Lovely store with a lot of great gifts! I live locally and stopped in today for the first time. I made a purchase and contemplated going back to the register to buy another item I saw as I was leaving the store. I opted not to due to the customer service I received at check out. The staff member was less than friendly and I felt like my transaction was an inconvenience. I would love to return in the future and experience a more welcoming atmosphere.

In the heart of Alexandria on King Street. Don't miss this gem of a gift and idea shop. Items for personal use, home decor, books, gifts, decorating services, and products, including upholstery. If you need a unique gift for family, friends, or baby, stop here before settling for something uninspired on-line.

Google
This is an amazing store. It is the place to go to for almost any occasion that you may need a gift including high quality souvenirs from your DC/VA experience. They carry wonderful tea towels that include ones depicting your university or state. They have a wonderful selection of soap and locations, specialty themed books, pillows and tee shirts along with fantastic greeting cards and children’s section. This is the perfect store to pick up and item or two to fill out that gift basket, VA/Alexandria themed item or hostess gift.

Very cute store in the old town Alexandria area! There are a lot of neat products here, and so much variety to look at. Some things are a little pricey here, but definitely work stopping by and checking it out while in the area! Glad we stopped by. And it goes back pretty far - it's larger than you might think!

I love shopping here and stop in often to find gifts for friends and family. It’s a well curated shop, but they lack customer service skills. No one ever greets me or asks if I have questions. It may be nit-picky, but as someone who has worked in a small gift shop before, I think it’s odd and unwelcoming.

This is a fantastic shop to buy unique presents for family and friends. They have a good kids and babies' selection and quite a variety of items for the nature lover, cook, cocktail lover or Virginia and DC specific items. Their selection of Jelly Cat is my favorite and we get a lot of birthday presents for classmates and friends here. I love to shop for my family for the holidays here and get unique presents while supporting a local business. The store is well organized and carefully curated. It's super cute. They also have a selection of Annie Selke rugs and furnishings. Great place to shop local!

Great selection of candles. Unique and interesting card games.

Google
Visiting from out of town and decided to walk King St and shop the boutiques. This place is filled with all kinds of items, perfect for gifting or for treating yourself. Everything from Declaration of Independence rocks/pint glasses to themed match boxes. Staff was so friendly, the store was clean and well stocked. There's a small clearance section. Some items are a bit pricey but there were price points as low as $4 and others on the higher end. When I went there was a clearance sale on Christmas items and I got these adorable Alice in Wonderland felt ornaments. Their self care/body section was filled with quality salts, lotions, soaps and serums. I spent a good 30 minutes shopping their small store so that I could enjoy everything they offer. If you're looking for something unique, local and quality, check them out!

Yelp
Came in just to window shop, but of course, I left with a Jellycat, lotion, and soap! This place is full of charming, high-quality items that are hard to resist. The lotion and soap smell absolutely divine. The store has a warm, inviting vibe and everything is beautifully curated.

Yelp
Cute stuff but holy shit are they unfriendly. Three adults and a kid walk in. They browse for a spell, sniffing candles and admiring the adorable Jellycat stuffies. They are followed the entire time by a tall, dour sales associate who busies herself counting dust particles on the shelf no more than 8 feet away at any time. When they eventually check out, to the tune of about $100, the other sales associate asks, "are you a rewards member?". Guest confirms she is not. Sales associate says nothing more. At all. Transaction completes. Dour associate stands next to sales associate, never once making eye contact with anyone. Adult in the party, visiting from NYC, remarks on the rudeness.

Yelp
Bad Vibe This store has some cute stuff but the people working there could use some (any) people skills. What a huge contrast to other shops in that area and it really stood out as a negative experience in an afternoon of shopping. We all left feeling sorry for the people who worked there thinking they must be suffering some great personal tragedies.

Yelp
Sister Kelly rushed into this store saying how it's one of her favorites on the main drag. As were entered behind her, we could see why. Quirky and eclectic home goods and gifts everywhere. Any decorating style you can think up, and gift or souvenir. This is one of those stores were there is so much to see, you will want to look up and down- everywhere. Easy to miss a treasure! Pillows, towels, candles, nick nacks, pictures, signs, food items too! Be sure to make your way to the back of the store too! If I had anyone I knew expecting a baby- I would have been in shopping heaven and I saw things that would be beautiful in a baby's room. Kelly grabbed a few items for home and checkout was simple and quick.

Yelp
I love this store. They have many cute stuff, but they are pricey. Also, the customer service is terrible. They always stand behind the register and they don't greet you. If they greet you, there is no eye contact. The vibes is not exciting. The store needs improvements with their customer service. Their sister store, Penny Post is awesome. They always greet you with eye contact and a a smile. The vibes are always positive and fun.

Yelp
My wife and I walked in here one day in Old Town and this is a really cool store. They have tons of items to purchase, whether it be toys, Christmas ornaments, tea towels, hot sauce, cups that are university themed or state themed and really cool Virginia or Maryland themed pillows. You can come here to get a cool/unique gift for someone or if you're visiting the dc area, a pretty cool souvenir. The shop is located at the top of the hill in Old Town. You should definitely stop by, even if you're just "window shopping", because there are so many cool and unique items in the store.

Yelp
Red Barn Mercantile is such a cute little store with tons of different items to purchase! I could see it being a wonderful place to buy unique gifts for friends and family. Additionally, the salespeople were helpful and kind. I will definitely be back the next time I am in the area.

Yelp
Love this store! It has a great section of kids' toys and games in the back, making it a perfect place to find a last minute baby or bday party gift. Also love the selection of Alexandria items and hone decor.

Yelp
Been here a couple times and while there's a lot of cute stuff and great gifts, the customer service is very off-putting. On a recent trip, I was in the store for about 30 minutes, mostly in the front section where the register is. Didn't receive a single hello or any acknowledgement from the staff. Instead, they spent the entire time loudly gossiping about neighbors while I and other customers browsed the store. It was a generally unpleasant experience. I think the store could also use a little more diversity or more open and welcoming attitudes among its staff beyond basic customer service skills. I love supporting local businesses and locally made products (which is why I like to frequent all the shops on King St), so it's extra disappointing to have to write this review.

Rich T.

Yelp
Great little shop - this is what Old Town Alexandria is supposed to be about!! Unique items that you don't see elsewhere, relevant "locals" items (e.g. university pillows, a pocket-sized version of the U.S. Constitution). And where else can you find a Christmas ornaments of Dr. Fauci, RBG, and a narwhal? (yes, I needed all 3 this year). I hope they are here a long time!

Yelp
I was roaming around Old Town today and popped in to this home decorator's heaven at my friend's suggestion. Now I can't get visions of boldly printed pillows, colorfully striped throw rugs, and oversized lamps out of my mind. I was totally going to make the Pottery Barn comparison, but clearly I'm not the only one who finds the stores to be reminiscent of one another. I'd actually say Red Barn Mercantile seems more like a Pottery Barn meets Anthropologie, minus the clothes. The products are much more unique and colorful than PB's selection (not knocking the chain- I'm a fan!) and the shop's much smaller and easy to navigate. When I become a home owner, I'm totally trekking up to NOVA to get my Red Barn on!

Yelp
I'm not sure how I haven't written a review for Red Barn yet, but I love, love love this shop! Since I work just a couple of blocks away, this has become my go to place for gifts. Basically, if you don't like what I buy you from here, I'm not sure about your taste... They carry a wide variety of items: children toys and books, fancy pants stationary ($20 pencils anyone?), cook books, coffee table reads, candles, soaps, kitchenware, and even rugs and furniture! Also, I'm usually not one to buy things for myself (except when it comes to food-I spend all my money on food), but this is where I treat myself. My purchases here have consisted of everything from an individual piece of caramel when I needed a sugar fix during my lunch break, to pitchers, cups, and coasters for a bridal shower gift. It's super easy for me to find a card for any occasion here too. They have lots of humorous cards, but also simple, classic ones too. The staff is really helpful when you need them to be (when I said I was looking for something white for a bridal shower gift, I was basically shown every single white item in the store), but they also leave you alone when you say you are just looking. The selection here does tend to be on the more expensive side, but they do have some great sales (I recently snagged a Leather Head football for almost 50% off!) I actually hate to see things marked down so low sometimes because it obviously means no one was buying the item (are there no sports fans in Alexandria?), but sorry, I'm always happy to take what you're trying to get rid of!

Yelp
I made a special trip to DC to shop early for the holidays and King street was at the top of my list. I literally asked the Uber driver to stop first at Red Barn Mercantile because it's such a lovely place to browse for unique gifts. They've never been especially friendly, but this experience actually shocked me. I had finished picking out a few gifts and was ringing up when the other salesperson (not helping me) grabbed it off the counter and told me it wasn't for sale because it went with a set. I was perfectly happy to buy the set but it wasn't packaged together and loosely displayed in bins and vases. Her attitude was so aggressive and shockingly hostile I actually took a step back and felt terrible. I truly should have walked out but had my heart set on buying a gift for my mom. If people are flying 3,000 miles away to shop at your store, wouldn't you make the effort to be professional, if not polite? I'll be posting this review on google as well.

Yelp
I try to come once a year when I am in town for the Scottish walk and sadly, I never fail to find gifts and trinkets I must have. I need a red barn in which to put all of my goodies. High quality, whimsical, nostalgic items, including a full sample wall of Dash & Albert rugs. Love this place!

Yelp
Overall: Great place to buy a few home items or gifts, but a little pricy. It's not a huge store (none on King St really are) but they do have a good variety. I was especially surprised to find the Lineas Lights candle in the "Winter" scent -- it's really hard to find! There are a few greeting cards, but not a ton. This is a good store if you have someone in mind who needs a gift, but you can't decide what to get them -- support your local businesses!

Yelp
My absolute favorite place to pick up gifts. This place is full of treasures and always has the most unique merchandise. Awesome kids department, and also a great selection of men's stuff- cocktail mixes, glassware, etc.

Yelp
Red Barn Mercantile is the antidote to cookie-cutter interior design. Often, when I look at an item sold at Pottery Barn or another home design store, a mental image of indentured workers in a sweltering Third World factory flashes in my mind. But at Red Barn, the image of the products and the store is of a gracious, inviting home, and of people who care enough about enjoying their surrondings to think about how others would enjoy visiting. These days, our family like many others is focusing more on traditional values and enjoying family times to be together...leaving behind the excesses of the madding crowd. Red Barn is a good place to build the interior environment that resonates with an appreciation for the beauty of what what john Keats called "silence and slow time" in his "Ode on a Grecian Urn."

Yelp
Such a fun and adorable store. There is one woman who works there and completely makes the shopping experience. She is warm and welcoming. Unfortunately, there is another individual who isn't the nicest... but like all retail you get that from time to time. I would highly recommend shopping here for all your odds and ends around the household.

Yelp
I am obsessed with this store! The owner, Amy, is exceptionally talented, as are the rest of her staff. They have fun and unique housewares and gifts. Great merchandise for all ages!

Yelp
Whenever I'm walking by on King Street, I have to stop in here! Red Barn has a country/rustic/vintage vibe with some more whimsical and classic pieces thrown in for good measure. This is one of my go-to "gift buying" spots--cute trays, mugs, pretty kitchen supplies, and a good selection of kid stuff. Prices are a little high for me personally, but there are occasionally sales that make it easier to justify buying bigger items, like their bedding. I also love that the staff is very friendly and helpful without hovering. The selection seems to change pretty regularly, so every time I go, there's something new to check out. Even if I don't buy anything, I'm always happy that I stopped in.

Stephanie N.

Yelp
I'm obsessed with this shop! Its my favorite store on King Street. Its true that price points are a little high but its worth it for the excellently and uniquely curated selection of gifts, cards, and home goods. And if you love cards, like me, don't forget to check out their beautiful paper goods shop right down the street - Penny Post!
google avatar

Randi F.

Yelp
Can I please live here? I love the bedding, the housewares, the toys and just the fun stuff up front. If i had millions i would have my entire house decorated with items from Red Barn. I loved the old location, but the layout of the new one is easy to walk through and well thought out. It is an expensive store, but it is an Alexandria boutique. I feel like it is right in line with those stores around it.

Yelp
Beautiful store in old town! I wish I needed/could afford the furniture and linens they sell. I end up happy with the pretty picture frames made from recycled wood and cute stationary though. The store is like a treasure chest, you look around and see something pretty or interesting on every surface! Super friendly people work here too. Way better than any chain home furnishing store.

Yelp
Nobody has written about this place? Well, I've only been in this store three times, but it has very cool stuff. Sort of Pottery Barn like, but more personal and unusual selections. Most of the furniture I can't afford, but you can pick up small unique gifts there as well. Clerks always friendly and helpful. Not many see this place because it's not on King Street, but on a side street.

Kate N.

Yelp
I'm not usually much of a window shopper, but this shop did catch my eye. I loved the displays of the home decor. Everything had a light, airy, beachy feel. My mother and I were the only ones in there, but something about the ambiance made us feel like we could chat while we looked around without bothering people. They had some really interesting candles (which I usually hate) with mild, unique scents. I love the idea of lighting a candle and filling the room with the smell of a wood burning fire place. Reminds me of when I was a kid - such a homey smell for me. I'm definitely bringing a friend back, she'll love it here.

Susan B.

Yelp
Red Barn is my favorite locally owned store in the D.C. Area! They have a wonderful selection of unique gifts and items of interest for anyone. I love that everything that they sell is mindfully sourced and always of good quality. I have purchased items as small as a candle to larger items like wool hooked rugs and pillows. Everyone who works at Red Barn has been very kind and helpful each time I visit. I gladly support this local business and I would highly recommend a visit!

Yelp
This review is way overdue....I bought a vintage iron bed fromRBM after searching for a while for a bed for my daughter. The owner and her mom apparently applied the finish to the bed themselves and did a great job. When I found another iron bed somewhere else I wanted the same finish so I asked RBM how to repeat the finish and they generously offered the prescription. I was impressed that they were willing to share the info. While I haven't shopped there in a while I have always appreciated that. They have a great mix of new and vintage items....it's like going to a flea market but finding well made items....it can be pricey but in essence you're paying the shop for finding special pieces and making them available to you. If you don't like or have time to shop for the perfect piece of furniture they provide a great service. It's a personable store with friendly help.

Wendy B.

Yelp
I love the merchandise - very unique - and everyone working there is friendly. Even the window displays are fun. Most of all, I love that my dog is welcome; he knows a big bowl of treats is waiting for him by the front door.

Amy P.

Yelp
By far my favorite store in Old Town and favorite home store in the area. Great place for furniture, linens, and one of a kind decorations and antiques. I try to stop in this place once every couple of weeks to check out their new items. Everything I've purchased here (linens, rugs, decor) has been the highest quality. The other reviewer mentioned Pottery Barn. I'd say this is much better because I'm not going to see the same couch I bought in my best friend's living room. The staff here is very friendly and accomadating. If your walking Old Town or in the area stop in...well worth it.
