On the Grid : Record Paradise

"This record store has been running since 1955 and it’s the best place in Brunswick to source hard-to-find records, as well as easy to find ones. Renae and her Partner Paul have a great collection of local and independent releases that will have you browsing up a storm. It’s pretty easy to lose an afternoon here. Record Paradise also has a policy of never wasting a record, resulting in an epic yearly garage sale of 12,000 $1 records. If you’re lucky enough to be in town for this, don’t be foolish enough to miss it. If you spend so long browsing that you need a haircut, then head around the corner to their sister store “Paradise Cutters” and Paul will clean you up." - Smith & Thomas

I love this place! There’s no shortage of record shops around, but Paradise is aptly named for the collector (or even people like me, who like to think themselves such, but have no idea what they’re doing). I could’ve spent hours flicking through this amazing collection of records, but 10 minutes was enough for me to find an absolute gem, and it was only $10?! Super friendly and chatty staff too, though I hate saying staff. Just a cool dude selling records.

My son and I discovered this gem recently. We have so far declared it our favourite record store for their mix of new and used. I was in my element up on the ladder digging through the used section which were very reasonably priced.

Sadly, I walked out of this place feeling gaslit, heartbroken and angry. I was told returns or change of minds are allowed. The next day, I’m told they aren’t. It’s important to get these things on paper or on record. Otherwise you’ll end up like me - attacked by nasty and racist little she-devils who accuse you of misinterpreting what they’d said because you have an accent. Perhaps small businesses have become ruthless under the cost of living crisis. Perhaps Record Paradise couldn’t make rent this month - in which case I’m happy to consider the overpriced vinyl I purchased as an act of charity. If you could please provide a donation certificate, that would be wonderful. Happy to claim this on my tax return xx

Unfortunately Record Paradise is the most inhospitable record store I’ve come across in 20 years of digging Melbourne & surrounds. Especially don’t go in there with children & do not expect a welcome - even if you’re the only one in the shop. Very negative experience & will never be returning.

Lady at the front with short ponytail was so rude and had been experiencing some type of frenzy the day we asked if we could shoot in the shop, she said it would be 500$ and we were like all good, we ended up just wanting to look in the store and she proceeded to come up to us again saying "THEIR WILL BE NO MORE SHOOTS GOING ON IN THIS PLACE" in a aggressive tone whilst constantly giving us a rude glare the whole time in that place, I will never be returning back there.

Friendly staff and more records than you can poke a record needle at. The fact that they have bands Lp launches there also rock! Pun intended.
