We were very happy to still get served at such a late hour and while there was no owner on site, we did have a lovely chef take care of us. We had the bobotie special which my husband claimed was the second best he had ever had and my pork chop, with grilled apple and sesame dressed veg, was both succulent and sweet. And for those of you who love a cat, lots of ornaments, books & paintings to keep you occupied while your food is being cooked!

A Hidden Gem in the Heart of Tulbagh! What an absolute delight! From the moment we arrived, we felt like cherished guests at a warm and welcoming dinner table rather than just another restaurant. The atmosphere is cozy yet elegant, the kind of place that makes you want to linger a little longer. The food? Simply delicious—every bite bursting with flavour, crafted with care, and presented beautifully. And the service? Wonderful! Attentive, friendly, and effortlessly charming, making the experience all the more special. If you find yourself in Tulbagh, do yourself a favour and visit this gem. It’s more than just a meal—it’s an experience you won’t forget!

I found myself stopping over in Tulbagh, drawn to the inviting charm of Readers Restaurant. The warm, rustic décor made me feel right at home. I ordered their famous BLT burger, and when it arrived, the massive portion did not disappoint. Piled high with crispy bacon, fresh lettuce, and juicy tomato between perfectly toasted buns, it was a delicious feast. Each bite was a satisfying blend of smoky, savory, and fresh flavors. Readers Restaurant was more than just a quick stopover—it was a memorable dining experience that left me completely satisfied. A solid four out of five!

We made a split second decision to pop in there late one afternoon and I'm happy we did! Best pork chop I've ever had and my husband, who is usually a steak snob, thoroughly enjoyed his meal. The waitress was lovely and friendly but gave us space to chit chat. Would highly recommend a visit!

South African soul food, felt like our meals came from a friend’s kitchen. Carol came by a few times to chat and check up on us. Would highly recommend Readers (and their wine list is also super). Great hospitality and would definitely return.

An absolutely heartwarming "soul food" meal made with Karline's loving hands . Best salad I've had in a restaurant made with crisp organic salad & veg from the Tulbagh garden across the road. Lovely soft atmosphere. A balm to a traveling person sick of mediocre restaurant food. Thank you

Ordered the Smoked trout with ginger and wasabi (the ginger and wasabi was missing) but it was very nice. Pork chop was also good

The restaurant is in a historical building from 1750. It is the second oldest building in Tulbach. The food was excellent and tasty. It arrived fairly quickly and the waitresses were very friendly, professional and efficient. The atmosphere is wonderful in this historic building with yellow wood making a large portion of the building material. The bathrooms were clean and well stocked with toiletries. The owner is a cat lover and there are cat statues at the entrance and two friendly cats that roam around the restaurant. Prices were also very reasonable. It is well worth a visit if you are in Tulbach.
