On the Grid : Odelay

"A beautiful hidden gem away from town. Odelay is our regular spot for coffee and food. Always fresh, consistent and served with a smile. Allpress coffee is delish. Definitely worth a stop before you hit the airport." - makebardo

Loved our stay. Room was so clean and comfortable. Check in and out were great. Massive bonus there was free parking underground and a cafe inside the hotel on the bottom floor. And washer and dryer in the room was so handy.

Rooms were neat and clean. Location is in Frankton, which is about 10kms away from Queenstown. The rooms are only serviced every 3rd day, wifi is very patchy and we experienced lot of signal drop, bathroom locks were broken in both the rooms we had booked, dishwasher was broken, bathroom light was flickering, bedside table lamp had wiring issues and was quite temperamental. Only 4 free parking slots are there which are almost always full so we had to park in a paid parking area. Views from the room are good.

This stay was a complete disappointment from start to finish and should serve as a warning to future guests. Despite arriving at 4:30 PM, we were told our room was not ready. From that moment on, it became clear that organization and guest care are not priorities here. We specifically chose this accommodation outside the city center because Booking.com advertises free parking. Only upon arrival were we told that parking was “limited,” forcing us to pay for parking elsewhere. In hindsight, this is almost absurd, as we later discovered that we were able to park for free in the city itself every single time. We literally paid extra money to stay in a worse, less convenient location. The room itself was in unacceptable condition. Even basic items such as soap were not refilled. The dryer made an extremely loud, vibrating noise and was completely unusable. There was a constantly flashing light, a sink that barely drained, and kitchen equipment that was in a shocking state. The pans were extremely dirty—far beyond normal wear—and clearly not cleaned properly. After waiting an hour for replacements, the situation barely improved. With a tiny sink and a poorly functioning dishwasher, it was practically impossible to clean anything properly at all. The most disturbing issue was the air-conditioning and ventilation system, which was visibly filthy and full of dust. Dust was blown throughout the room, covering our bed, clean laundry, and personal belongings. This is not just poor maintenance—it raises serious hygiene concerns. As bad as these issues were, what truly made this stay unacceptable was how our complaints were handled. We reported problems repeatedly throughout our four-day stay, ranging from missing basic supplies to serious cleanliness issues. Each time, we were reassured that something would be done, yet nothing was actually resolved. We were simply kept waiting and led on. Even after our stay, the management has completely ignored us and never responded. The problems themselves were already unacceptable, but the way they were handled is frankly embarrassing and shows a shocking lack of professionalism and customer care. We would not stay here again under any circumstances and strongly advise others to look elsewhere.

Probably the worst hotel experience I have had for quite some time. There were a lot of issues. Had a late check in and was left a key in a lockbox (reception closes at 8pm). Really bad smell in my room (stale smoke). Air conditioning not functioning. No opening windows. Floor was also dirty - not vacuumed. I rang for assistance twice and some annoyed sounding person arranged the night manager to come. I waited 40 mins for the night manager who then eventually found me another room 20 minutes later. The night manager was not onsite but at a different hotel and he knew about the air conditioning fault, which means the hotel knew and put me in that room anyway. The air conditioning was also not working in the 2nd room and the room was not clean either (dirty floor again) but it was midnight by this stage. Met another guest at checkout with the similar experience and had to have 3 different rooms before they found one that was acceptable. The hotel is generally in poor condition, clearly badly managed with strange smells from many areas. Very, very poor experience. Charging hotel prices for a backpacker experience. I will never be back. AVOID!!

The room was great. Big enough for us with huge luggages. We were quite happy as there are washing machine and dryer in our room but unfortunately the washing machine was out of order. Thankfully, there is a laundromat just below the hotel and it is quite convenient. Parking wise was also convenient as guests could part at the basement carpark with first come first served basis.

Room had a really foul odor from a spoiled yellow/green liquid mess in the fridge. No other rooms were available. We asked to cancel the reservation for a full refund and were denied. Staff said cleaning service sometimes misses things. They gave us breakfast vouchers. We were exhausted on last day of travel, hadn’t gotten dinner yet and too tired to fight it. No airport shuttle and very limited amount of parking.

This was my 1-year-old’s first trip, and I had specifically requested extra cleanliness for the room. Yet when we arrived, the entire corridor smelled of food, and the room itself was poorly ventilated and suffocating — completely unsuitable for a baby. We had no choice but to check out within 5 minutes of entering. To make matters worse, I had arranged a special surprise for our stay, but instead of discreetly setting it up, the front desk staff announced it at check-in, embarrassing the very guest it was meant for and ruining the moment before we even stepped into the room. The front desk displayed no empathy, no knowledge, and no problem-solving skills. She could not show the refund or cancellation policy in writing, offered no alternatives, and made no effort to accommodate us. For a hotel, this was shocking — the one person who represents the property to arriving guests was entirely unhelpful and untrained. I was told a manager would reach out the next day, but no one did. I had to follow up myself three days later. After explaining everything for 20 minutes, I was simply told to send an email. Still, there was no apology or acknowledgement of how distressing this experience was for our family. This was by far the worst hotel experience I’ve ever had, and I will never recommend this property to anyone.

I am writing to express my extreme disappointment and profound distress regarding a severe security incident that occurred during our stay at your hotel on August 23, 2025. This matter remains unresolved despite my attempts to communicate with your staff, and the lack of follow-up from your end is both unacceptable and unprofessional.||On the evening of August 23, 2025, at approximately 9:00 PM, my husband and I were in our room when we suddenly heard the door being accessed. To our shock, a tall, man successfully used a key card to enter our room without any prior notice or consent. At the time, I was fully clothed, but my husband was only in his underwear, preparing to shower. The intruder—who claimed to be a guest himself—explained that the front desk had provided him with a key card to our room, which he even showed us as proof. He then left to confront the front desk, but unfortunately, no staff were available at that hour.||This incident left us feeling extremely vulnerable and unsafe for the entire night. We were unable to sleep, plagued by anxiety that someone else might enter our room at any moment. The thought of what could have happened had I been in a state of undress is deeply unsettling.||The following morning, I reported the incident to the front desk and emphasized that, as frequent travelers who have stayed at your chain’s hotels worldwide, we had never encountered such a reckless breach of security. I expressed my anger and frustration clearly, yet the staff merely apologized and proceeded to process my payment as if nothing had happened. I requested a formal explanation and provided my contact information and email address for follow-up. However, it has been nearly a month since the incident, and I have received no communication whatsoever from your team.||This is not only a gross failure of your duty to ensure guest safety but also a blatant disregard for customer dignity and peace of mind. As a global hotel chain, your brand promises certain standards of service and security, yet you have failed spectacularly on both fronts. The fact that such a incident could occur—and that it has been ignored thereafter—is appalling and reflects poorly on your organization’s values and commitment to guests.
