Red Box Car

We stopped here for lunch. Things to note: CASH ONLY, but there is an ATM onsite. I did not see any indoor seating. There are Port a John restrooms that were clean. This was a cool little spot with seating outside and tables along the river. You order at the rail car, and they notify you when your food is ready. We had burgers, which were good. Our friends had milkshakes, which they said were really good.

Cute counter serve no frills place with beautiful outdoor seating (by the creek!) And DELICIOUS burgers! Even the veggie burger sooooo good! The fries are legit here 👌 CASH ONLY (but they have an atm)

Nice little stop right next to Rock Creek. The portions could be a little better for the price. All in all, great experience. Food was delicious, milkshakes were on point. Would definitely recommend.

Loved the atmosphere, right by the creek. The burger was tasty, high quality meat with just the right amount of sauce. Fries were great. Had soft serve, I admit I didn't love the vanilla, it wasn't Foster Freeze:) The chocolate was awesome though and tasted like Wendys used to. Two things to be aware of, it's cash only no credit cards and there is no inside dining.

Stopped in for a simple quick bite. Ordered chicken nuggets and tater tots. Waited about 5 or so minutes. Food arrived it was FRESH and hot! Service was great and quick. Just a good place to stop by and get some food!! Great view of Rock Creek!

Ok place. Customer service wasn't bad... but also not great. Food was just OK. We had a large group and mostly went with 6 orders of fry-bread tacos Note: this is a CASH only establishment, but they do have an on-site ATM (for a tiny place, out on the edge of this little town, it seemed a little odd 🤷‍♀️). Tables in the back right along the creek. That part was very pleasant. Do I recommend this place, eh not really, but for ok food a beautiful view, sure. Check it out. I thought the prices were OK just wish the food was better (and that customer focus perhaps a little improved)

Food was decent. The large fry is on the small side. I do wish that when I asked if I could have a different cheese they would’ve told me it’d cost $1. It’s outside seating only which is great to sit by the creek.

Rustic and fun. Creekside tables. Drive-in fare done well. Huckleberry shakes are awesome.

Great local stop for lunch or dinner. Great location on Rock Creek. I'm a creature of habit and never venture from the double works burger, fries and a shake. A must stop for tourists!

The burger and fries were great! Portion size was on par. Not a huge fan of their fry sauce but others I was with liked it.

The burgers are great and I love their shakes. Their creekside seating is really nice as well.

Visited here on a very hot day in July, they closed early due to the heat in the kitchen, kudos for lasting that long! Big selling point of this place is the location on Rock Creek. Had the chili cheese bacon burger, could not detect any green chili? Kind of a scrawny burger for the price, fries were additional but of fantastic quality, appeared fresh cut, not frozen. What brought the rating up to 4 stars was the fish and chips, coleslaw and root beer, both on the 5 star level. Sitting by the Rock Creek made for a great fast food dining experience!

The fish and chips are frozen greasy fish and fries. Cole slaw was minced up purple cabbage with zero flavor. Husband said his burger was good.

We were looking for a dog friendly restaurant, and the Red Box Car was the perfect choice! Hamburgers and fries were great, prices are very reasonable, and the seating was wonderful outside with a picnic table right beside the river. Definitely recommend this place. It was super!

Like Californias In-N-Out, but SOOO much better!!! You know those questions where you're asked what one thing you would want to be stranded on an island with? It would be Red Box Car. Or the thing you think about when you're pregnant and can't stop thinking about food? Red Box Car. Or what you want when you're miserably in a mess after a bad breakup? Red Box Car. The only thing you ever really want for Christmas? Red Box Car. So just do it, go get it. Don't worry about the long line, it's there for a reason! Don't worry about what you'll pick from the menu, you can't go wrong with anything. And don't worry about that diet, you know if you go get a salad you'll still be hungry or you can get Red Box Car and be full and happy.

Grabbed a cheeseburger and fries on the way by. Friendly staff but burger was RAW! Spit it out and threw it away. What a disappointment and waste of money.

I really wanted to like this little spot because Driving by it appears cute. Its lacking! The service is mediocre and the food isn't good enough to deal with the poor customer service. Unkept. Dingy. Run down. I hope the kitchen is cleaner than the rest of it. I have been here twice and will not be back and wouldn't recommend it. I asked for my burger to be "done" and when it wasn't I took it back and asked what I should do -all they said was I'll take it. Didn't say sorry, didn't say I'll make a new one, didn't say how did you want it, didn't say anything about anything. just handed me a new pager. Not worth it.

Killer breakfast burritos; even better burgers. Food overall probably has the highest quality for the lowest prices of any place in town serving traditional comfort food. Red Box Car also has the best views of any eatery in Red Lodge. A must stop.

Great burger for a good price. Bring cash, but if you forget, they have an ATM on site. Got to sit out by the creek and listen to the water while we ate. Great stop before going up Beartooth.

I loved the food here growing up. Stopped with the kids and ordered kids meals. One burger with mustard instead of ketchup, instead I got one with mayo? No worries I'll grab some napkins and wipe it off and put mustard on it. Two other kids meals were mostly pink inside, real pink. Suggestion: kit kids meals. The kids fries are the same size as the large and the drinks aren't much different. They do get an extra star for atmosphere. love eating by the river! I hope that management is able to get this place back to what it was before another icon dies.

If you are expecting gourmet quality food, this isn't the place for you. If you want a decent burger from a box car on rock creek, this is the place for you. Good ice cream.. might even catch a bear in the woods next to the box car. Fries are great! People are nice.

Do not come here thinking you are going to get gourmet food, to me though this is high quality fast food, prices were pretty good. The BLT was picture perfect and was beautifully toasted.

the blonde southern "belle" working the window today needs to find a new line of work she's obviously in the wrong one-completely rude to the two people in front of me and then to me so I left without food we won't be back. Shame.

This place is really solid. My wife and I had chicken Cesar salad wraps, and they were excellent for only about four dollars each. The restaurant is situated on a beautiful creek with lots of outdoor seating. It's always busy, so try to avoid the main rush-hour times.

We decided to stop here to have a quick lunch instead of the more expensive solutions downtown. Wow! I was actually impressed. The atmosphere was excellent with the creek running adjacent to the Red Boxcar look that this place is named for. We had burgers and I would rate them 5 stars for value and quality. The staff was average for mannerisms; not abundantly friendly but accommodating. About what I would expect from a fast food style place.

We always stop at the red box car when in Red lodge! They have the best cheese sticks...you can't go through life without trying these. The food is greasy, fast food but it's so good! It's a fun, well deserved treat after a long day of hiking. It's fun in the summertime because you can sit on the deck right on the river.

Wow, stopped in for lunch today at 12:55 pm and thought the line was a tad long, maybe four or five parties ( of two to four people)in front of us. As i got to the window to order at 1:20 pm i was told hold on a second and i then watched the gal walk back and forth in the kitchen a few times, never touced anything and then came back to take my order. The wifey and I each ordered a buffalo burger and shared a side of the fried green beans. Sounded great. At 2:00 pm our order was finally called. The food was pretty decent. Okay flavor on the burger, green beans were pretty good but all in all it was just a smidge above average. That said, I will never be back because of the wait...I mean an hour from getting in line to getting your food at an order at the counter, pick up at the counter establishment... No thanks. It was obvious the cook was cooking one order at a time and that is just ridiculous.... Next trip to red lodge I'm checkin out that taco bus.

Oh yeah! These are some yummy burgers! This is a cute little place that you can't miss when driving thru Red Lodge. This is our third visit to Red Lodge and every time we go by, this place is busy. Tonight, we found out why! You place your order and they announce when your order is ready. Poor Ben (I have no clue who he was) but they called him a bunch of times. Anyway, we both got the buffalo burgers. I got sweet potato fries and my hubby got onion rings - which were HUGE. The burgers were so good! The sweet potato fries were good and crunchy and the onion rings were perfect. And best of all, our meal didn't break the bank. There is seating outside along the river. Or you can venture indoors if one of those afternoon thunderstorms is moving thru. Great food in a cute place. It's a must do when in Red Lodge!

My friend ended up in the ER after her and her husband contracted nasty food poisoning from this place. I went and they weren't wearing gloves. Used the microwave to cook burgers.

Cheese burger was basically McDonald's quality. Phili cheese was pretty good and their shakes are good. Quick service. Right off the river, pretty neat location just needs a little extra something.

Understaffed for a busy little place. Have always loved the box car but 3-7 items were incorrect. Our milkshakes were given to us only after asking and still had to wait fir another to be made. The box car is a novelty just like the quick stop in rockvale but 30 min for two of us to not get what we ordered is not the box car of the past. Maybe the kid standing there watching the other three work should have helped out.

The burger was pretty good actually. However, the kids chicken nuggets were completely mediocre compared to the delicious chicken tenders. Also, the girls forgot to give the fries and toy with kids meal.

Absolutely best burgers I have had this side of the Mississippi!!! Fast, delicious and hearty. I will eat burgers from this traditional Box Car every time I come to Red Lodge.

So glad we stopped here. The best milk shakes in the area, especially the variety. The food was good and it was a good place to catch a quick bite!!

Decent enough burger, but I'll have to echo some of the other reviews. Got our order wrong after we repeated it to the counter guy twice. Took a long time even though it wasn't busy. I asked for extra fry sauce (he gave me only one tiny cup) and he tossed a couple more at me. No thanks guys. Next time we'll eat elsewhere. Don't need your crappy attitude and poor service when there's plenty of places to eat in Red Lodge

Gross greasy burgers. Have to wait 30 mins for this. Its Red lodge what can I say. Nevet again had a upset stomach for a day eatting here.

Small portions. Got our order wrong. Didn't realize it until we got back to hotel so we has to get back out in the rain to get the rest of our food which had been ready and sitting there so was not hot by the time we got it. They knew this and didn't seem interested in compensating us for the inconvenience.
