit the palace during the early hours to avoid crowd. The palace is also famous for being a backdrop for many Bollywood movies. When I was visiting, I saw many couples getting their pre- marriage photo shoot.

The most beautiful part of Raja mahal palace are the murals on the ceiling and all along the walls of some of the chambers. Raja Mahal is the first palace inside the Orchha complex towards right and then comes the Jehangir Mahal. Both these places are unique in their architecture. Do visit the rooftop of Raha Mahal to get a beautiful view. audio guide available at the site which can be downloaded on your phone with a QR code

The Raja Mahal, the construction of which had more or less been completed in the early 16th century was the residence of the Kongs & Queens of Orchha. Opposite side of Raja Mahal is Jahangir Mahal. The interiors are decorated with paintings and murals of social and mythological themes. A part of this palace, according to historians, was converted into the Ram Raja temple. The temple, however is located at a distance from the Fort. From the Raja mahal window queen see Lord Rama from the Raja Mahal daily.
