10 Best Ranches and Lodges for Families in the American West - AFAR

"Situated on 250 acres within Roosevelt National Forest and operating seasonally, this long‑standing guest ranch (established 1948) is prized by families for its back‑to‑nature atmosphere and multigenerational return visits. Nine cozy western‑themed cabins feature timber floors, wool bedding, wood‑burning stoves, and rocking‑chair verandas, and daily life centers on hiking and biking trails, back‑country horseback rides (with opportunities for kids to groom and feed horses), fishing on the Big Laramie River, and supervised outdoor pursuits like tomahawk and knife throwing and archery amid abundant local wildlife." - Jennifer Flowers, Nora Zelevansky, Devorah Lev-Tov

My husband I celebrated our 16th wedding anniversary at Rawah right before they closed for the season this year (early Oct). We were only able to stay for a short trip and it was truly out of a dream. It's like no other trip we've ever taken. We flew into Denver and drove the 3+ hours there (make a stop at buckyees on the way!). Cell service stops right out of Fort Collins, fyi. There is no reception or WiFi at the ranch except at the lodge. The ranch is beautiful, the accommodations are very comfortable & charming. The fall scenery at this time was amazing. The staff of Rawah really make it what it is. We met everyone and appreciated everyone's knowledgeable and helpful demeanor. Impressive is how these folks are the real deal - Tim has wild stories about rescues into the mountains on horseback into the night (others in the area who needed expert help, not guests to be clear!), Hallee's background with horses leaves the novice at ease / feeling safe (even got me to lope!), Olivia's baked goods have you popping into the kitchen area to see what treats are there that day, big thanks to Zack for helping us find the rainbow trout even with our poor hook setting skills! We stayed at the Indians cabin, which is a golf cart ride from the main area, we loved the seclusion and seeing the moose family enjoy the salt lick behind the cabin. We could see the river bend from the bedroom area. Thanks Rawah staff, we felt so welcome, already thinking how we can come back with our kids next season!

We stayed at Rawah Ranch in early September and had the most memorable experience. From the moment we arrived, the staff went out of their way to be kind, welcoming, and helpful — it truly felt like being part of a family.|One of our favorite parts of each day was gathering for shared meals with the other guests. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner were all delicious, and the conversations and laughter around the table were something we looked forward to every time. The sense of community here is very special.|The riding program was outstanding. The horses were beautiful, well cared for, and matched perfectly to each rider’s ability. Every ride offered something different, from meadows to mountains, making it both fun and rewarding.|Fishing was another highlight. I had the chance to work with my own guide on the stretch of the Laramie River that flows right through the property — a truly incredible experience. Later in the week we took a trip to a nearby alpine lake where we caught plenty of big, healthy cutthroat trout. It was unforgettable.|We also enjoyed a great afternoon of skeet shooting, archery, and axe throwing — just one example of the variety of activities available beyond riding and fishing.|All in all, Rawah Ranch is a wonderful mix of adventure, relaxation, and genuine hospitality. Between the staff, the activities, the food, and the amazing guests we met, it was an absolutely perfect stay. We can’t wait to return.

All the wranglers are very professional and took us out for great family rides.|There many activities to do every day , the kids had so much fun and didn’t want to leave!|We definitely want to go back!

Located in a gorgeous valley on the Laramie River the Rawah Guest Ranch offers the best of everything. The activities were all fun, safe and well managed. The staff was extraordinary--very skilled at what they do. They were always attentive to making your stay the very best. The food was wonderful, as was the evening activities of hay rides, square dancing, cook outs, music, and a final slide show of all our adventures. The scenery and setting were magnificent--the views and all the wild life. We had a great group of guests the week I was there which always adds to the fun!! I've been to a number of guest ranches--this was the very best!!!

This self proclaimed “city girl” had no idea what to expect when I booked this dude ranch. We ended up having the absolute best time at Rawah Ranch!!! It was so special, so magical. We had a blast fly fishing, shooting clay and horseback riding. The ranch, all the staff, everything was amazing. They really take care of you and make you feel like you are family. We cant wait to go back and hopefully bring some family members. Thank you Tim, Meg, Talia, Olivia, Annie, Zach, Brody, Ty, Hallee, Durke, Kylee, Joe and the Chef. PS the food was also amazing!

We had an amazing family vacation at Rahwah Ranch this summer. This was our second time staying at a guest ranch, and we found this place to be a really special combination of luxe and rustic.||I was a solo parent traveling with two kids, and we stayed in the Old Bunk House. My kids LOVED sleeping in the cozy loft. Highly recommend this cabin choice if you have little kids old enough to climb a big ladder. Generally speaking this place was such a great choice for parenting solo - the whole staff was so supportive and helpful in looking out for my kids and engaging them in activities. They seem to genuinely like children.||I had a wonderful time riding horses and soaking up the incredible landscape without ever having to worry that my kids were bored or in danger. I also had a lot of quality time with the kids - one night I walked down to the river with my older daughter and we saw a mother deer out with HER baby. Absolute magic. ||One thing that really stood out to me about Rahwah is how well all the animals are cared for. The staff clearly love the horses and know every one’s personality. The ranch has a little petting zoo called Tiny Hiney and my kids completely fell in love with going there every day to do chores and look after all the little goats, etc.||Since we left, all we do is talk about when we might go back.

Truly a magical experience—unlike any vacation I’ve ever had. If you’re looking for a place to create core memories, this is it. The staff feels like they’ve been handpicked by management—every single detail is handled with thoughtfulness and care. This ranch elevates the entire idea of a vacation. From the moment you arrive, you feel transported and completely immersed in an authentic ranch experience. The horseback riding was incredible (with Haylee), and the fly fishing (with Zack) was the best I’ve ever done. But that’s just the beginning—the ranch offers so much more: archery, trap shooting, and countless other activities that make every day an adventure. The website and photos don’t begin to capture how immersive and unforgettable this place really is. If you’re on the fence—go. It’s worth every moment.

Yelp
We had an amazing experience @ Rawah Ranch last year. From the idyllic setting, wonderful rooms/cabins, to the food, staff, and stellar fishing. RR is a family run ranch and they make you feel right at home.

Yelp
Rawah Ranch knows how to make it all about you! Relaxing and unwinding is key to recharging your batteries. This place is a piece of Colorado Cool. Family ran with a little something for everyone be it Orvis endorsed fly fishing with exclusive private waters and instructors or world class Horseback riding with the one of a kind breathtaking trails only Colorado has and a new one in each direction for a new ride each day. Hiking trails are on property and just plain hanging out is a must. The food is inclusive and exceptional as both the head wrangler and the chef make a personal visit to each and everyone to find your personal wants and needs for the next day followed by the chef to let you know he has an afternoon cooking class. Individual Cabins make it personable. What a place! When you leave, you will measure your other vacations against your stay here. Just go!

Yelp
I cannot say enough about my experience at this ranch. The managers were gracious and friendly, as was the entire staff. The cabins and beds are very comfortable, food was first class prepared by an experienced and talented chef, horses were well-cared-for and the fly fishing guide was amazing. This was a first class vacation, if only for three days. Clearly the best three days this year!

Yelp
Rawah Ranch is the BEST. It's easy to get to from Denver Airport (or Laramie), the drive is spectacular, and the ranch itself, feels like home - without having to cook or clean - YAY. I just did a last minute trip and they couldn't have been kinder. We got in 3 days of fishing, I learned to trot on my horse. We had moose outside our cabin and the food and staff were lovely. I don't want to recommend too highly, because I like that it is my best kept secret. Meg and Tim run the joint and they have put together a great experience for us city slickers. I will be back for the 5th time, very soon.

Yelp
We had an absolutely wonderful vacation at Rawah Ranch. It is a truly a special place. The setting was more beautiful than we even expected and we could not stop taking amazing photos of the mountains, valley and Laramie River. We loved our cabin which was tastefully decorated in the appropriate ranch style with plenty of storage space and a spacious separate room for the kids. The food was amazing! Chef Ford blew us away at each meal and we were truly spoiled & stuffed. The ranch activities were a blast! We had wonderful personal attention and they were open to customizing our activities to what we were looking for daily. We rode horses daily and felt our assigned horses were perfectly matched to each of us. Our riding improved so much and the wranglers were all amazing with their knowledge and instruction. They had a fun evening activity arranged for us too. Aside from the amazing setting, the delicious food, the fun activities, the well-cared for horses, the comfortable & charming accomodation, the most impressive thing about Rawah was the awesome staff/people who run it. We have never experienced such fun, attentive, inclusive, considerate people on vacation and we had such a wonderful time because of all of them. We cannot wait to come back!

Yelp
Expect much more than a dude ranch vacation at Rawah ranch. Expect first class service, food and accommodations! Whether you are a couple looking for romance, a family needing time together or a group of friends, you will not be disappointed. Did I mention the food? Never have I had salmon like Chef Ford prepares! Leave your cell phone behind, unless you want to use the camera function. You won't even miss it as your day ends on a comfortable bed, with soft linens and a pillow which includes your choice or bamboo, buckwheat and more. The views from your trail ride will leave you breathless and the memories will last a lifetimes. Unwind, unplug and and unbelievable !!
