What do you do when you have to leave the apartment, it's raining, and taking the Shinkansen sounds like a pain in the butt? Well, if you happen to be by the red light district, why not hit a bar? OK, so Raku Beer is technically not directly in the red light district (it's across the street in an alley), but when you're traveling alone and female, do you really want to go to the red light district bars? Yeah, no way.
I found Raku Beer through Yelp and it was fairly close, so while I was killing time, I decided to drop by. It was a Saturday afternoon around 4PM so it was quiet, but Raku Beer is open from noon till late on the weekends. At this time, they were having a happy hour, but I decided to try out 3 different types of beers for around 900yen (that includes tax). I have very little experience with beer so I wanted to try new ones.
So I have tried a few Japanese beers before: Asahi (HATE IT), Kirin (meh), and Sapporo (made no impression), but I went into this bar with an open mind. I asked for a recommendation, which the bar tender taught me to say in Japanese (osusume!) and he indicated to me a few beers from Hiroshima and a few sweet ones I might like. I choose Shimanowa Beer from Hiroshima, Hideji Orange Lager from Miyazai, and Apple Cinnamon Ale from Kanagawa. Each beer was surprisingly delicious! I am not a beer person. The only beer I have ever liked was Guinness, but damn, these were good drinks. Say good bye to those days when you thought Japanese beer sucks. If you're smart about what you drink, it's damn good! My favorite was the Hideji Orange Lager from Miyazai, but each beer was good in its own right.
As for staff, the female bar tender was friendly. She attempted to make conversation with me! The male bartender appeared to know English but we didn't talk. Another bar tender opened the door for me and checked to see if it was raining before I exited. My consensus? They're all pretty decent in their own way. I would have loved to engage with them more if my Japanese was better, but for now, I can only answer when someone asks me a question.
Anyway, Raku Beer is a place I highly recommend going for you beer drinkers out there. It's a cafe styled bar (unless that's how they are here?) so it's really chill. The music isn't loud. You could really enjoy this place with a group of friends!
