Where to Eat Aboriginal Cuisine in Adelaide, Australia

"Located on the banks of the Torrens River in the suburb of North Adelaide, Red Ochre Barrel & Grill was the first restaurant to showcase only-in-Australia foods when it opened 24 years ago. 'Our most popular dishes are the grilled kangaroo, the fried crocodile fish cakes, and the pan-roasted barramundi,' said executive chef Ray Mauger, who sources from Indigenous co-op farms whenever possible. My entrée of grilled kangaroo (a gamy, lean meat with higher levels of protein and iron than beef) was flavored with quandong, a wild peach favored for its nutrition and medicinal uses. For dessert: a panna cotta of lemon myrtle and sunrise lime, an oval fruit that tasted a bit like a kumquat." - Veronica M. Stoddart

We had an incredible dining experience at Red Ochre! The food was absolutely fantastic, beautifully presented, full of flavor, and truly memorable. The service was equally outstanding, with a warm and welcoming atmosphere that made the night even more special. A special shoutout to Sophia, who went above and beyond to make our evening perfect. When she found out it was my wife's birthday, she surprised her with a delicious chocolate mousse and strawberries, complete with a thoughtful birthday message on the plate. Such a lovely touch! Highly recommend this restaurant for anyone looking for great food, excellent service, and a wonderful ambiance. We'll definitely be back!

A Bittersweet Dining Experience The restaurant boasts a truly remarkable culinary offering. The dishes we tried were masterfully prepared, with balanced flavors and impeccable presentations. The venue's ambiance is also quite welcoming, setting the perfect stage for what should have been a special evening. However, what could have been a memorable experience was seriously marred by service that leaves much to be desired. Problems began to pile up throughout the evening: after finishing our plates, we had to wait more than 15 minutes with dirty dishes on the table, something unacceptable for an establishment of this caliber. The situation worsened when they brought us the wrong dessert, different from what we had ordered, demonstrating a lack of attention to basic service details. But the final straw came at payment time: the cashier showed concerning incompetence in not knowing how to apply our discount, a situation that almost cost us an additional $100. It's truly a shame that such outstanding cuisine is overshadowed by such poor service. Despite the excellent food quality and pleasant atmosphere, the terrible customer service makes it impossible to recommend this place. I don't plan to return until they make significant changes to their service staff.! Pros: Delicious food Pleasant atmosphere Good location Cons: Extremely slow service Poorly trained staff Order mistakes Problems handling discounts

Had a lovely dinner booked through First Table app. The staff was extremely accommodating -- we informed them that we are in a rush and they got the food on the table very quickly. Nice food, lots of variety in the menu. Some dishes are more of a value for money than others, and while some are more interesting and exquisite while the others less so. Overall, a nice experience in a lovely location.

Our experience at Red Ochre was incredible from the second we entered the restaurant. Service from all staff was outstanding. The food also outstanding. Our daughter is a very fussy eater, however rated her steak a 9/10. Thoroughly impressed from start to finish, and definitely plan on dining here again next time we are in Adelaide. Fantastic works guys!

The food are overpricedand the quality definitelyneed to be improved. The steak cost $48 and it tasted like chewing gum, we ordered median rare and it came out be be well done. The restaurantrefused to change to dish as well. All the desserts werenot tasteful. This restaurant should be closed down already. DO NOT COME I have seen through some of the comments On google, looks like this restaurant treats their customer's reviews like trash and use every excuse to pass the buck instead of improving the quality and themselves. One of the worst ding experienceswe have ever had, we ordered some of the food and we felt like the quality were not good so we asked for the waiter the check with the cook, and they returned with the same plate saying it is definitely fine, I wonder did they taste their own food before? Again, DO NOT COME! WORST DINING EXPERIENCE IN ADELAIDE

This place is perfect for special occasion with good view over the river. I’ve heard that the sunset over here is magical, but my booking was after sunset, maybe I’ll come back next time with earlier timing. The food was great, esp the bread and the entrees was really exceptional. The mains were great as well but what really highlighted were the entrees. Very good selection of wine list too. The service and the attention were really good as well, the waiter will drop by every now and then to check if you need anything and if everything is ok. The atmosphere was a bit noisy as there’s so much chatting and laughing going around. So it may not be so ideal for business dinner if you wanna discuss something really serious but if you’re looking to please some important guests, this place will not fail you. Did I forget to mention their slow cooked lamb? It’s so flavourful and melt in your mouth, it gave us the wow effect when we put a bite into our mouth. Really really awesome!

I hadn't been here for years. A while back it was my go to. The atmosphere certainly hasn't changed - it's fantastic. It's still the same high end feel, with plenty of space between tables and perfect lighting. It was a cold May evening so the balcony was closed but I'm sure, when the weather is warmer, it's just as brilliant out there as it is inside. The view is probably one of the best in the city and not hindered by the fact you’re inside, the high ceiling and glass walls let you see everything. Our wait staff seemed a little inexperienced compared to what you would expect in such a nice place. Helpful, courteous and pleasant to deal with, just not as sharp as someone with more years under their belt. I'm guessing restaurants are just another industry that's been struggling to find staff lately. We'll definitely be back and soon. On our next visit I'm sure these guys will be perfect. Venues that have a free car park right outside their front door are rare these days. Red Ochre has a huge car park with plenty of space so you can park easily and not worry about someone backing into you because of a lack of room. Being able to casually pull in and walk a few steps to the front door is almost unheard of nowadays. The menu has been reduced in size since I was here last. But the options are still varied and the addition of the ‘let us feed you’ style dinner is welcomed. The meals we had were absolutely stunning. Octopus Carpaccio and Chicken Parfait to start – both perfect. The bread has always been amazing here and this was no exception. Mains were Gnocchi and Beef Cheek. I haven’t tasted Gnocchi that soft and fluffy since Andre’s Cucina. The wine was very nice but honestly if they could put the sauce from my Beef Cheek in a wine glass I would’ve drank that instead – it was delicious. The price was good too. We expected to be shelling out quite a bit but we had an amazing two course meal, two glasses of superb wine each plus a side for not much more than you’d pay for a pub meal. We’ll be back here. A lot. A+++

A nice restaurant with beautiful water view. Friendly staff, good & romantic atmosphere. We had the chef's choice to celebrate our anniversary. Lots of food, all were very delicious. Highly recommended.
