⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (4/5)
Ramashray in Matunga is one of those classic South Indian institutions that still feels properly “Bombay” – bustling, no-nonsense and absolutely focused on the food. I dropped in specifically to try their ghee podi Thatte idli and walked out very happy (and very full).
The ghee podi Thatte idli is easily the hero of the menu. The idli itself is thick and soft – that perfect Thatte style – with a beautiful fermented flavour. It comes drenched in ghee, with a generous ring of podi that clings to every bite. The texture, temperature and seasoning were spot on; this is the kind of dish you could reorder without thinking twice.
The pineapple sheera was another standout. Warm, fragrant and not cloyingly sweet, with enough pineapple to cut through the richness of ghee – it felt like a proper old-school dessert, the kind you’d expect from a place that’s been doing this for decades. If you have a sweet tooth, this is non-negotiable.
Where the experience dipped a bit for me was the masala dosa. For a place with Ramashray’s reputation, I expected a benchmark dosa, but it was underwhelming:
• The dosa was small in size compared to typical Matunga standards.
• The texture lacked crispness – instead of that satisfying crunch, the dosa kept crumbling even when handled gently, which made it messy and not very enjoyable.
• The masala itself was decent, but the base failed to carry it.
Service is fast, efficient and very typical of old-school South Indian joints in Mumbai – you’re seated, served and cleared quickly, which works well given the constant rush. Prices are reasonable for the quality, and the overall vibe is nostalgic: crowded, lively, with conversations, steel plates and filter coffee aromas all blending into one.
Overall, Ramashray still deserves its cult status for certain dishes, especially the ghee podi Thatte idli and pineapple sheera, which I would come back for in a heartbeat. I’m giving it 4 stars only because the masala dosa – usually the litmus test at a South Indian eatery – fell short on texture and portion size. Fix that, and this would easily be a 5-star experience.
