I was in Whistler for the Film Festival and decided to stay a bit longer afterward to relax, wind down the year, and enjoy some of the local culture. One of the highlights of my extra time was dinner alone at Red Door Bistro. The food was excellent, every dish came out quickly, cooked perfectly, and full of flavour. The service was just as memorable. The staff called me by name all evening, which felt warm and genuine. You can tell they care deeply about what they do and the food they serve. The restaurant might be casual by nature, but it still feels refined and special. I’d recommend trusting their suggestions, they clearly know their menu.
Reservations were easy to make, even by email. Because it’s a small place, Tuesday night was the only time they could seat me. My reservation was for 8 p.m., and since I would’ve been driving home around 10, I decided to extend my stay so I could enjoy dinner without rushing. I’m glad I did, it was worth it.
The space is cozy, and they’ve made the most of it by fitting in as many tables as possible. I think that comes from the best intentions, wanting more people to experience what they’ve created. When you walk in, there isn’t much room to wait, so it’s best not to arrive too early. A covered, heated patio for winter would make things even more comfortable while keeping the same intimate feel inside.
Partway through my meal, though, the atmosphere completely changed when a couple came in. The man began projecting his stories across the entire restaurant, speaking so loudly there was no way not to hear him. His stories were extremely graphic and violent, describing fights, choking someone, and being banned from downtown. He told them in a way that sounded boastful, almost as if he saw himself as a hero in those moments. It was disturbing and completely out of place in such a small, refined setting.
The staff noticed immediately and handled it with remarkable professionalism. They checked in on the table often, trying to calm things down without creating a scene. Any stronger action would have made things worse, and I completely understand why that wasn’t possible. Eventually, I asked to have my food packed to go. They responded quickly, applied a promotion I had declined earlier to make my total cheaper, and even sent me off with a dessert to enjoy back at my hotel next door, Nita Lake Lodge.
Despite the situation, I left feeling grateful for how the team handled it, calmly, respectfully, and with real care. The food and service were excellent from start to finish, and I plan to return with my partner to experience the full evening properly next time.
