We went to Ramen Danbo in South Brisbane recently on the recommendation of a food blogger whom I follow. Such recommendations can either be hit, or miss, depending on whether your view of the blogger's matches what you expect to find and taste. And what we found was a ramen rich in flavour and unique in its broths and ingredients, and a blogger who knows great food when it's poured into a bowl brimming with noodles and goodness. The entrance into this gastronomic gateway to ramen is through glass doors off Merivale Street and directly to an ordering and pay station - don't be surprised to find a queue outside its doors. You'll be presented with a menu, pointed to the most popular ramen items, then offered a choice of noodle textures, how spicy you'd like it, any accompaniments to add separately like Nori sheets, extra eggs, etc, then you pay, get a table number and sit. But before you have hardly taken your seat the bowls come out, steaming, rich in aromatics, and begging to be slurped. However, beforehand there's a choice of free additions awaiting you near the self-serve water urn, like minced garlic and pickled ginger slices so don't overlook these, and table-side accompaniments like a sinful chilli-sesame seed oil with a slow and serious heat, white pepper shakers and a neat tray beneath which houses the chopsticks, which are pretty decent for a plastic variety, napkins and more.
Once you have your ramen prepared the way you love it, slurp away and enjoy every drop of the delicious broth that's been brewed to perfection. This could be the best ramen in Brisbane and if you know of a better place, then please let me know. Parking can be a challenge, and I've read that some think the price for a rather small bowl of ramen which they serve is expensive. Yet, let's look at it this way. A plane ticket to Tokyo from Brisbane round trip is about $1,600 plus accommodation for ramen at one of its historical ramen houses, around $30, so $14 for a bowl of Brisbane's best is a small price to pay for the pleasures that Ramen Danbo brings to a palate thirsty for a true taste of Japan. Tanoshimu!
