20 Unique Outdoor Escapes in the United States

"Alabamian’s roots run deep in red dirt, and Red Mountain Park in Birmingham, Alabama understands the value of this land. Consisting of more than 1500 acres stretching nearly five miles between the cities of Bessemer and Homewood, the park will make Birmingham the city in America with more green space per capita than any other. This land marks the spot where Birmingham began, where iron ore miners of all backgrounds worked hard toward a common goal, to contribute to the growing city.  The site of the park was the primary source for rich iron ore deposits that prompted the founding of Birmingham back in the 1870s, and the park takes its name from the mountain that it surrounds. Using the mountain and other geological features to support 20 miles of hiking trails, 50 acres of meadows, and a 22-acre fishing pond, Red Mountain Park wants to empower every visitor to reclaim this historic land." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Loved the sensory trail and how inclusive it is (was a scout's project). Visited one of the mine shafts and it was such a nice cool breeze after having walked for awhile. There was some reading on the history, too.

Thomas Lampman

Google
The trails were marked pretty well. They have good spots with info maps. Kinda wish the rope walks were open, we walked to mine 13 and was pleasantly surprised as to how cool the area was, was a nice break from the 90 degree temp.

Google
It's a pretty fun trail. Almost got lost because I didn't read the map. Don't forget to pack extra water. However if you're hoping to go inside the minds you will be disappointed.

Google
Normally I've always gone to the dog park, but decided to hit the trails with the pups this go around. I did not realize how large of a park this is!!! So many neat spots and info to check out. Loved the rope bridge to the tree house such a beautiful view. 😍 I'm a huge fan of this park! There is a donation box in the entrance that is optional so don't forget to bring some change or a few dollars. It goes a long way to upkeep beautiful public spots!

Google
One of my favorite places 😉 to hike, bike, jog and enjoy the outdoors. Very conveniently located and parking is easy. Almost everyone I come across on the trails are friendly. Main trails are wide and accessible. There are some narrow challenging trails through some of the hills that are great. A nice view of downtown from the back end of the trails. Some very historic mines and other structures as well. There is also the paved high line ore trail going out from the Venice Drive entrance that is very good for road cycling. M

Cool park with lots to do. Looks well taken care of. The dog park is excellent. Very clean

Google
Wonderful Dog Park with plenty of shade for your pup and different sections for big dogs, small dogs, and special needs dogs

Misty Lane

Google
Coming from out of state we were a little disappointed that it hasn't been kept up. The hiking was fun and the historical sites are decent when the signs are provided to explain what they are. I did read the zipline was closed prior to visiting but was not expecting it to be falling apart and with no hopes to reopen.

Yelp
Nice nature & hiking trails with some obstacle course spots that remind of Army basic training obstacle courses. The parking lot is pretty big, but people were still parking on the street. The trails were pretty muddy with all the rain we've gotten lately. They do a good job of posting the maps frequently and directional markers. I was trying to find the sky bridge but unsuccessful this go around. It wasn't marked on the map.

Yelp
Went here 10 years ago when it was first being built.. now it's exploded. Dog parks are great. Love the no haggle lack of entry fees you get at other greedy American nature "ownership" parks
google avatar

Yelp
I have visited Red Mountain Park several times. In fact my son completed his Eagle Scout project there several years ago. It is free to go to Red Mountain, but sometimes it can be a bit crowded.. There is a private parking lot where you can park. I have never had a problem finding a parking place, but I know some people have. It is a great place to take a hike. Also a lot of people bring their dogs. They have a new sensory area which is cool. Plus swings that you can swing in.

Yelp
Red Mountain Park is nature at its finest! The park is located conveniently in the backyard of Homewood Alabama. Great trails, wildlife, old mining shafts mining ruins, and a mountain that boast about 1200 feet of elevation is an absolute great day trip and excursion!

Yelp
An amazing escape within a major city. It is easy to escape the stress and rigors of modern city life and walk through a well tended path and simply decompress. It is easy to forget that you are within the urban sprawl of the city of Birmingham, Alabama here. There is a tranquility not often associated with these metropolitan shrines to steel and asphalt within these paths. It is a peace that settles within your soul and speaks to you on a primal level. We need these respites from the modern day world, we need to ascend back to the soil from which was born creation. We need to remember that we are more than what we created, these cities that reach beyond the clouds and appreciate who and what we really are.

Yelp
Lovely place to go. Very peaceful, great for hikes. There were several people there during our visit and everyone maintained distance around each other. There were also places to sit occasionally if you needed to rest. The hiking areas were pretty clear as well. Very peaceful location.

Jim W.

Yelp
I went there with a friend and we were amazed by the Easy access, big dog park, wide trails.

Yelp
We went hiking at Red Mountain Park and had a decidedly disappointing experience :-( To begin with, the hike wasn't particularly strenuous or challenging. Additionally, the signage was poor (complex trail names and no distances shown). We didn't have either the inclination or the energy to make it to either of the "viewpoints" so we weren't particularly impressed by the natural beauty of the place. To be fair, there are a number of mine ruins, which I found potentially interesting, but you're not allowed to inspect the ruins from up close so we decided to pass.

Yelp
Macey was begging me to let her do another review so here you go. Hi furry friends and humans. I had so much fun reviewing the Loch Haven Dog Park that I couldn't wait to share my thoughts of Remy's Dog Park. Remy's is a big park, but only a small part of Red Mountain. It's a short trot from the parking lot, My human says it is a five minute walk, but I like to take my time. I can make it a twenty minute sniffy-walk, and I love the tree-lined trail. There are three separate playgrounds. The smallest area is designated for special needs friends (physically challenged, elderly, injured, or shy). I think that is super! There is a small dog and a large dog playground. I didn't notice any height or weight guidelines so your human will need to use their judgement. I went to the large playground today. I like the layout. The front half is heavily wooded and the trees provide plenty of shade. The back half is a huge open field that is great for running and retrieving. There are a few benches for humans to rest on. Remy's is popular, and I made a lot of friends today. I met a yellow lab puppy that looked like me, I wrestled with a lab mix named Jose, and I played with a Doberman who was much bigger than me. And, my parents ran into some friends who recently adopted a pup named Sadie. Yay, they talked about planning a future play date. Signed, Macey the Golden Pup

Yelp
Beautiful park with plenty of trails and views to behold. Located near the iron mines that built Birmingham.

Yelp
A natural gem tucked in the outskirts of the city! This park is great for guest of all ages! There are a variety of hiking trails with various difficulty levels. Whenever I visit I never find the same thing twice. Always something new to explore. Recently one of the old mines was excavated and you're able to stand at the entrance and feel a spectacular blast of cool air coming from within the old mining tunnel. Great for history buffs, hikers, or anyone curious about the origins of the iron industry of Birmingham. Great place to fuel your curiosity and get a few miles of a workout in! They also offer zip lining and an adventure park for more structured activities if exploring the unbeaten path isn't your thing. Fall months are a great time to stop by as the sun isn't blaring. Bring water bottles!
google avatar

Jay T.

Yelp
A true treasure in the heart of the City. You would never know that you were in the middle of a major metropolitan area - well, that is until you get to one of the overlooks or the treehouse and you see these AMAZING views of Birmingham's skyline. Miles upon miles of trails range in difficulty, so the whole family can have a good time. I've done the zipline course, and it's some of the most fun that can be had in the City. Plenty of parking is available, but bring your own water and go to the potty before visiting!
google avatar

Lexi K.

Yelp
My fave go-to hiking grounds! The trails are nice with a variety of intensities. There isn't a cost of admission but they do rely on donations to keep this park as nice as it is, so those are appreciated. Another reason I enjoy this park is that it is less likely I'll encounter another dog off leash compared to some other hiking parks. This is so important because my dog is dog reactive. I want to still be able to take him hiking but also knowing that he isn't placed in a difficult situation. I think the fact they have a dog park helps this matter the most. They also have zip lining but I have never personally done it here. If you haven't been out here, you should put it on your to do list.
google avatar

Amy M.

Yelp
Love this free park for hiking! So many different trails of different levels of difficulty. They also have cool tree house/lookout structures on a couple trails and the old mining ruins you can see on the trails. Wear shoes you don't mind getting red dirt on (doesn't come out easily on white/light shoes).
google avatar

Angela P.

Yelp
Beautiful hike. There are so many trails and really neat historical parts of the mining of the mountain. Best overlooks, old structures and rails. It's a wonderful outdoor experience so close to the city. Some places are a little strenuous but fairly easy. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Ira B.

Yelp
A couple of years ago, I started walking the trails in Red Mountain Park. The park has a convenient location, with plenty of parking. There are so many trails to choose from, with all levels of difficulty, from flat surface trails, to more challenging hiking hills, to a sky bridge and even a small dog/pet area. I've always felt safe inside the park, and I've seen police patrol the parking lot to ensure security. If you want to get in shape, stay in shape, have a picnic or just get some fresh air and walk some fun trails, this is a great place to go.
google avatar

Tara L.

Yelp
Red mountain park is a great place for hiking and taking your dog for exercising. The views are great and it's well kept.
google avatar

Delia S.

Yelp
This place is simply amazing! There are so many trails and they all are of different difficulty, so there's probably a trail for everyone. I think some of the most difficult ones were Trail 5, 16, and I think number 8. Make sure that you go to the end of Trail 15 to see the view of the city. It's really breathtaking! They also have an adventure part of the park. But it was closed when I went. The dog park is so cool as well. You can literally spend every day here, it's so relaxing. I loved it!
google avatar

Jenn C.

Yelp
Invited here to do my first hike and was told to wear old good shoes bcus of the red dirt. Scared but motivated lol. Get here and see a hundred cars. There is a BCBS event today and the people are just plain muddy. Lord have mercy. It has stormed the last few days. Everything in me is saying goooooo homeeeeeee but I'm going to try my best. It was a muddy mess but what a beautiful park that I had no idea existed. We walked a bit to get to the hiking point and I instantly thought wtf am I about to do when I saw the incline but I wasn't about to be punked. I should've known it was going to be bad when I saw a sign that said "Most Difficult". My friend is a Trama Medic in the Army who just got home from deployment and a nurse at the VA so if I was to die surely she'd bring me back. Smh. That was my actual thought and I expressed that vehemently to her. The hike was hard and I'm sure I developed asthma by the time we reached the top but I'm eager to try again next Saturday. It was hard but fun. Coming down was even crazier but I did it. Didn't fall but definitely conquered a fear. The trees seemed to be strategically placed to help you pull yourself up. The rocks as well but you need shoes with good grip. No need to be cute or think that you'll come out the way you went in. The views were breathtaking on the hike and walk up. Even though I was already completely breathless anyway. I wished I'd had a good camera for the views I saw. Yes I had my phone in my fanny pack but it wasn't doable. It just wasn't.
google avatar

Chelsea L.

Yelp
What a blast! During our entire hike we only saw 2 people and that was as we were exiting the park. We visited immediately after a flash flood and it was a little muddy, but nothing to complain about. Lots of fun places to stop and check out. Didn't see any wildlife, that was disappointing.
google avatar

Daniel C.

Yelp
It's a very pretty park with plenty of walking and biking trails. The park is clean and the trails are well-maintained. I will be sure to come back again!
google avatar

Tracie P.

Yelp
Red Mountain Park has a number of wide, well-maintained trails that traverse what was once land for a mining operation. There are some artifacts of the mine you can view on the trails. The trail also features two treehouses -- one is an overlook that is easily accessible and the other (farther into the park) requires traversing a suspension bridge. Near the park's entrance is Remy's dog park, which is one of the largest dog parks in the southeast. There are three parks -- one for small dogs, one for large dogs, and another for senior dogs. Most trails are easy to moderate, but there is one strenuous trail on property. This is also a popular spot for mountain biking, so be sure to stay on the right side of the trail to give bikers adequate space. This is another great scenic spot in the B-ham area.

Yelp
Red Mountain park encompasses 1,500 acres of land along the Red Mountain Ridge outside Birmingham (15 minute drive from downtown)! The park contains 14 miles of trails, 2 city overlooks (partially obstructed by some industrial stuff, to be fair), 3 tree houses, a dog park, and more. You can also use the zip line if you're so included (we didn't). You can also hike to several historic iron ore mining sites. We spent about two hours hiking and exploring Red Mountain Park when we were visiting Birmingham last weekend, and it was great to spend some time outdoors. The hiking was pretty good - although the views were sometimes obstructed by industry or telephone towers. It was interesting to see the historic iron ore mining sites! And it was fun to see the goats - the park has 150 goats that intended to graze on kudzu and other invasive species in the park! We happen to be hiking by at one of their meal times, so we saw them all walking along in a single person line making their way to their food. We focused our hiking on one side of the park - next time I'd definitely try the other areas that we missed for something different!
google avatar

Brooke L.

Yelp
Love this park! The trails are challenging and always find a cool artifact along the way.
google avatar

Emily C.

Yelp
Red Mountain Park is absolutely great! It offers many different trails of a variety of lengths. I'm not a super outdoorsy person, so I enjoy how clear and easy the trails are! The park also has designated places to set up hammocks that are an easy 10 minute hike from the entrance. The park is so serene with lots of cool views! I definitely recommend checking it out!
google avatar

Tan S.

Yelp
Sooooo PEACEFUL and clean. The scenic route has so much history. They also offer zip lining
google avatar

Marie S.

Yelp
This park is fabulous! My boyfriend and I brought our 3 dogs there and although 2 out of 3 of the dog areas are temporarily closed the 3rd park area was still spacious enough to let them play with all the other pups with plenty of room to spare. We can't wait for the other 2 portions to reopen, we know they're going to have a great time. Also, we did the zip lining and OMG was that a blast! Our guides, Byron and Luke were educational, informational and hilarious. Seriously recommend these two, they're a hoot. Hands down the best park ever, can't wait to explore the rest of it!
google avatar

Heather B.

Yelp
Red mountain park is one of my favorite parks in Birmingham! We mostly go to bring our 2 little dogs to the dog park and they love it! The 3 separate parks are perfect for us as we have an energetic puppy who likes to run around and play with the big dogs, and an elderly dachshund who just likes to walk and enjoy the outdoors. With there being 3 parks (big dog, small dog, elderly/special needs dogs) we don't have to worry about our old man getting trampled by the big dogs. We have ventured only a little bit further than the dog parks to just walk and be in nature, but the park from what we have seen is kept clean and free from litter. A great place to go and get out of the house during covid-19!!
google avatar

olivia m.

Yelp
Red mountain park is a great place for family's and furry friends! We bring our dog here every week to play in the dog park with other locals and their fur babies!
google avatar

Michelle N.

Yelp
Red Mountain is one of my favorite places to hike around Birmingham! It's very dog friendly, and there's a whole section dedicated to a dog park. It's very cool and shady here and today was a fantastic day to hike! Beautiful greenery and 75 degree weather. There's so much to explore and hike here; there's a zip line, a tree house, old mines, giant wooden chairs and more. Every time I come here, I pick a different trail so I never get bored. All the trails are well maintained and clearly marked, and they all loop around (eventually) so even if you get lost you'll find your way back. Definitely recommend Red Mountain!

Jessica P.

Yelp
I really love this park. Im glad that it is 5 minutes away from me. You can tell a lot of care has gone in to it. I love that i can go run on some super nice trails!
google avatar

Kevin N.

Yelp
I typically go to Red Mountain to go on a nice, casual hike with my dog. Not only is Remy's Dog Park located here, but they also have great walkable trails. The dog park here is huge! You're little pup will be able to run to his/her heart's content in the enclosed areas! As far as trails go, even the most difficult trail one wasn't too bad in my opinion. All the trails are beautiful and very scenic. You won't regret any of the trails you decide to take!
google avatar

Julie R.

Yelp
We actually went to the dog park part of this park and had an absolute blast. The only negative thing I can say about it and I do understand because the temperature temperatures are fluctuating so much is they had the water turned off where the dogs go to drink but we have brought our own water as well as many other people so it wasn't that much of an issue. The dog had a blast which was the whole reason why we went. We will definitely go back and do some hiking next time

Patricia E.

Yelp
Had an incredible time at this beautiful park! Scenic, well-maintained, and so much to see!
google avatar

Kayla G.

Yelp
Red Mountain is probably my favorite spot as of lately to go hiking at. The trails are fun and have beautiful views but also aren't too tasking and are easy for beginners/bringing a pet along. The park is always impeccably clean and kept up and I think that's amazing for being a park ran almost entirely on donations (minus zip-lining costs). My favorite part about the park however is the dog park/(s). They have multiple areas for big/small dogs and even "special needs" or older dogs. And there are always a lot of dogs there. The space is huge and always well kept like the rest of the park and always has toys there and water for the dogs. Overall just a nice place to go.

Laurel M.

Yelp
I went zip lining at Red Mountain Park with my sister and nephew on the Mega Zip. It was a great experience and I will go back. You could spend the day at the park or only a few hours zip lining. It is perfect for visitors and locals and fun for any age. To read a full review and details of our experience doing the Mega Zip, you can visit RoseColoredWandering.com.

Yelp
I'm ashamed to admit that it has taken me this long to review and also visit Red Mountain Park. Now I'm happy to say that I've finally been here. What a big park! This place is full of long, clear trails with beautiful nature everywhere. There is also a LARGE dog park-more on that later. A lot of the pathways are flat, which is nice for an amateur hiker like me who would prefer to walk or run a long way. It is also clearly marked and easy to navigate, which is a plus! My only concern about it is that my wife has seen two snakes here when visiting recently-one on a main pathway and another on a smaller one. The one that I saw appeared to be a copperhead by its color and how big it was. Obviously we ran from it and turned around to get away from it while it crossed. I realize that is part of nature and there are critters like this in the woods, but just keep your eyes peeled when walking or running the trails. Ok, so....the dog park, Remy's, is just off a small walkway to the right when you first come in to the park after parking. It is awesome. I didn't realize how much room there is for the small and large dog section. Each area has a shaded part where the dogs can run around under the trees, and then a large open field area for them to run around and get their energy out. There is also a water bowl station for when your pooch gets thirsty, and a few benches are available in case you want to rest your legs. All in all, a beautiful place and definitely the best dog park I've seen. I will definitely come back, especially in the Fall and Spring when the weather is cooler and there are less critters around.
google avatar

Rocio Y.

Yelp
This is a great park for all of the family! They have a dog park incorporated into it that separates the different sizes of fur babies into small and large, so that they can play with their own sized buddies. They even have a special needs dog section aside for older or injured pups. Just make sure your pup has their rabies shot tag when you take them. There are different kinds of trails, ranging from flat and clean to steep and rugged, perfect for a challenge on your bike, if you're into that. There are many different length trails as well, and even one that leads to an overlook where you can see the city from up high. Definitely bring some water and wear sunscreen, and enjoy a day long relaxing hike.
google avatar

Michael P.

Yelp
I had no idea this opened by my office. Very nice park, but it does close at 7 PM, which is quite early in the summer. Excellent trails, parking, and even has porta-potties on site. I can't wait for the midday temperatures to cool off enought for me to come at 4pm and not die of heat exhaustian.
google avatar

Kelly N.

Yelp
Beautiful Park. Easy to navigate. lots of dogs which was a huge perk! Certain paths are busy but graces gap was lovely and very quiet. Cool rope bridge at the end onto the overlook.
google avatar

Tatiana A.

Yelp
Loved coming here with the kids. Our first time hiking ever so it was such a memorable experience. The trail is a good length and has a lot of ups and downs. It did start raining that day but the trees covered us enough to where we didn't get soaked.
google avatar

Paige R.

Yelp
I took my oldest dog last week for a fun afternoon of quality time. She and I enjoyed a beautiful day together in the wonderful facility there. We made some new friends and she got some good exercise. The only suggestion I would make would be for them to repair the water source there. We brought our own hydration but other dogs were needing some and the spicket wasn't working. We ended up sharing with our new friends. We'll definitely go back. I love that they have a senior citizens dog park area too. Both of my dogs are double digits in age so when the regular area is too full, we have options to relocate should we need to play at a more relaxed pace.
google avatar

Justin W.

Yelp
Great park! Free admission to walk, run, cycle as much as you want all around these well made trails. Open for pets. They also have lots of really neat ropes courses and climbing and zipline action in here. This is an easy active life win decision. You can even get a decent view of Birmingham from somewhat far away. Give yourself at least a couple of hours to walk around a good bit of this park. Much more if you want to try to do it all.
google avatar

Cooter W.

Yelp
Nice park. Entry is free! Hiking trails. Zip lines.
google avatar

Matthew Y.

Yelp
Five stars? How about five paws! This dog park located just 0.11 miles inside the entrance of Red Mountain Park has become my favorite closed-in venue for dog adventures in Birmingham. There are three areas for different types of play spaces: small, large and special needs dogs. The small and large dog areas are conveniently placed to include roughly 50% shaded area and 50% open terrain (special needs is entirely wooded / shaded). While the park is theoretically free due to the generosity of Ken Jackson (who often frequents the park named after his late best friend) there is a small suggested donation for entrance to help keep it well-maintained. It is a great place for any animal lover and being located inside Red Mountain Park means the fun can continue on the neighboring trails and paths.
google avatar

Vinny A.

Yelp
This park is absolutely amazing! I did the Red Ore Zip Tour with a group of friends and it was a great experience. It was 7 different ziplines, a tarzan swing, and a rope course. The experience is worth the price, the guides were very friendly and made it more enjoyable. If I lived in Alabama I would be at this place every month. They've got so much to do and the staff is so nice. Definitely recommend going here!
google avatar

Jeff W.

Yelp
Flew out to Birmingham to watch a Bama/ LSU game. Wanted to try something outdoors. Guiliana was awesome to get us on the Vulcan tour with short notice. Our guides were really awesome and fun which made our experience that much better. Bethany and Tyler make a great team. Thanks for making our day! #Starfishflasher

Lindsey K.

Yelp
Beautiful park. But unfortunately our window was busted out and our wallets stolen. So bring all of your belongings with you!
google avatar

Nazary N.

Yelp
Just an overall awesome park. I went to do the Hugh Kaul Beanstalk Forest with my girlfriend and loved it. Worth every penny. It's really well done and the harnesses make you feel super safe. The challenges themselves are pretty fun to figure out - although I'd avoid the "rock wall" segment. Also the skateboard like thing was really hard to master - I never did. Our guide was really friendly and let us explore on our own but was present to respond to questions. Afterwards we hiked around the park a little bit more and just enjoyed the views. I wish I lived close so I could come back.
