"Originally the centerpiece of a planned luxury resort, the Pagoda in Reading, Pennsylvania, has become a symbol for the entire town. Built atop Mount Penn in 1908 by local quarry owner William A. Witman, the seven-story Japanese-inspired building was to be the main attraction at a tourist resort. Unfortunately, Witman was unable to obtain a liquor license and the project’s funds dried up, leaving the majestic pagoda as a strangely out-of-place oddity. In 1910, the building and its surrounding ten acres were given over to a local businessman who, recognizing the iconic influence the building was beginning to have on the community, sold the structure and its land to the city of Reading for the sum of $1. Despite some neglect owing to anti-Japanese sentiment during World War II, the city of Reading has restored and cared for the grounds ever since, and the pagoda has indeed become the symbol of the community and has even been put to practical use. Before radio telephony was widespread, lights on the building were used to communicate via Morse code to local emergency workers, and today those same lights flash to alert the children of Reading that Santa is on his way. The building is open for visitors who can take in the picturesque, panoramic view of the city and examine the 16th century Japanese bell that hangs in the top story of the building. The Reading Pagoda may have begun as a gaudy tourist attraction, but it now stands as a testament to a city finding its identity." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

The Reading Pagoda is one of Pennsylvania’s most unique landmarks, sitting high on Mount Penn with breathtaking views of Reading and beyond. Built in 1908 as part of a luxury resort that never happened, the Pagoda has since become a beloved symbol of the city. Its Japanese-style architecture stands out against the Pennsylvania landscape, making it a must-visit for history buffs, photographers, and anyone looking for a peaceful escape. Inside, you’ll find exhibits on its history, plus a gift shop. The best part? The panoramic view from the top, especially at sunrise or sunset! Whether you’re stopping for a quick visit or spending time exploring, the Reading Pagoda is a true hidden gem.

The Pagoda in Reading is a really cool and unique spot to check out. The view from the top is awesome—you can see the whole city and the surrounding area. It’s peaceful and a great place to relax, take photos, or just enjoy the scenery. It’s also a great ride if you’re on a motorcycle. The roads leading up are fun, with nice curves and a good climb, and there’s plenty of space to park at the top. The Pagoda has a lot of history too, which makes the stop even more interesting. Definitely worth the trip if you’re riding through the area.

This spot is pretty cool,it's a long and winding ride to get here but it's totally worth the trip,we did not get to go inside due to renovations but it was cool just to see something that holds so much history, the view is pretty amazing,it was pretty windy up there but it was an unusually windy day in general. I would recommend anyone considering taking a trip up here to do it. If for nothing else then the experience of it. I think this would be a hot spot for watching fireworks on 4th of july

Great sunset views. Great place to take pics of ur car, great place to see the city lights at night n great place to view the mountain overlook. It woulda been a 10/10 but it’s a very sketchy area ppl wouldn’t stop blastin their terrible music which made it unenjoyable sadly. Luckily me and some other people bullied her into stopping but the loud music is a terrible problem plus the people up here who look like they wanna rob you for no reason. Cool spot tho otherwise

Typically a beautiful view; I happened to be there during the brushfire. But it is such a cool building with lots of places to look out over reading. I recommend going during the day and keep an eye out for the actual pagoda to open again, I was not able to go inside. There is a decently sized parking lot and sidewalks all the way up and down for walking. Many of the trails are closed off currently.

This place was amazing. It's like a hidden gem tucked away in Reading, Pa. We went at night because of course I wanted to see it light up. And it was everything I expected and more. The area around the budilding is gated and closed off...but there is still plenty to see from the gate. I need to absolutely go during the day to see more....but at night, you get the beautiful glow as well as the beautiful view of Reading ( which by the way is huge) A few tips: 📍in the evening, it is true that it becomes a hangout for the younger generation. ( there was a few cars and teens when we went, they were very nice and honestly didn't pay no mind) 📍The building is closed off to the public till further notice. It also states this on their website. 📍It's up a windy hill so pay close attention 📍It's completely free to the Public to go and view from the gate. 📍 It's Open from Dusk till Dawn. ( we went late at like around 10 or 11pm) Have fun, and take lots of Pics!!!

I loved this place. Spectacular view 💚. The Pagoda should be open to the public again to view it inside. Overall it’s really nice. Accesible parking 🅿️. Do not wear skirts or dresses it’s really windy 🌬️😄

The winding hair pin turns make the assent to the Pagoda an exciting drive. There is limited parking once you reach the Pagoda. Keep in mind you will feel the wind when you stop here. So be prepared. The view is grand and worth the drive to see it. I'd like to drive this again when the fall colors are showing. Overall a positive experience for a Wednesday in December.
