Google
We had a really great time at Rathauskeller. It’s a proper German restaurant, exactly what you hope for when eating in Bavaria. The food was very, very tasty. The pork knuckle was excellent, and the schnitzel was also really good. Even the fries stood out, which is not always the case. Everything we ordered was spot on, from start to finish. We also enjoyed the wine, which was better than expected for this kind of traditional place. The restaurant is set in a big hall with lots of people, so it does get quite noisy, but that’s part of the experience. It really feels like a classic German beer hall—lively, busy, and full of atmosphere. The waiters were very kind and friendly, which made the evening even better. And to finish on a high note, the desserts were delicious as well. All in all, a great place for traditional German food, a warm atmosphere, and a real local experience. Definitely worth a visit.

Google
Ratskeller Augsburg offers one of the best German food experiences we’ve had. The food was incredibly tasty and truly authentic exactly what you hope for when trying traditional German cuisine. The menu had a great variety of classic German dishes, and everything we ordered was delicious. The drinks were excellent as well and paired perfectly with the food. What really made this experience stand out was the staff. They were incredibly friendly and very attentive, especially compared to other places in Germany where we unfortunately found the service to be quite rude. Here, everyone was welcoming, kind, and genuinely cared about providing great service. We had a fantastic experience overall and highly recommend Ratskeller Augsburg to anyone looking to enjoy authentic German food in a warm and friendly atmosphere.

Google
We had the best Radlers (lemon beer) and delicious schnitzel and other traditional foods here. The atmosphere is dark and cozy as well as lively too. I highly recommend trying it.

Google
The nicest place in all of Augsburg, both for the place itself and the tasteful food (not too expensive, I was expecting way more). There is a lot of choices, but the service - even in very kind and available - is a little bit slow. It is very recommended to book in advance (for groups even a MONTH) because it is not only good but also famous. Bonus point: big and clean bathrooms

Google
Fantastic dining experience. High quality dishes, impeccable service and an incredibly warm atmosphere in stunning old world surroundings. Will frequent more often when visiting Augsburg.

Google
This place has a special atmosphere. Tasty local cousine combined with special atmosphere makes this restaraunt outstanding.

Google
The best authentic German food in the area. Ate here two nights in a row and had the veal schnitzel with red cabbage and spaetzle... Phenomenal

Google
We came in with no reservation but the host was very accommodating and got us a table. The service was wonderful and the food was superb! Absolutely recommend!

Yelp
My wife found this place online and found it's location. From the way we entered, it was a little hidden from the outside and once inside the main building, we followed the signs to get inside the restaurant. This place had a very warm atmosphere with the lighting and wooden floor. I had the Schweinebraten and it was perfect. Crispy outside and tender inside. The portion size was more than enough. The red cabbage and potato dumpling with the gravy were excellent. Our server was great. Friendly and helpful while we decided on our meals. This is a great place to have a traditional German meal in a great environment.

Yelp
A sort of hidden gem. Literally. With the construction, the restaurant is even more hidden. The setting is unique. That alone is worth it. Food is good enough. Fair prices.

Yelp
Efficient service. Good food - had the salmon mustard sauce with fried potatoes. Cozy underground beer hall-like space with high ceilings.

Yelp
We came in on a weekday evening without a reservation but they had room for two for dinner outside. It was a nice summer evening. The server was very friendly and came by to check in on us at exactly the right intervals throughout the meal. The menu had traditional German food and the beer was also nice. We had such a nice time, we decided to get dessert as well. By the time we were finished with our meal, the sun had set and we strolled through the downtown to get back to the hotel.

Yelp
Great atmosphere and good selection of traditional German food. Beer selection was solid with friendly staff that spoke English.

Yelp
I stopped by here with my family while visiting Augsburg during Christmas markets season. I liked the vaulted ceilings. The food was pretty good. I think my only complaint was the temperature in the area. We were sitting was pretty cold. But overall, we enjoyed our meal. Our server was quite attentive and sweet.

Yelp
Somewhat hidden entrance. Great atmosphere and service. Good for large groups. Food was great.

Yelp
My husband and I were looking for gluten-free German food. This place does NOT have their gluten-free items marked on the menu. However, the waitstaff is very knowledgeable. They offered to substitute the bread for our order with potatoes. The food was excellent. Sadly, they didn't have gluten-free beer.

Yelp
Service is terrible. Waited 20 minutes for anyone to come to the table for drink order

Yelp
I'm going to just start off with the fact that the Scotch selection is pretty good for German restaurants. I always enjoy my time here. I have two favorite Ratskellers in Germany and this is certainly one. The food is so well done. Very authentic Bavarian food, easy to find game meat on the menu and done very well. It helps if you can make a reservation, but I find if you walk in speaking English then switch to high German the matradee may be so impressed he just might find a place for you. Something that Americans may not know about the idea of the German Ratskeller. First Rat in German means to talk. The Rat itself means town hall and keller, of course, is cellar. The idea here (and you will find this true here are well) is that you sit next to others and join in respectful conversation. If you are from one part of the town, and your table mate is from another, you can discuss issues that you both have (probably not the same issues) and you find out more about what is best for the township instead of thinking only of yourself. This kind of discussion creates an environment of respect and allows people to come together over a good meal and understand one another. So if you find yourself sitting next to another party, be polite, say hi, and find out a little about each other. You may find we are all not so different after all.

Yelp
High expectations after experiencing the Ratskeller in Munich. Good food and wine but service was not great. We were left without a server while a large table was taken care of . A simple solution would have been to let us know before being seated. Beautiful setting

Yelp
For me, it was the journey and not the destination. The walk from the Dorint Hotel to Ratskeller is pretty casual and easy, 15 minutes. If you are staying close, do yourself a favor and walk. Take in the city and environment. The food was pretty good. I dont recall exactly the name of the entree, it was the "meat plate" or something equivalent. Three different kinds of pork along with a dumpling (kind of gummy and a strange texture for Americans but it was good) and a slaw salad. The dark beer was very good, after 700 years the brewer can safely be called a master. The atmosphere in the evening was very welcoming, the lights were not obnoxiously bright or too low and some pretty relaxed music at a decent volume (you can have a conversation with the people sitting across from you). I went back a few days later for lunch just to see if this was a one hit wonder. I was not disappointed with lunch at all. The staff was quick and friendly and the food was once again pretty good. There is a good chance I will be back in Augsburg, I will definitely be visiting once again.

Yelp
I was visiting a friend in Augsburg and he brought me here for a literal taste of the local flavor. It's located in the basement of the Augsburg Rathaus (City Hall), and as the space is owned by the city, the restaurant can keep its prices low. The quality of the food, beverages, and service do not suffer for it. I'm told that it's a popular spot for wedding receptions and viewings for sports matches as well. I had an excellent dish of pork in a beer gravy, a potato dumpling, red cabbage, and a Radler to wash it down with. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants a good German meal in the heart of this historic Bavarian city.

Yelp
Nice atmosphere, albeit a little chilly considering we were seeking refuge from the damp cold outside; lured by the great reviews we headed down into the belly of the Ratskeller for lunch on our first trip to Augsburg. We were seated at a cramped two-person table next to a support column in the small lower level of the underground space; we felt lucky to get a seat at all, but would have preferred the ambiance of the more elegant upper area. The host & our servers were friendly, polite and fairly swift - especially considering we showed up during lunchtime on a busy Saturday. My Flammkuchen was decent, but the toppings could have been more thoughtfully distributed for the price - several slices were simply crispy dough with a couple strings of onion. My husband's Hirsch dish was fabulous, and my side salad was nicely flavored if a little hard to eat - about 3 enormous leaves stuffed into a cute little glass bowl. We left satisfied but will definitely give another place a try next time we visit.

Yelp
Everything I have had here has been wonderful. Try the cheese spread as a nibble. There is a dish with roasted turkey in it that I've had twice it's so good. The spaetzle with cheese is exceptional as well. We have been here three or four times on our visits to Augsburg. Also, if the weather is not freezing, don't miss the patio dining out the back. If you enter from the square, you might miss it!

Yelp
What a great yelp find! It's in the basement of the City hall, Rathaus.... Great food and one of the more inexpensive schnitzels I had the whole trip. This is a WINNER! WUNDERBAR!
google avatar

Dave S.

Yelp
This is an incredible restaurant and bar! It's underground in a beautiful cathedral building, with a lot of open space and amazing ceilings. The location is incredible, and in the middle of Augsburg. We had beers, delicious Moscow Mules, pork knuckle, and schnitzel. The knuckle has some of the most well cooked crispy skins I've ever had, and the schnitzel is great (not quite Vienna level, but really nice). Check this place out...worth every minute. And they have a great happy hour during the week! Until 2000 hours, cocktails are 1/2 off!

Yelp
Location is great and so is the ambiance. The drinks we had were excellent. As someone who's lived and eaten in Germany for most of his life, I have to say the food was mediocre at best. Nothing was quite horrible (except for the Caesar salad, that was a bit on the disgusting side, way too much dressing and soggy) but there was definitely nothing memorable. The pretzels were very un-Bavarian and soft, not crunchy on the outside as they're supposed to be. Bottom line: I wouldn't go here for lunch or dinner but I think going here for drinks and a soccer match on the big screen might be fun.

Yelp
The food is great, especially for the price. We had the Schnitzel and pork medallions and both were great. The atmosphere is more hip than traditional, which is a nice change from typical German-fare cellars. Although the service was rather slow, the waiters were very friendly and accommodating. Definitely come here for a relaxing, social meal, rather than a quick bite.

Yelp
Wonderful place in a beautiful setting. The food is very good as are the staff. If it's a beautiful day, do yourself a favor and sit outside. The inside is just as wonderful. Will definitely recommend to anyone in the area.

Yelp
typical German regional cuisine in a typical town hall cellar atmosphere After an exhaustingly long walking tour of Augsburg ending up in the Golden Saal at the top of the Town Hall, we were very happy to be able to just take the elevator all the way down directly into the cellar for a restaurant with arches and high ceilings and an attractive huge screen with projections of winter landscapes. Our food and drink were as expected in a traditional German restaurant: dark beer, a special regional soup with pieces of pancakes instead of noodles (Flädlesuppe), a sort of regional ravioli served in a broth (Maultaschen). We weren't expecting a gourmet experience and didn't pay for one either. Friendly servers in a historic environment and reasonable prices fit the bill.

Yelp
I like their traditional German food in their grand but comfortable space. Prices are reasonable and at center of town. Friendly and fast service. This place is not fancy but definitely feels like you are out and about. I've tried about half of their traditional dinner menus and they are good sturdy deliciousness. Roasted pork - how can you go wrong? Crunchy outside skin and juicy inside meat.

Yelp
Bartender was so rude!!!!!! We tried to sit at the bar and he made us move to a table because he didn't feel like serving us. I could tell right when we sat down he was annoyed with us. Anyway once we moved our server Ramona was wonderful. Food was very good, English friendly menu is available. Fix your attitude bartender!!!!! You're not that cool just because you're a Brit working in Germany get over yourself honey! He even allowed some other people, assuming his friends, to sit there and served them after making us leave!!! Ugh! Left such a sour taste in my mouth.

Yelp
We visited on a busy Saturday when the Christmas market opened. The host sat us at an empty table reserved for a large party coming in a hour. We were given menus and waited. Twenty minutes passed, and the server showed up apologizing. We ordered beer, still water, appetizers and entree. Despite seeing carafes and glasses of water go by she sold us a bottle. Our beer and water were delivered. The server was busy with other large parties. My husband noticed another couple who sat after us and had drinks and food. We waved down another server and asked for 2 more beers. Our server finally showed with the beer but no food. It had been 45 minutes since we sat down. We told her we were leaving and she actually started to calculate a tab. The host, who I think was the manager cleared our tab. We left without eating!

Marius G.

Yelp
I'm not sure whether the cooks were simply overwhelmed or the ratings here are overly good. The schnitzel was 2cm thick, the breading almost invisible. The fries were cold and boring. The mousse (white chocolate) was definitely from a prepackaged, completely tasteless. We won't come back, sorry.

Yelp
Great setting in the basement. Beautiful architecture. Food is delicious. Staff was very friendly. English menus were useful and they accept credit cards.

Yelp
Ambiance great. Location great. Kind of hard to find but fun to look for! Food was really good too. Service was nice. Not sure why only a four just know it wasn't a five for me. Parking is a bit crazy. It is a "should do".

Yelp
Outstanding service and outstanding food in a great setting! Had two kids with us and they loved it too. You won't be disappointed...this is quintessential Germany at its finest!

Wonderful food and atmosphere. Lots of vegetarian options. It's a welcoming restaurant; I could hang out there forever.
