We enjoyed our stay at Rancho Cerro Azul. The location was great and staff was very accommodating! We did a few tours and were able to get picked up at the hotel for all of them. We enjoyed the private patio and listening to all the wildlife. It was also great to have AC. The rooms are a bit dark. We did notice that the bathroom air got a little “stale” or musty, even with the daily cleanings. None of these things ruined our trip by any means, but just suggestions for improvement. 🙂

We stopped for lunch at the restaurant and we’re extremely happy with authentic Costa Rican food. The chef made extra effort to make each dish, very presentable and delicious. Prices seemed very reasonable considering that the food was high-quality gourmet but also authentic Costa Rican at the same time. There is also a lovely trail on the property, beautiful gardens, and even some games if you bring children. The restaurant overlooks lovely gardens with a nice atmosphere.

We stayed here for one night. It is a no frills cabin which provided a great experience for us. |Senor Alonzo at the front desk was very helpful and went above and beyond to make our stay comfortable. They also have a restaurant that has a simple yet tasty menu. ||The trail they have to the river was fantastic.

Staff, restaurant, and location was great but the rooms are not well maintained. When we arrived only 1 of the 4 lights in the room was functional and the lampshade has mold on it. The floors don’t get swept when housekeeping comes and with how much hiking we were doing, the dirt started to build up in only 3 days.

We traveled to La Fortuna June 2024 and were so happy to have found this gem of a hotel! The individual cabins are located among a lush, tropical landscape making it feel as if your cabin is the only one there! The pictures on their website appear old as the landscape is now fully grown making the other cabins almost impossible to view due to how big and lush the landscaping was. The reception are/restaurant are also different than in the website pictures and are open-air with beautiful views of the surrounding rainforest. Our cabin (#8) was perfect and the views from our back porch were amazing! We also had a private hot tub behind our room (which was very private, and surrounded by the same lush, tropical landscaping all around the hotel). The bed was very comfortable and the bathroom was great with plenty of storage for our clothes, a safe, hairdryer, etc. we also had a small fridge, microwave, dishes/utensils, and coffeemaker. There is also a trail through the jungle which leads down to the crystal clear cool waters of a beautiful river. We saw all sorts of wildlife on the property while on the trail (as well as from our back porch). The restaurant food was very good and the hotel staff were very responsive and accommodating. We did not have a vehicle but there are two restaurants within walking distance as well as a small convenience store. Cab and Uber drivers were easy to access and not very expensive. We were offered a voucher for complementary drinks at the on-site bar as well as one complimentary breakfast. We would definitely stay here agin!

The perfect home-base to all the adventures in the area. This property is run by cousins/family, and it shows. We loved walking on the trail along the river and the guided night tour. Easy to nearby restaurants and markets.

My husband and I enjoyed our stay here. The first night we arrived, it was very dark and there were ants coming into the room. However, Alonzo made sure we were comfortable and had them spray around the room. This was not a huge deal, as you are in the middle of a rainforest, so bugs are to be expected. However, he was so patient with us and made us feel so comfortable. The food was delicious as well and the guaro sour made by Roy is a must have! This is such a beautiful family owned business and run by a great family. Alvaro, their father was such a sweet and kind man. He has a warm spirit about him and always willing to go above and beyond to make sure you enjoy your stay at not only the hotel but in Costa Rica. They helped us book many tours with transportation. For me, I give Rancho Cerro Azul a 10/10 or 5/5. The internet was great and we had a smart tv with Netflix! I will be honest and say it won’t be for everyone. I love a hard mattress, so beware that if you do not prefer a hard mattress, you will have back problems as the mattress is very firm! I slept perfectly fine but my husband had back pain. If you don’t like ants, you won’t enjoy staying here as huge ants may come in through the doors; which for me, was not a big deal as I was in the rainforest with nature :) Other than that, if you can deal with all of these things, you will enjoy your stay here. We loved having our own privacy and we enjoyed the nature. This hotel is also near many of the popular spots and great restaurants down town La Fortuna. You will be treated like family at Rancho Cerro Azul and always greeted with warm smiles and a Pura Vida. We will definitely be back and will only be staying at Rancho Cerro Azul anytime we come. You have loyal guests in myself and my husband. Thank you for taking great care of us!! ~Pura Vida~
