On the Grid : Readings Bookshop

"Set aside some time to purse Readings bookstore. It began life as a tiny stand-alone shop in 1969 and has since grown into it's current (larger) digs at 309 Lygon. Packed floor to ceiling, you'll surely have no trouble stumbling across something to tickle your fancy. Music, arts, film, recipes, architecture, children's books, travel...It's all here!" - Seven Seeds

Readings is the best bookshop in Melbourne. The quality experienced teams knows books and authors, what's in, what's out and how you get hold of anything you want. It's my go to 100% of the time, and that says everything.

Store layout and selection is excellent, however the staff are always soooooo rude! I know its xmas and super busy BUT older middle grey haired man at the register horrid , gift wrapper grumpy and dismissive, I actually had an anxiety attack and needed to exit it was such a stressful shop. I always shop local but will now travel to another Independent bookstore for future purchases. (Unless they employ friendly staff)

Needed a book for school for my daughter. Readings Carlton (our local) didn't have it, but they helped arrange with Hawthorn and I picked it up just before closing time. Very efficient. Fabulous service, thanks all.

I had pretty much the perfect bookstore experience here. I walked in looking for something obscure, and they had it. Then I needed advice about a gift for a friend, and after I described her, the bookseller (I didn't get his name) very quickly suggested the PERFECT book. My friend hasn't read it yet, but I know it's perfect for her, because I've read it myself. Yet I never would have thought of it without his help! Touché, Readings.

Readings Hawthorn has such a lovely bunch of staff who read widely, know their books and support local authors. They have a huge selection here and also open late. I highly recommend this local bookshop.

They have a great range of books, they know their stock well and make helpful suggestions, and they are always happy to order books in if they don't have them.

Just visited Readings Kids with my 2 small kids. My 5 year old just sat down quietly with one display book and the older lady with curly grey hair snapped at him ‘careful, it’s not a library’. There were several other kids flipping through multiple books yet my brown child was singled out. I wanted to buy my son the book but she wouldn’t acknowledge me - only acknowledging my white husband when he walked in. I didn’t want to give them business so I walked out and will purchase elsewhere. Sort your staff out. Microracism exists.

Just had a chance to see their new shop. Amazing, this place wants me to sit down and read!
