I'd heard that Ranjit's was fantastic, and had been really keen to try it for ages. I was NOT disappointed! This place is a wee gem.
As it's a family run place, I wasn't sure what to expect, but it has clearly been very professionally thought out, and seemed very well-run. The seating is communal, at large tables, and although we had our own table for this visit, I thought it might actually be quite nice to have a chat with the other diners, as they looked like interesting people. The decor is simple, and very stylish.
The food is excellent. It's freshly made daily, and is nice and simple, made with traditional ingredients, so you can be reassured that you're not going to get any mad red food colouring or anything like that.
I was very pleased with the choice I had for vegan eating. The waitress explained very clearly to me what had cheese or butter in it, and she knew exactly what she was talking about. Vegans - all the channa has cheese in it - just so you know.
I opted for the Sabji of the day, which is their daily fresh vegetable curry. This one was potato and aubergine, and it was delicious. It came with 2 roti, and was very filling. For £3.95, this is outstanding value. This would have done me nicely really, but as it was my first visit, I wanted to eat everything, so also had some samosa. Oh my, best samosa ever! The pasty was light and crisp, not greasy at all, and the filling was fluffy and delicious. The tamarind chutney for dipping was also just right, not too spicy, not too tangy, just right for adding a little something extra to the samosa.
It's non licensed, and they sell a good range of soft drinks, lassis, and mostly fruit based drinks such as guava or passion fruit. I had a coconut water which was an ideal accompaniment for my meal.
I didn't have a sweet this time (no room, not even in my pudding stomach!) but I'd like to next time - the Snowflake Gulab Jamun looked most inviting.
We noticed a sign advising that Ranjit's can do catering, or bulk orders, and it did cross my mind that I could probably buy £20 worth of sabji or daal to take home with me, and it would keep me fed for a week. Worth exploring, definitely.
I'll definitely be venturing south-side to Ranjit's Kitchen again.
