The IPA beers here are delicious. I suggest the Imperial Apple Ale! The sandwiches and salad came out super fresh. Only downfall is the service. A little slow and confused. But they were really nice. Would I visit here again???? Yes!!!

Stopped here last year and it's a gem. If you're ever in Port Huron, Mi you really need to stop in. The food was amazing. Drinks too. I highly recommend the mushroom with Brie cheese soup. The souvenir corner has great gifts such as art, t shirts, mugs, shot glasses and house coffee that smell amazing. If you need a size larger than they carry hit their red bubble store for larger sizes. The service was amazing, the food was great and the ambience ...brilliant. Great place. Check it out.

Wonderfully weird, magical & mysterious. This is one of my favorite places in the world. The people the food the drinks (which includes coffee and booze) the decorations - It has it all. You lose yourself in this place and somehow become invisible amongst the enthralling atmosphere and I love it. If you haven't been here, you must change that. If I could give this place a thousand stars, The Raven 🐦‍⬛ would have earned it years ago.

Google
Always a delightful experience. We typically just grab coffee so the expansive menu was a surprise! I had the soup flight and they were all delicious (Baja chicken and the Mushroom were my favorites) and the Spinach Artichoke Dip with soft pita was absolute perfection. The Rooks Parlour coffee may be my new favorite and we drink a lot of coffee!

Sat down at 1 for lunch and waited for a server to stop by. 30 mins (real time, not exaggerated) later and I walked up to a server and asked who would be helping us. She said that the server for that section was super busy but she would get our order and drinks. She came to take our order almost immediately and I ordered a French dip, alcoholic drink from the menu, and my wife ordered a BLT. The server brought my wife her water immediately and then I didn't see anyone for 20 mins. The server stopped by to let me know that the drinks in ALL OF THE MENUS are no longer offered. I just said I would take a water and she got me that. Another 30 mins goes by and as we are getting up to leave our server shows up with our food and an apology for how long it took and disappears again. My French dip doesn't have the additional items that I ordered (offered on the menu) and I have potato salad instead of chips. I look up and the servers are all gone again so I just eat it. The server comes back to drop off the check and let's us know that she took off 10% for our wait. I look at the check and she had entered the order correctly so the kitchen staff is also to blame. I ask to have the additional charge for the food I never got and she came right back to get our payment with the right amount. From start to finish we watched 3 tables below us turn over twice and we're finishing their meals as we left (so 3 families ate in the time we were there). I don't know where all the reviews about great service and food came from but that was definitely not the experience that I had at Raven Cafe. In the end the food was good but not great and I don't have 2 hours to dedicate to a "just fine" sandwich so I won't be back and I hope I can save you that time as well.

No longer my favorite PH restaurant, atmosphere be damned. Greek salad no chz & stuffed pepper soup (maybe the only homemade soup) on Thurs 3/21/24. The soup tasted super sweet, like brown sugar was dumped in it. You can see the salad greens I set aside are half rotted, not to mention whatever else is in the rest. This is what you get for a $10.99 salad now? I can safely say I think something is very wrong bc I used to make big beautiful salads in that kitchen. Got takeout bc I was finally getting over illness (I masked to pickup) and paid $17 + tip for inedible food. I was mad that I ate a few bites before realizing. I got sicker and developed stomach symptoms for over a week after this, I think it's at least partially related. People who saw this said they'd give it back and ask for a refund. That may have been the kinder thing to do. 100% of the last 6 drinks I've had in the past year were AWFUL. All lattes or drip coffee so idk how it can be so bad when it has historically been a good place for a decent cup. My partner got drip coffee there in the early afternoon almost a year ago and couldn't even drink it. We're not picky, we'll drink bad coffee. A cup is a cup. But that was the worst cup of "coffee" I've ever tasted, we still joke about that sock juice. Went a couple months ago for a matcha latte (newer item)--no foam and tasted like dirty water. And I love earthy flavors and matcha. idk how, almost no matcha flavor in it at all and looked more brown than green when it arrived. I almost sent it back (I never do that), but I needed to focus on an online test. Each drink I've had made me not want to come back for months at a time, but I keep trying to return to support local, and I just keep getting burned. I was hoping this place isn't finally falling off it's last legs, but I can't contribute anymore, even if I do want to support an LGBT+ friendly business 10 mins away. This used to be my favorite place. I wanted to work here since I was about 12, when my brother used to manage the kitchen and designed some menu items many moons ago under Jerry's ownership. I finally did work the food line in 2021, for about a year. One of my best friends managed the kitchen at the time and did their very best until leaving some months after me. We worked like dogs and I was asked if I wanted to come back a few months later. I've started to think it's something against me personally bc that many problems in over a year is wild. I wasn't even going to leave a review about the salads as they went downhill, in hopes it was just orders with my name on it that get fudged. I honestly hope so, because DAG. Lots of my friends have and still do work, perform, and frequent this establishment. It holds memories and a special place in many peoples' hearts, including mine. I'm so sad to see it like this.

Google
Food was delicious! The French onion soup was the best I've ever had. Wonderful staff and had amazing vibes! Most definitely worth going to.

Google
I am showing a photo of the Venetian Herb Crust Chicken Sandwich. Notice the homemade potato salad had red skinned potatoes?? This place is an absolute feast for the eyes as well, with art on the walls, with handcrafted stained glass items, live music and I’m not even done looking around yet! We will be back!

Yelp
We love this place and stop here any time of the day when we are in Port Huron. This time we had just crossed the blue water bridge from Canada where we got to experience the totality eclipse. It sounded like everyone at the Raven went outside at 3pm Monday to also experience a not quite total one. The food here is always amazing and very tasty and the drinks are scrumptious. The wait staff are gems especially when we sit upstairs and they have to go up and down a lot

Jennifer C.

Yelp
Awesome atmosphere! Extensive drink list for alcoholic and non-alcohol! The tropical colada smooth was delicious. The enigma sandwich was pretty good. The down fall was, we sat in the upstairs area, the floors were very dirty, chunks of food pieces all over, tables were not wiped down.

Drew E.

Yelp
Raven Café is truly amazing! The decor of the café is gorgeous and has a very inviting ambiance with cozy lighting and books galore and even games. There are many great drink choices from coffees and teas to alcoholic beverages. Also, a decently-sized food menu with pretty much every café food you may need. The service was great even in such a bustling café. Every aspect of this place is great!

Jody K.

Yelp
Because of all the great reviews I read about the Raven, I decided to go there for lunch. What a neat place this is! I came in through the back parking lot, so had to go up the stairs. Lots of fun signs & pictures along the way. I sat at a small table on the main floor -- so much to see! I ordered the half lemon chicken salad sandwich and a cup of mushroom brie soup. The sandwich was fine, but the soup was really good. My server, Idyll, was very good, making sure I had what I wanted and very personable as well. After I ate, I went upstairs -- which overlooks the downstairs. It looks like a comfy library, with couches and books and tables everywhere. Honestly, since I couldn't really find much to do in Port Huron, I should have just hung out there longer. I'm not sure that I'll go back to Port Huron, but if I do, I would definitely come here again.

Michael P.

Yelp
Was in town for a tattoo and when that was done I was hungry! It was suggested that I check the place out and really liked it! I has spinach dip for an appetizer which was good but I prefer more spinach than cheese. Then had lobster bisque and the grilled cheese. Overall a nice meal and I liked that they have an extensive bar and coffee bar. I would definitely come back and check out more of what they got. Very eclectic interior with nick knacks and art for sale.

Yelp
dark and sweet experience... My last day in Port Huron, I was taken to a coffee shop because I'm a snob at heart and love discovering hidden gems, and this visit did not disappoint. We entered through the alley, and there was so much to take in that it was impossible not to fall in love with the place immediately. Dark themes include ravens, death, and the author Edgar Allan Poe. The Raven Cafe's inspiration for its collection of "bitty baddies" was a highlight among the local artwork I viewed. I knew the moment I laid eyes on them that I had to have them (now if only they were available as tiny dolls). The swag was so interesting that I ended up buying a few things before I even tried the coffee. Finally, I pursued the menu and ordered a nutty Irishman (mmm, that sounds good) with a classic almond biscotti for dessert Sandwiches, soups, and pastries are among the other tasty options. Check out the brunch and dinner menus, some of which have live acoustic music playing. The coffee may have been the initial draw, but I lingered for the cryptic artwork and rhyming couplets. The cup of coffee I was given was among the best I've ever had. My highest rating (5 stars) goes to a magical encounter at a top-tier coffee shop.

Linda S.

Yelp
I liked the specialty drinks. They were each well crafted and cute themes based on Edgar Allen Pie's work. The only issue is that if you're not feeling sandwiches for lunch. That's one of the only things you can get. Ambiance was cool. All dark and Edgar Allen Poe themed with libraries and books and a fake mannequin. Service was slow, but i think that's because I came at a packed time. Lunch time gets very full. You seat yourself so keep that in mind!

Katie S.

Yelp
The restaurant ambiance is very cute and definitely embodies the Allen Poe/ library cafe theme. It is a seat yourself eatery and lunch options were sandwiches, wraps, soups and salads at good prices. Highly recommend the mushroom soup and grilled cheese sandwich. A good place for brunch but loud and very busy. The servers definitely work hard to keep up! We appreciated how when our server handed us the wrong drink he came back 5 minutes later with the correct one. We would have never would have noticed but the gesture meant a lot.

Kelly P.

Yelp
Awesome atmosphere!!! So much to look at it and take in! The coffee was excellent and the breakfast was good - not a huge selection though.

Megan P.

Yelp
I have had Raven Cafe on my list of places I wanted to visit for a longgg time and I am so happy I finally stopped in! Service was impeccable!!!!! Ren was amazing and works so hard, it's pretty amazing to watch. There is a plethora of drinks to choose from and the frozen tea drink I had was delicious. The chicken enchilada soup was super yummy too. And finally - the decor......so warm and unique and comforting. I've heard others rave about how welcoming and cozy Raven Cafe is, and I completely agree. This place is truly a great spot and I highly recommend.

Mahoosive M.

Yelp
This place is so fun!! I love to be surrounded by books and nerdy things! The coffee is fantastic and the food is delish. The workers are so welcoming and kind and I just adore the ambiance. I look forward to sitting on their balcony in the summertime overlooking the water.

Virginia P.

Yelp
I wish this gem wasn't so far away from me. Although maybe it's a good thing it is. We stopped in for coffee and dessert. Our waitress was very outgoing and friendly, made great recommendations, and dressed/presented our desserts beautifully. The Raven has such a cool vibe. There is so much to look at, read, and chat about while waiting for your food. If you have no idea what to order, just ask. I don't think you will be disappointed. I'm looking forward to our next trip there and enjoying more of their wonderful food/coffee

Bcherry68 J.

Yelp
Fantastic atmosphere and the best sandwiches in the western hemispher. all of them are Poe themed, but still familiar. the wait staff is friendly and works their tails off. the live music on Friday nights just adds to the experienc.

Laurie P.

Yelp
I absolutely love this charming, cozy cafe, except for one thing - they're an hour away from my house! Food, drinks, service and ambiance are all excellent. The desserts are decadent. Generous portions of everything, too! If you're ever in the Port Huron area, I can't recommend this place enough!

Sarah D.

Yelp
The raven has always been my favorite coffee spot in Port Huron! They have a great lunch menu and it's a great spot to have some lunch and get some work done on the computer. I always stop here when I come into town!

Elise F.

Yelp
Interior is interesting, dark bar with eclectic wall hangings, small tables tucked in around the space. Service was good (not great). Coffee was ok, not very hot for fresh espresso. They gave us shelf stable cream packets which seemed wrong for a true coffee bar to serve. We tried a few soups, none were standouts and our sandwiches were just ok. Overall not sure I'd return, but possible to try dessert.

Jason G.

Yelp
My favorite coffee house in the entire universe! (Disclaimer: I haven't actually travelled the known universe) This place has it all. An extensive menu of sandwiches and probably my favorite chili in town The full Arsenal of designer coffees is of course the draw But if you have ever said to your self "ya know what Starbucks needs? Booze!" Then this is the coffeehouse for you!!! Aside from an Irish coffee the Milky Way coffee is just delightful. Plus the kids love the shakes here It's Edgar Allan Poe themed and many menu items have ties to his works. My rule is I order any meal named after a story if I just read it! A port huron institution and a destination! Come see it!

Mark P.

Yelp
We visited Port Huron on a whim and came upon Raven Coffeehouse. Not only is the whimsical atmosphere a joy for avid readers, they also manage to bring in artists and musicians to round out a truly enjoyable experience. The food and drinks are also a favorite. Being vegetarian, there are plenty of delicious options and I don't know what it is, but I've never fallen so hard for a Greek salad. Spices are out of this world and the chipotle ranch is a one of a kind. The hummus veggie sandwich was also bomb - the potato salad was the fuse. Our server was also super chill, professional and easily handling 10 tables at the same time (probably more since there are 2 floors!). We would highly recommend this spot and given the non-veg reviews, we hope this balances out the well-rounded reviews. Thank you, Raven Coffeehouse for making the trip worth while! We always look for the food spot and this was it! Update: We ordered the fudge brownie sundae 5 minutes after writing the review...damn...so good!

Kristin C.

Yelp
I was very excited to try this place after my girlfriend said it was so good. The atmosphere is great. There's a lot to look at. We sat upstairs and loved all the little signage that was on the walls. We asked for hot sauce with our meals that we were sharing between three of us and it looks a little weird, so I looked at the expiration date and it said 2018. So that kind of grossed me out and there was some thing off with one of our meals that all three of us just could not stomach. I don't know if it was the taste of the cheese or what but we ended our brunch early. Other than that everything was great.

Wander L.

Yelp
Neat place with cool atmosphere but half my Ruben was dang near empty and the place is very very dirty. Especially sitting upstairs looking over.

Tori A.

Yelp
The badassery this place is- it's just beyond me. The entrance is so cool, the attention to detail, the cozy yet gloomy yet intelligent vibes radiating from this place soothes my emo heart. The staff was so friendly and attentive even though this place was so packed with customers- a tribute to how great this place is. Art and stickers and cool merch to choose from. And a handful of different coffee roasts to choose from makes my espresso loving heart happy. I had a hot chunky monkey latte and my partner stuck with a classic hazelnut latte. We shared a Thai chicken pita pizza and the enchilada soup. Everything was absolutely great. The menu absolutely has something for everyone- from coffee to adult bevs, sandwiches and soups and salads and sweets. I literally cannot wait to come back here. It's only a hop skip and jump from Detroit so I'm hoping to get back here soon.

Amy W.

Yelp
OH MY GAWD!!!! I can not say enough about this magnificent spot!!! I would give it 10 stars if I could!! We parked for free on the street and walked over. Your eye is immediately drawn to the ravens outside. There is outdoor seating in front as well. Walking in is almost overwhelming! So much to see!! I don't think the pictures could do it justice. You really need to go and see for yourself! There was something to see on every single spot in that place. WE decided to go upstairs, where the balcony style seating overlooked the downstairs. Books line the walls, and you are free to take one and sit and read. There are tables up there, but also a chair rail, and couches as well. We we first arrived there was a group of college kids studying. By the time we left, a knitting club had left and were knitting. There is a balcony out back that overlooks the water. We chose to sit at a table and perused the menu. I was expecting mostly coffee drinks, and maybe a few cocktails. You can add any type of alcohol to any of their coffee drinks! So, you had a huge variety of choices. There were seasonal cocktails, and even a Pride Cocktail Menu. Great choices. They were clearly pride friendly, which I always love. They have a seasonal selection of cocktails which were all named after Detroit bars. I loved that touch! We started off with two coffee drinks and two slushes. By the end we had put a good dent into that cocktail menu! haha. Now, I love a good gimmick, but typically places that are like that lack in so many other ways. NOPE! We had absolutely amazing service, despite how busy it was! Our server, Zack, was super patient, helpful, and friendly. He never seemed rushed, even though he was slammed with customers. The food menu was very full as well. I was super impressed! I chose the Sicilian, which was superb! I literally could have sat there all day long. The great part is, this is only 45 min from me! I definitely see myself hanging out here quite often. I'm excited to bring others to this location!

Tiffany T.

Yelp
The Raven is a MUST if you are in Port Huron. I try to visit once a year and this is one of my first stops. They have amazing homemade food and HUGE amount of coffee options. I am a bit obsessed. There's a lot of vegan and gluten free items! I had a delectable gluten free blondie a la mode. Bless them for that!! If you are an Edgar Allen Poe fan this is an ABSOLUTE necessity.

Kelli K.

Yelp
Such a fun place! The decor is awesome, especially if you're a fan of Edgar Allen Poe. Can be quite busy at times, so be prepared to wait if it is peak hours. The soup flight and Italian sodas are my go to :)

Craig G.

Yelp
Always great food delivered to the table hot and tasty. The many different beverages from coffees and the many alcoholic drinks made to perfection. Always a good time with the servers great personality! Definitely recommend and we will be back!

Ron P.

Yelp
Just went there for the first time. Wifey had bowl of soup and have sandwich and I had a sandwich. She had the grilled Ruben, the cheese was not melted, and the meat was ice cold yet the bread was grilled and toasted. Her French onion soup had soggy crotons. My turkey and Swiss was adequate.

Brian E.

Yelp
Really good coffee house in PH. Please people, skip Starbucks and start finding the great quirky local shops like this one. The staff was very helpful, they had a huge selection of whole bean coffee. They asked a few questions about my preferences and were able to make some solid recommendations. I took home the Rooks Parlour Roast (their house blend) and Dharma Beans- Medium Roast The sandwiches were fantastic as well

Molly K.

Yelp
We found this place before a wedding a few years ago. When we visited from FL we drove up to see it again. Love the ambiance and food is always phenomenal.

Sammie V.

Yelp
Love. The ambiance and friendly staff they very nice to my. Group hat game in I would come back to try the food but I only A drink it was amazing

Patti S.

Yelp
I had to go to Port Huron for a presentation and stopped here for a bite to eat. I love the fact that it's in a historic building! The food was top notch, service was excellent, and I really wanted to peruse the books and hang out but...OMG the music. I'm not sure what the vibe was supposed to be but blaring--and I mean BLARING--punk music at 3pm was not it. I have gone to probably 100 or more concerts in my life, grew up with a Walkman blasting in my ears, wore the Anarchy shirts with the best of them and still couldn't take it. I had to put on my earbuds. I really wish I could have spent more time amongst the books but the noise, man. Excuse me while I go yell at a cloud.

Rose M.

Yelp
I absolutely love this place! I wish I lived closer! The ambiance of the Raven is really cozy. Books line the walls upstairs on the second floor and there a a balcony that looks out to the water and Canada is on the other side! There are tables and couches, a great place to do some work or read a book, catch up with friends. I love coming here for lunch with friends, and trying a new soup. When the Pumpkin soup is in season, I definitely recommend trying it! The favorite go to for me is the Mushroom Brie or the Lobster Bisque. Honestly everything here is so tasty! My favorite fall favorite is also a pumpkin chai. They have boozy coffee as well if you're wanting a little more festive in your cup. The owners are wonderful people, the art on the walls and windows are really unique and I love seeing local businesses supporting local artists! Overall an awesome place to go!!!

Laura H.

Yelp
I'll take the advice of others and just come here for coffee and tunes next time! Our recent visit was less Poe and more Kafkaesque. I wish I took a picture of what we were served on this particular day. What we ordered: a turkey ruben with sauerkraut and a turkey ruben with coleslaw, each with a side of potato salad. The menu advertised them as grilled. What we were served: a toasted ruben and an untoasted ruben, both with corned beef, with the potato salad. I sent my sandwich back. It was replaced with a cold turkey, cheese and cole slaw sandwich on toasted (dry, no butter) bread - not grilled, and without thousand island dressing. Rather than return the sandwich a second time, I simply asked the waitress for a side of thousand island. She returned with the dressing and made a point to tell me the kitchen told her they put thousand island on their rubens, which was a very peculiar, not very hospitable thing to say as I demonstrated my cold, dry, no-dressing turkey and cheese sandwich. It wasn't especially crowded. We all have our "off" days, I guess.

Gale L.

Yelp
This "coffee house" has cold coffee, below average food & needs a power washing. it's filthy.

Julia J.

Yelp
Very cool place. The local beer selection was very good and the food menu was extensive. It's a great place for drinking coffee and reading. Fun local artwork and hundreds of books surrounding the seating areas. I'd return again for the ambiance & Aruba. Food was good.

Jim D.

Yelp
Great soup and sandwich shop. Atmosphere is really cool. Food never disappoints. Friendly staff

Liz B.

Yelp
My only major complaint is that they need more space because I am always sad when I can't find a seat and have to go elsewhere. The drinks are delicious and consistent. Huge fan of their drip coffees. The salads are the best, full of good, well cleaned lettuce and topped with a massive amount of tasty toppings. Chicken salad and the flat breads are my 2nd best go-to after the salads. Atmosphere is epic, full of books and beautiful wood. The service can be hit or miss, I would not recommend going if you're in a rush.

Anna D.

Yelp
Found this hidden gem in Port Huron. If you want to feel like you're in JK Rowling best seller, definitely stop in. The cafe is so cute. With all the decor and local merchandise for sale and definitely felt like I was in a restaurant in Daigon Alley. I ordered the soup sampler and everything was absolutely delightful. I had the chicken noodle, chicken tortilla, mushroom Brie, and lobster bisque. I only wished they served them in bigger containers. The tiny ramekins it came in was a little disappointing but I would have ordered 2 orders they were that good. I highly recommend this hidden gem in a returning neighborhood of Downtown Port Huron.

Nikki T.

Yelp
I loved the ambiance, we sat outside on the top balcony looking out at the lake, all the books and pics were awesome. Service was a little slow, but waiter was nice. The food was all great... Would recommend!!!

Jacqueline A.

Yelp
The ambiance is very unique as it is based on Edgar Allen Poe which happens to be one of my favorite authors. Had a great iced coffee and a delicious sandwich. Highly recommend this establishment.

Paula D.

Yelp
It was about the only thing we found open on a Tuesday afternoon, but it was charming The food was tasty and the service was excellent. The decor was nothing less than fascinating.

Amelia B.

Yelp
A coffee shop with Beer, cocktails and food. What else could you need? The menu was pretty big, the coffee was delicious, and just looking at everything was fun enough. Its the best Emo Coffee house Ive ever been to. They do have 2 floors, but we got coffee to go this day. It was a hot day so we tried the Coffee Shakes- which were delightful!

Maureen B.

Yelp
Just moved to the area and tried this place out. What a find!!! Live music, great soup/sandwiches, and amazing blended coffee drinks. If you also want a quiet night with a good book and coffee this place has what you need. A must try!

Juan C. A.

Yelp
We went today for lunch at Huron to this place. It has a unique ambience and atmosphere very cool, place is cozy. Food was ok and very fair for the prices. They have a very extensive menu for coffee and drinks.

Cheryl B.

Yelp
The ambience of this place is amazing. To the way it is set up, to the books on the wall, to the photos and the paintings, to the lighting itself... The ambience is amazing. The food choices are ample, as long as you eat meat. I am a vegan and the options were minimal. They brought me something different than what I ordered which wasn't good. What vegan food they did have listed they did not have in stock. I was given a very bland wrap in exchange for what I had originally ordered and the rap was bland and tasteless. I would recommend calling in advance to make sure vegan items are in stock. This is the reason that I gave it a 3. I love the ambiance but the food choices for vegans were not the best and I didn't even get to try what they had listed.

W W.

Yelp
Love the Raven! A great place to enjoy a latte, beer and grab a cup of lobster bisque, sandwich or a variety of salads to nachos. Everything on their menu is great! The service is always friendly and you are never rushed. Really neat atmosphere and lots of art to admire.

Melissa W.

Yelp
Great vibe and delicious coffee and food. We would definitely go back. The service was excellent as well.

Laura S.

Yelp
Eclectic atmosphere. Great drink menu. Solid food. Crowded seating, many stairs from the back parking area, if any mobility issues try to park in the street. Overall I enjoyed the vibe. Had lunch here with my mom. She had soup and a sandwich which she really liked. I had a salad.

Stephanie Bartley H.

Yelp
One of my favorite places when I come to Port Huron and the best café in Michigan! The food and beverage selection is fantastic! The atmosphere and decor are great!! You want to wander to see all the cool stuff in this space!! They also have alcoholic selections for the coffees as well! They often have live entertainment & their service is impeccable .

Nichole W.

Yelp
I went here based on the high reviews - I was not impressed. When it is crowded, there is nowhere to stand to wait and it is 'seat yourself'. Downstairs restrooms did not have soap in either dispenser. Latte was tasteless and without foam. Nachos had cheese whiz. Ambiance was unique. Service was rushed. Soups were mediocre.

Yelp
The service was excellent, considering they were short-staffed and packed during our visit. The coffee is strong enough, and the food is tasty. I did miss the absence of a farmer-type choice of eggs and breakfast potatoes on the menu. I wonder if the kitchen size has something to do with this.
