19 Best Restaurants in Bali, Offering Indonesian Classics, Vegan Tasting Menus, and More

"Red Gunpowder is a contemporary Indian restaurant in Pererenan, the charming and lower-key neighbor of Canggu on Bali’s southwest coast. The dark dining room is illuminated by candles and strings of fairy lights, and rustic wooden walls and tables are surrounded by greenery that spills out to an open-air terrace. It makes a dreamy backdrop for a feast of claypot curries, dishes like slow-cooked octopus marinated in fragrant ginger masala, and an array of hot and char-speckled naan. (Try the unexpectedly delightful blue cheese variety.) Cocktails like the Curry Mule and Masala Chai Sour, infused with Earl Grey tea and homemade masala syrup, are just as clever and unexpected. On the first Wednesday of the month, the restaurant hosts a sitar night, when an already-romantic meal is set to live string music." - Regan Stephens

We had an amazing dinner at this Indian restaurant in Bali! The cozy, beautifully lit atmosphere in the evening was perfect, and the food was full of flavor – not too spicy, just right. We had the Jackfruit Curry with saffron rice – a 10/10 and the Samosa Tartelette as a starter, which was also super tasty. Great to see that most dishes had vegan options, too! 🌱 Prices were slightly higher but totally fair for the quality and experience. Highly recommended! 🙏🏼

Red Gunpowder is one of those places that just hits different. The red lighting and cozy vibe make it feel super intimate, like you're stepping into a whole new world. The food? Honestly, amazing. I ordered lamb biryani, butter chicken & cheese naan. They were spot-on with the perfect mix of spice and flavor. It’s just really authentic Indian food that hits all the right notes. The staff is super chill and helpful, making the whole experience that much better. If you’re looking for a fine-dining, romantic spot with great food and intimacy, Red Gunpowder is definitely worth checking out. Will definitely go again! 100%

A bold and flavor-packed dinner spot with a modern Indian twist! We had the chicken butter (Methi), octopus, beef tartare (a new addition!), and the standout: Barramundi Tandoor Saag. Every bite was vibrant and layered, especially when paired with their fluffy saffron rice and garlicky naan. The space is eclectic and full of character, elegant with a subtle retro flair — and if you happen to be around on the 18th, don’t miss their Bollywood Vinyl nights. The vibe turns even more electric. We finished with the Blue Dream tea, and honestly, it was the perfect wind-down after all that spice and joy. Definitely a place that feeds your soul and your senses.

Red Gunpowder in Pererenan is an absolute hidden gem. The ambiance is magical – warm lighting, lush greenery, rustic wood architecture, and a cozy, intimate vibe that feels like stepping into a movie scene. The food? Simply outstanding. The tuna with caviar was incredibly fresh and flavorful, a perfect balance of richness and acidity. The grilled octopus was tender, smoky, and beautifully plated. And the Indian-inspired dishes – the curry, naan, and saffron rice – were full of authentic spices and comforting warmth. Every dish was served with care, and the presentation was top-notch. Service was friendly and attentive without being intrusive. It’s the kind of place you want to come back to, again and again – whether for a romantic dinner or a quiet night with friends. Highly recommend!

Red Gunpowder offers a refined, creative take on Indian cuisine that brought out flavour combos I haven’t really come across in Melbourne. The butter chicken came with these crispy papadum-like bits inside — unexpected but kind of worked and added a fun texture. The blue cheese naan leaned more toward a brie-like flavour, super creamy, and the cheesy naan overall was a standout — perfectly toasted with that gooey melt when you bite in. The samosa was more of a deconstructed version, like an open Indian taco, and while the concept was cool, it was a bit too sweet for me. The biryani had an awesome presentation, almost like a pie with the rice tucked under pastry — loved the creativity there. Flavour-wise it was solid, though a few bites of meat were on the chewier side. Curries aren’t massive, so getting two is a good idea if you’re sharing. Also had the chicken bites which were fried to perfection. All up, a modern and memorable Indian dining experience.

I ordered two drinks, expecting to get a free curry, but it did not include the lamb And they tried to charge me for pork belly that I did not ask for. Also, I ate here a few nights before and did not think the curry was very good. It was very sweet. Some people might like that and they might love it, but I like a little more layers to it. It was more of a gravy and to their credit on their menu, they do mention the word gravy so…… Great atmosphere the food quality is good it just was not my flavor. And in typical body fashion, the service was impeccable all smiles. Anything you need anytime you want it they were just great. I’d give it a try.
