This is one of the oldest and probably the best South Indian/Udupi restaurant one can visit in Mumbai. Still maintaining the old world charm with the menu on a black board inside the restaurant. The food is just awesome, no matter what you try along with fast and excellent service. The pineapple sheera, golli bhajji, mangalore buns, masala dosa, upma, rasam vada, filter coffee are a few items I would recommend. All items are easonably priced; Ambience is very basic and very inviting. It's a must visit for a south indian snacks lover. The place is quite huge but still always crowded, so be prepared to wait for a table in rush hours. Parking for 4 wheeler can be an issue but 2 wheeler can be parked just outside the restaurant.

रामाश्रय is an iconic place for south indian dishes in Matunga (E). This place is always full of foodie from all around Mumbai. It is a normal to see people queueing up for breakfast, lunch on weekdays as well as on early sunday mornings, which is nothing but a signature of its immense popularity and authenticity. One can see their daily menu written on blackboard. Anything you order has its unique flavour be it - Idli in Sambar/Rasam, Gheen podi masala dosa, Tomato Omlete, Bisi bele bath, Pineapple / Chocolate sheera or even simple tea. They have waiters assigned to particular tables, which makes the service fast. It is difficult to find parkings for 4 wheelers, but for scooters one can easily find it. It is difficult to have any conversations due to the intrinsic and extrinsic noisy ambience of the place.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (4/5) Ramashray in Matunga is one of those classic South Indian institutions that still feels properly “Bombay” – bustling, no-nonsense and absolutely focused on the food. I dropped in specifically to try their ghee podi Thatte idli and walked out very happy (and very full). The ghee podi Thatte idli is easily the hero of the menu. The idli itself is thick and soft – that perfect Thatte style – with a beautiful fermented flavour. It comes drenched in ghee, with a generous ring of podi that clings to every bite. The texture, temperature and seasoning were spot on; this is the kind of dish you could reorder without thinking twice. The pineapple sheera was another standout. Warm, fragrant and not cloyingly sweet, with enough pineapple to cut through the richness of ghee – it felt like a proper old-school dessert, the kind you’d expect from a place that’s been doing this for decades. If you have a sweet tooth, this is non-negotiable. Where the experience dipped a bit for me was the masala dosa. For a place with Ramashray’s reputation, I expected a benchmark dosa, but it was underwhelming: • The dosa was small in size compared to typical Matunga standards. • The texture lacked crispness – instead of that satisfying crunch, the dosa kept crumbling even when handled gently, which made it messy and not very enjoyable. • The masala itself was decent, but the base failed to carry it. Service is fast, efficient and very typical of old-school South Indian joints in Mumbai – you’re seated, served and cleared quickly, which works well given the constant rush. Prices are reasonable for the quality, and the overall vibe is nostalgic: crowded, lively, with conversations, steel plates and filter coffee aromas all blending into one. Overall, Ramashray still deserves its cult status for certain dishes, especially the ghee podi Thatte idli and pineapple sheera, which I would come back for in a heartbeat. I’m giving it 4 stars only because the masala dosa – usually the litmus test at a South Indian eatery – fell short on texture and portion size. Fix that, and this would easily be a 5-star experience.

The best kind of South Indian cuisine i had till now. Filter coffee and mysorepak is a highlight of my visit. I would strongly recommend these to all who are visiting. All the items in the menu is good to have to any kind of age group. They are having warm and supportive staff.

Our go to place for south indian breakfast... We plan to visit everytime we are visiting some temple around Dadar, Prabadevi. Ghee tatte idli, Rawa Dosa, Masala Dosa, Pineapple Sheera are out favorites. Rasam vada also we tried but it's spicy due to pepper. Service is super quick and very reasonable prices. Only issue is finding a parking. Hence we always visit in the early morning. If you are planning to use public transport, get down at matunga station and it's walkable from there.

This place is definitely living upto its reputation of fantastic South Indian food. Went here over a weekend, definitely there was rush and you have to wait a while. Food is brilliant, simple, tasty and worth all the hype. Dosa is indeed great, so is filter coffee. Located in crowded area, so don’t try and drive here. Hygiene is definitely an issue. Table is just cleaned with a dirty clothes, utensils aren’t wasted properly it seems. Service is just average, maybe due to tremendous rush here. Definitely worth visiting.

This iconic pure vegetarian South Indian restaurant is in operation since 1939. Known for its authentic Udupi & Mangalorean cuisine, the restaurant is still an old style place with no frills. Mangalore Buns, Goli Baje, pineapple sheera and filter coffee are must try items. The service is quick but be prepared to wait to get a table.
