I Visited 8 European Christmas Markets in 2 Weeks — and These Were My Favorites

"A spectacular, large-scale holiday market fronted by grand civic architecture, featuring a giant advent-wreath entrance, a double-decker carousel, artful light sculptures, a Ferris wheel with aerial views, an ice-skating rink under fairy lights, festive stalls selling ornaments and seasonal treats like bratwurst and sugar-coated pecans, and memorable souvenir glühwein mugs." - Allison Cacich

I was there with a friend in the summer and there was a great concert and a nice atmosphere. This time I went to the Christmas market. It's something incredible, I'm delighted, it's so beautiful. We had a great time and got a million pleasant emotions.

I’m very fond of this place. The best christmas market I’ve been to. You can find almost everything a christmas market should have. Many shops and beautiful christmas lights. Here are things you should know. - Ice skating prices are not expensive. Around 20 euros per 4 hours with rental. If you book online, it’s 1 euro cheaper. - The heart comes out every 30 minutes from sunset (you will know because the rathaus will light up) to 21:00. - There’s also a mug that changes colors when you pour hot water in it for only 5 euros.

The most enchanting Christmas market experience! The ambiance at Rathausplatz is unbeatable. Cozy, vibrant, and bursting with holiday spirit. It’s the perfect place to grab a warm drink, wander through the beautifully decorated trees, and soak up the Viennese festive cheer. Don't forget your camera!

Truly the most fascinating Christmas market out of every single one we visited. Even though it was November during our visit the Christmas spirit and mood truly gets to you the moment you step foot there. All the food we tried was delicious, we tried the potatoes with cheese and onions, honey and gingerbread cookies, apfelstrudel and Käsekrainer. And of course two rounds of red mulled wine!

The building is absolutely stunning—an impressive piece of architectural art. We visited during the Christmas season, and the atmosphere was truly magical. The Christmas market is large, beautifully arranged, and offers a wide variety of items to buy, from savory snacks to handmade crafts. The people were very friendly, which made the experience even more enjoyable. Overall, an amazing place—definitely a 10/10.

It been 3 years. since i have some photos that i took during my visit here during xmas 2022 dec, let me share some. This is the best Xmas market i have since during my UK to Europe to tour. I will definably will come visit Vienna again especially during xmas. I very fond of this pretty country. There no wait time or need to buy ticket since im here to visit the xmas market.

Google
The most beautiful christmas market I’ve ever been to. The only downside is that it was extremely crowded, so be prepared for long lines and navigating in a dense crowd of people. I would recommend going on weekdays if you want to avoid this. Other than that, there were so much food and drink to try! A bit pricy though.

A beautiful and lively square located in the heart of the city. The stunning architecture of the Rathaus dominates the area, creating a perfect backdrop for photos. The square often hosts seasonal markets, events, and festivals, giving it a vibrant and festive atmosphere. Walking around, I enjoyed the open space, the impressive fountains, and the charming surroundings. A must-visit spot for anyone exploring the city .

Yelp
Gorgeous building. We visited right after Christmas and the square is filled with Christmas markets, drinks, food and Christmas items. Definitely worth a visit

Yelp
Christmas market is so expensive you will not find anything to buy under €10 there there are so many cheaper alternatives that you can find in Vienna don't go here if you're not rich you will save much money

Yelp
Rathaus! This big public square in front of Vienna's City Hall is a nice place to take in the scenery! This is the location of the Vienna Christmas Market, where they have outdoor ice skating, lots of paved pathways where local businesses set up huts to sell sweets and decorations! This place is decked out to the max for Christmas- lights everywhere, a giant Christmas tree, carolers, and even a nativity scene! The place was well-patrolled, felt safe, and was certainly well lit! It's a huge area, with park benches around, and plenty of trees. It's a beautiful scene to take in the intricate views of City Hall and all the amazing architecture around the plaza. The landscaping is top notch! It's located about a block off the subway for easy transit. It's a pretty main station. They could've used more restrooms around here. With all the gluhwein, they need more WCs.

Yelp
Reviewing the Christmas market here. There are several Christmas markets in Vienna, but this one is probably the largest. There's an ice skating rink here, for example, and tons of vendors. It's absolutely a blast. Highly recommended!

Yelp
Amazing. Just a great place to relax, sit down with a coffee and take in your holiday. I really recommend going early in the morning or in the late afternoon, lovely place to take a break, great architecture.

Yelp
It was a real Christmas tale! Looks magic at night, ice skating (the one for adults near Hall and funny ice skating with pinguins for beginners apart). At the weekends you will see there people wearing their best (black tie, evening gowns). Christmas market with the mixed smell of candies, mulled wine, sausages. As a souvenior traditionaly you can take branded mulled wine cup with you) A bit of trivia: The Rathausmann would have some trouble finding comfortable footwear - he takes size 63 (size 29 in Great Britain)

Yelp
The Rathausplatz is the premier location to find a festival in Vienna. Its busiest and probably my favorite is the summer film festival with the large jumbo-tron and especially all the food huts. During the summer months you can also find a wine and bike exhibition and the Steiermarkdorf Fest, which is always a huge attraction. But don't be discourages if summer is not your fling, the Rathausplatz also has a hug park that comes alive during the winter months and showcases an awesome ice skating ring and the every famous Christmas Market.

Yelp
Public spaces in Vienna are truly for its residents and visitors, Rathausplatz is the park that leads to the Rathaus, or Viennese city hall. This space is used year round to stage public events and festivals. In the summer time, for example, you can find the taste of Vienna, and enjoy the best local restaurants have to offer. They also have film festivals and play movies in giant screens, or concert series where you can enjoy classical music while having a picnic on the lawn. US cities can certainly take a cue from these European Capitals that truly believe that public spaces are to be enjoyed by its citizens.

Yelp
This park is used for many outdoor events, celebrations and festivals. We have been for quite a few of them and have made many amazing memories here. One of the most memorable was the classical concert where we sat on the lawn with the whole family enjoying a nice picnic. Another great event is the taste of Vienna, you can find some great food from the local eateries. The Wienerschnitzel I had was the first time I had tasted it and was incredibly good. When you are visiting the city check out the events that might be going on at the moment. You might be pleasantly surprised.

Yelp
This is a public park in front of the City Hall. Not very big, but it gets used often for events and things. We are lucky to visit during the Christmas season one year, of course the thing to do is to go to a Christmas Market, and the one in Rathausplatz is the best! The large trees are festively adorned with hears and candy canes, beautiful! Groups of people walking around each clutching a mug of steaming Weihnachtspunsch (Christmas punch, mulled wine with spices and spirits and sugar) is very....well...Christmas-y. The aromas of roasted chestnuts, pretzels, pastries, candied fruits, cotton candy, and other delicacies wafting around every wooden stalls in the market make it impossible to decide what to eat, so the strategy is to stay long enough to try everything. We also popped into the City Hall, there were concerts and choir performance. There was also a children's "workshop", where tiny little kids were learning to make beautiful handmade gifts and cookies. It sounds corny to say, but I will say it anyway, Rathausplatz feels like Christmas fairyland that you read in books.

Yelp
It seems that every time I walk past the Rathausplatz there is something new going on. Last week it was the Air Vienna, this week Steiermarkdorf. A couple of months ago the park played host to the Eistraumlauf ice skating. What a fantastic city we live in, that there is always something going on and that the city puts on such events for its citizens. It makes me happy to pay taxes! 5 stars for the Rathausplatz and a hip hip hooray for Vienna in general!

Yelp
Walk around this old city hall. There are all sorts of blind alleys and random activity going on around it and in its vicinity. Almost perfect on a sunny day.
google avatar

Victoria Y.

Yelp
Don't miss the many many activities that they hold yearly here! They are all very attractive and fun. Here's also where the yearly famous Christkindelmarkt is being held. The film festival during the summer and circuses are also held here.

Yelp
The Rathausplatz is probably one of Viennas most beautiful and well known places. Its located just opposite the Burgtheater and obviously by the town hall and is set amongst a beautiful park. And the best thing about it is the fact that there is always something happening there, either a Wine Festival, Bike Festival, Christmas Markets, Ice Skating and of course the famous Life Ball amongst many other things. All in all, definitely a place worth visiting and a place that Austrians can be very proud of :)

Yelp
Stiermark Festival. If you like Lederhosen and Dirndls, thigh slapping, beer and French horns and Pretzels then this is the place to be. This makes Beisel look positively English. Well worth coming along and soaking up the atmosphere. Great venue.

Yelp
There seems to be always something going on on the place in front of Vienna's townhall. In summertime they have little restaurants serving at least 20 different kinds of food. and free showings of famous operas on a huge screen. In winter time they have the most beautiful Christmas decorations (all the trees are decorated) and a huge Christmas tree. There is a ridiculous amount of sellers selling hot Gluehwein, basically got wine with spices and of course there is ginger bread everywhere. In Septemer time the have other themed events and there is iceskating in January!

Yelp
The Rathausplatz in Vienna is a HotSpot not only in summertime when you have one festival after another and you an enjoy the atmosphere of the park and the great service of the bars or punschhuts or regional as well as international food places..... Like I said, its hard to know where to begin - rathausplatz offers a virarity of different occasions to come together and just enjoy life. Concatnly changing topics you can find there a christmasmarket followed by an ice skaiting range, followed by variouse regional topics (like styrian wine festival) followed by may festivals and life ball live performance, followed by festspielwochen (with operas AND movies on big screen and hundreds of cocktail and international food stands going on whole summer) followed by .... I could go on for the whole year and then it starts again :D If you are in Vienna you have to stop by and enjoy the Austria kind of savoir vivre in the ambience of the new gothic and amazing city hall!

Yelp
There is ALWAYS something going on in Rathausplatz, it's well worth stopping by and seeing what's happening, whether it be live music, festivals, outdoor films, circuses - you'll find it all at some point or another in Rathausplatz. And of course the city hall building, towering above with it's incredibly intricate architecture, you don't want to miss it!

Yelp
Rathausplatz, literally "City Hall Square", is one of the largest paved squares in the center of Vienna and is thus regularly used for events. In fact, it is seldomly really empty. In November and December, Rathausplatz houses one of Vienna's Christmas markets, in January and February, a skating rink, in July and August, an open-air film festival, in Spring, the Life Ball, the opening ceremony of the "Wiener Festwochen", Labor Day festivities, and various other events. Adjacent to Rathausplatz on both sides is the "Rathauspark", a nice, lush public park.
