Japan’s Secret Region for Ancient Culinary and Craft Traditions | Vogue

"Surrounded by rice paddies in western Toyama, this three-room boutique hotel occupies a 200-year-old farmer’s house that has been thoughtfully renovated as part of a broader mission to revitalize the region, with a 2% community donation added to each stay. Interiors feel on par with top boutique hotels in Kyoto or Tokyo, where antiques from China’s Xen dynasty sit in dialogue with commissioned works by contemporary artist Rei Naito, and each guest room is themed after a natural element—paper, silk, and soil. The on-property restaurant, Il Clima, changes its menu daily and is led by chef Yuta Hamada, whose previous work has been recognized by the Michelin Guide and Gault & Millau." - Nicole Kliest

I have nothing but praise for Rakudo An. This is a renovated farmhouse with just three rooms located amongst the rice paddies of the Tonami plain. From our arrival, the staff were warm, welcoming and attentive, and our group of four felt very comfortable throughout the stay. The common areas and two of the rooms were spacious and elegantly decorated with various artworks. Our sleep was restful and the facilities in the room were of a high standard and well maintained. We stayed two nights and the attached restaurant amazed us with their cooking both evenings. The hotel is also well located, with many religious, natural and cultural sights within driving distance. These are a bit less known, but we could have filled up another few days of sightseeing. I highly recommend swinging by this part of Japan and staying at Rakudo An.

Wow, what an amazing place. Stunning location and beautiful building, with every detail of the design and artwork thoughtfully selected, you're completely surrounded by craftsmanship and beauty. Highly recommend, it's worth travelling to this area for and there's lots of interesting things to see nearby, craft, stunning temples and natural landscape.

Truly one of the best stays we had. Everything about Rakudo-an was simply spot on and incredible. The staff (Osasha, Sari, Makiko, and so many others) made our stay exceptional. We are the kind of travelers who enjoy spending time away from the hustle and bustle of the city, while also getting a flavor for the lifestyle of the local people. Rakudo-An provided us with exactly that, and it made the Toyama region one of our favorite places to visit in our 3rd time to Japan. The JR Johana line takes you close (12 min walk) to the hotel, but it’s not challenging to arrange for taxis. So getting around Toyama while staying here was not a problem. Plus there is plenty to do in the area and the staff are also very good about providing you with many different activities and experiences to try. We opted for some and they were all fantastic. Also their breakfast (typically included in the rate) and dinner at il Clima (can be purchased or included in the rate) were also spectacular. The worst part of our stay was having to leave after such a nice and peaceful stay. When we make it back to Japan we will definitely be coming back here. Sugoi!

It’s a place with a heart! We were welcomed with a such warm feeling and really felt the passion of the people working here! It’s beautifully restored , full of character and very comfortable house with just 3 rooms. We had a dinner and it was very well executed and food was delicious! Location wise it’s definitely off beaten track but was easy to reach just using the trains. Already looking forward to return here and stay a little bit longer and discover this area.

~Style. 120 years old restored countryside kominka ~Setting. Surrounded by rural landscapes of vivid green rice paddies in a peaceful neighborhood ~Explore. Tonami Sankyoson ( scattered village), little temples around the hotel, irrigation canals, extraordinary variety of wild flowers. ~Rooms. Back to nature in comfort. 3 rooms only: Soil, Silk, Paper. I was in a room cocooned by ceiling and walls covered with silk. Room came with comfortable twin beds, art by 棟方志功 shiko munakata. Therapeutic amenities & bath with view of Japanese garden, outdoor seating area with view of picturesque rice paddies from which I got to watch a dramatic summer sunset and chase a couple of adorable frogs around. Common kitchen is stocked with free sake, beer, plum whisky, local apple juice made from the cutest little green apples ~ @ the hotel. Explore the art & craft, felt like being in an intimate home of a privileged auntie. The warm and welcoming staff spoke English well and explained everything. Cute boutique with one of a kind gifts to bring home ~Food & drinks. Traditional tea ceremony when you arrive. Italian restaurant using local ingredients, dishes with lots of flavors cooked by Yudai Ito who worked in Venice for two years ~Prices. US$353 for room & breakfast, $116 for dinnner ~Rating 5/5
