"Established in 1898 as a bordello for lonely miners during the Klondike Gold Rush, the Red Onion Saloon in Skagway, Alaska, preserves the town’s seamy history by operating a brothel museum on site. The ground floor saloon remains a bar and restaurant, but the establishment’s days of providing additional services are long gone. In the 1900s, the Red Onion was a popular dance hall, and the space still hosts live music events and drag shows today. There are plenty of items on display throughout the restaurant. Racy, old-timey portraits of alluring women adorn the walls and visitors can enjoy a glass of beer underneath a rather extensive display of bedpans. Upstairs, the museum showcases the 10 original rooms where the saloon’s madam and her girls would entertain their clients. Each room had several doors in case a quick exit was necessary. Customers chose women by picking from one of the 10 dolls placed at the bar, each representing one of the working ladies upstairs. When a doll was chosen, it was laid down on the bar, indicating the woman was at work. When her client came back downstairs, the doll would be seated upright, to let potential customers know she was available. Legend has it that Lydia, a former madam at the saloon, haunts the place today. The smell of perfume down the hallways or particularly cold spots near the upstairs rooms are considered signs of her ghostly presence." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

"The Red Onion Saloon, originally a brothel during the Klondike Gold Rush of 1897, is now a functioning bar and brothel museum. The building has served various purposes over the years, including as a bakery and telegraph station. The current owner, Jan Wrentmore, purchased it in 1978 to preserve its history."

Great place to stop for a cold brew. Spent 2 days here. Great atmosphere, and the service was amazing. Great history behind this place.

The Red Onion Saloon in Skagway is a fun and historic spot to visit, especially if you're stopping in town from a cruise. Dating back to 1897, it’s packed with character and charm, and the history of the place really adds to the experience. We came in for the reindeer farts (yes, that’s a shot!) and to soak up the fascinating backstory. There's even a brothel museum you can tour for for a small fee if you're looking to dive deeper into its colorful past. A unique stop that’s worth checking out for the drinks and the history!

Allison Haney

Google
This is a fun place, if you don’t shock too easily. Service was good. We didn’t do the brothel tour but the schtick is cute. The salmon dip is great! The nachos are the WORST good looking nachos ever. As you can see from the picture, there was no cheese under the top layer. They looked so good when they were served. VERY disappointing.

Bill

Google
The brothel museum tour was informative but very short, under 30 minutes. The tour consisted of a 15-20 presentation and then a self guided walk through three bedrooms. Definitely not worth the cost of admission if you got it with a cruise excursion. I'm not rating the actual saloon or service because there was a 40+ wait for a seat. So I wandered down the street and had a nice time.

K FP

Google
Fast service, waitresses in fun garb. Food was tasty. Place is packed. Upstairs is a brothel tour, $20. If a queue, the host will take your name and call you in when ready, we waited 20 mins in September.

Kentrell Charles

Google
Yes, great experience. Just a 5 minute wait but worth it. The staff really enjoy working. The reindeer peppermint shots are a must. Bar is well stocked and lots to choose from. Quick and excellent service.

Stopped in the Red Onion Saloon during our port of call in Skagway, AK. This place was actually a real saloon during the gold rush and the staff wear period costumes representing a time of before. Our server was Scarlett and she was not only a good waitress, but also gave us a little history of the infamous brothel when it was operating as such. We ordered their famous salmon humus and it was fantastic and hit the spot. Likewise, the drinks were cold and very good. For a splash of Skagway history this is a really cool place to check out. Plus, the staff is friendly and courteous.

Randy G

Google
Definitely a tourist stop, but then 99% of the people in downtown Skagway are tourists. A short wait and we sat right at the window. My wife had an Aperol Spritz and I had an Alaskan Amber. Chicken quesadilla and chicken bacon ranch wrap for me. A very expensive lunch $76.15 including tip but the service was good, and it’s all part of experiencing Alaska.

John D.

Yelp
we took the good time girls ghost tour mid - september and thoroughly enjoyed it. Madame Purity ran out tour and she was dressed in period costume. she walked us through the streets of Skagway and regaled us with tales of the town and the Women who engaged in "negotiable Love" she dislplayed her shimmy technique and taught it to us so that we could safely traverse the streets of Skagway. we learned a lot about what the women (sometimes Girls :( )went through in the mining town of Skagway. there was humor but M. Purity still took a moment to go over some of the harsher - uglier - truths of life for the good time girls of the town. the tour ended with a run through the upstairs of the Red Onion Saloon where we got to see what it must have been like to work there. we would take the tour again, and so should you, if you are ever in Skagway

Yelp
A definite tourist trap, but make it fun...I guess? This bar is historic....like 1897 historic. It's a place that many people talk about visiting if you're spending a few hours in Skagway from a cruise pitstop like we did. There's a brothel museum that you can check out for $20. We came here to simply have a beer and people watch, which seems like what everyone else was doing to be honest. If you're just walking around anyway, you can come here for a quick beer with your party.

Beckie N.

Yelp
Very cool saloon that used to be a brothel. Staff is very friendly. Only had a drink so don't know anything about the food. Try the Reindeer Fart which is their specialty

Brandee M.

Yelp
It was a must come because this is THEE place in Skagway- they have $20 brothel tours which I didn't do but I did sit at the bar and had a Reindeer Fart shot. They know people come in for the name so the prices are a little higher. The service was average to poor as the bartender was just not the friendliest lady knowing it was a port day for cruisers. I had the salmon dip which was very good. it was fresh and the portion doesn't look big but salmon dip is heavy so this was a good amount! I was pretty happy with it. I probably wouldn't come back here though.

Beth C.

Yelp
Salmon dip with pita bread was a great treat. Seating was a bit crowded and a cozy with nearby tables. Friendly staff in saloon costumes.

Bonni R.

Yelp
Fun place to hang out for a little respite from siteseeing and shopping. The history is very interesting and better than the food. The pizza is a little soggy for my taste - I like a crispy crust. And the ratio of meat to bun on the pulled pork sandwich was a little lacking. But the service is fast and friendly and there's so much to look at.

Michelle R.

Yelp
Rise & Shine cruise excursion. Upon arrival, the madams from the Red Onion Saloon hopped on our bus for a warm welcome. Walking in, the madams place a garter on your arm as a souvenir. The morning drinks and pastries were set up for us at the bar. The drink selection included bloody marys, mimosas, and Irish cream coffee. The tour continued to the second floor where the brothel rooms and memorabilia were located. Amazing to see some of the original decor from over a 100 years ago. The tour guides were exotic and humorous, they highlighted the history of the Alaskan working woman during the gold rush. Fun tour!

Nancy V.

Yelp
This is a fun look back at Skagway history. The food is good and the staff is friendly and attentive.

Andrea R.

Yelp
Cannot miss, a must-do when visiting Skagway! We stopped by for for the 'quickie' tour and had a blast. The cashier was very nice; the tour guide was hilarious. This your made our stop in Skagway even more memorable than expected. The vibe was very upbeat, we did not have time to eat but while waiting for the tour to start we were envious of those dining in. The portion sizes looked big and everything smelled delicious.

Lisa B.

Yelp
We didn't come for the food but did the tour. Great tour, fun staff and really informative. We enjoyed it and recommend. Tour is about 20 mins and covers the upstairs of the bar

Andrew T.

Yelp
Stopped by during a cruise stop in Skagway. Around 30 minute wait which wasn't ton bad. Got the salmon soup and Sassy Potter pizza. Both were great. Great ambiance as well with all the waitresses in corsets. Workers were friendly and informative.

Loretta T.

Yelp
We had one amazing tour of the Red Onion Saloon & Brothel in Skagway, Alaska!! I highly recommend this tour if you are ever in Skagway, Alaska and ask for "Shirley", she was the best tour guide we have had on any tour!!! I hope "Shirley" will check this posting out!!

Adam M.

Yelp
Really cool place, pretty pricey though. We had a few drinks, didnt eat. We did take a tour around the old Brothel upstairs, really cool and I want to say it was only $10 per person and lasts 20-30 min.

Christa M.

Yelp
This was the best part of our Alaskan cruise. Loved the shots, adored the tour. Would love to just come back to Skagway via flight or ferry. Such a wonderful history.

Corey R.

Yelp
This is a fun place to stop after you ride the train. One of the few bars in town. It used to be a brothel back in the day. They have a brothel tour they do every once in a while. Probably not worth it. The waitresses are dressed in period corsets. We had the chips and salsa which were surprisingly good. They have a number of beers available from Alaska.

Carrie T.

Yelp
On our Alaskan cruise we did the Skagway 'Good times girls' tour - it was interactive of sorts. Good information, the town has a great deal of charm! If we do another Alaskan cruise, we will definitely do the tour again and visit Skagway again. Our 'madame', Georgia Peach is GREAT!!!

Wendy F.

Yelp
Had the signature shot - reindeer fart, Alaskan brewery beer, and the nachos add chicken and guacamole. The service was a little slow but this is a huge tourist draw and the town was crowded. The tables are super small and the place is pretty small. The beer was cold and the shots were fun. The nachos were just ok with the chicken and jalapeños being a little scarce.

Dianna M.

Yelp
Cool Saloon! Lots of history with a well deserved underlying vibe of respect. We had an absolute blast with Bet-tine (?) A. Sheets (I wish we would've asked for her actual name). "Bet-een (?)" conducted our "ghosts and good times girls" tour and she was an absolute riot. She was able to stay in character the entire time. I have a video of my husband doing "the walk" as they crossed the street = absolutely hilarious! Aside from the frivolity and fun, she taught us much about local Alaskan history. It wasn't pleasant, they certainly were not good time girls, they suffered tremendously! The reality was harsh, grueling and deplorable. 2022- We cannot relate to what most of these citizens went through. The gold rush? Bah! I would've never left the comfort of my home. No, not even lured with the promise of becoming rich.

Ric T.

Yelp
The Red Onion Saloon and brothel museum are located on the main drag in town, the saloon being on the first floor and the historic brothel on the 2nd. The brothel is celebrated was a working one during the Gold Rush, late 19th century & early 20th. Tours upstairs are booked in advance. Very Interesting presentation. Downstairs try their salmon chowder sandwich with a local draft. Excellent. If you go there to eat, I think you should do the tour TOO.

Kerrie D.

Yelp
A fun and fanciful Saloon and a definite hub on the main street of Skagway Alaska! I ended up at the Red Onion after a walking girls tour of the town, which basically gave all the history of prostitution in Skagway during its brief gold rush period. The upstairs of the Red Onion is a museum to the working women of Skagway. The downstairs is a commercial saloon, kind of loud, crowded when I was there, but fun and comfortable all the same. Food looked good, although I didn't stay to try anything. There also aren't that many places to get food here, so definitely check them out!

Steven O.

Yelp
Super cool local Alaska Bar in Skagway, which by itself is a supercool spot! Okay so originally a Brothel from back in the late 1800's this great stop has retained all of the quirk and charm! As I sat here enjoying some local Alaskan Brews I could almost see the " Ghosts of the past" sauntering upstairs for a " Romp" The gals are all dressed in time period garb, and really seem to have fun working here! The " Madame" of the house will be glad to give you a Brothel Tour where you can go upstairs and see " where the Business happened" of course it's all in fun, very historic and a great stop, when visiting Alaska, just to get a shirt and say " yeah I've been there! The servers are super friendly and the beers are very cold and the food was also pretty dang good too !

Scott P.

Yelp
The only food related reasons to eat here are because they are the only place in town where anchovies are available for a pizza topping, and the chili with beans is ok. The other reasons to visit are the well stocked bar, the range of draft beers, and the colorful and friendly waitstaff. The tour is amusing. The place is packed because it's close to the cruise ship docks. Super touristy. Very pricey. There are better food choices in town.

Renee L.

Yelp
Pizza and salad very good. Service was excellent and atmosphere fun. I recommend the pizza the crust is very good.

Gabe B.

Yelp
Back in the day, men came here to get some "pie" now a days people come here to get a different version of pie. We tried some beer - the spruce tip blonde, which was surprisingly good and the pilsner. Followed by a couple of hot pies - The Sassy Potter - and the Lady LaVoie - both were dang good, but the Sassy Potter takes the cake. The old "pots" on the walls to the ladies on the wall the decor was lots to look at. Fun spot to stop at. It's small, so be prepared to wait a bit for a table.

Linnea K.

Yelp
This place was packed and our party of 5 had to squeeze around a 4 top that was very close to neighboring tables. Despite the close quarters, we really enjoyed the fun atmosphere! They were out of several things on the menu, but the food we did order was great - we had the Sassy Potter Pizza, Quesadilla and Chili. Also enjoyed the Skagway Brew Company Spruce Tip Blonde.

Bill C.

Yelp
It was a fun atmosphere, gets crowded when the ships pull into town The bear and food were good and the atmosphere was fun

Rangsima G.

Yelp
The hostess told us there would be a 40 minute wait to be seated (for 2). However, the party right after us with the same number of people were seated immediately. Then the next Asian couple were told the same wait time. The hostess didn't even look to see if a table was available for them. In short, it seems to appear that the hostess was discriminating against Asians.

Ellis T.

Yelp
Great atmosphere and the drinks were delicious. We had Bloody Mary and was one of the best I ever had.

Paul B.

Yelp
We had 3 appetizers, all were delicious. Staff were great, very fun!! Such a throwback in time. Very cute decor. I do wish the bar area was cleaner.

Melissa B.

Yelp
Went here for dinner on a recommendation and was not disappointed. The pizza was very good and the staff very engaging. Awesome saloon vibe and great place to relax after a day of exploring. If you find yourself in Skagway for any reason, this place is a must.

Jouquetta B.

Yelp
I booked the Good-time Girls & Ghost tour and everybody said I was gonna have a great time. BOY did we! So much history, so much interaction with our guide, and all in all one hell of a tour! I can't recommend this enough and will gladly refer people to this place!

Siria C.

Yelp
Pizza was good and thin crust. I ordered to go and I was quoted 25 minutes but it was closer to 20. It was $40 so pretty pricey but worth trying.

Adam B.

Yelp
Is it a tourist trap? Yeah, probably so, but still, stop in! Brothel tour signs, toilet seats adorning the walls, the random disco ball, old school country music on the radio. Not an atmosphere I can say I've seen before. It felt like stepping back in to the Old West, just way up north. Bartender was super engaging, we each had a drink and went on our way. I wanted an Alaskan Amber but they couldn't get the keg hooked up, so instead I went with a Space Dust. Mom is not a Bloody Mary fan, but after getting a recommendation she tried one, and she enjoyed it, so that's quite the compliment for the bar staff.

Nita T.

Yelp
This place was happening. They were packed in the middle of the day. We ordered local beers because we were in a time crunch. The service was outstanding. The servers were dressed from the era of Wyatt Earp. They have a tour you can take to see what the brothel was like back in the day. Lots of fun. Wish we had more time to eat and take the tour. Hope you enjoy!

BP R.

Yelp
A tour of the Red Onion is a must for Skagway. Historic and Entertaining. The tour includes a champagne toast. We were there with a large group of folks from our cruise ship, so I would have liked to have been able to spend a little more time going through the museum. Not the Red Onion's fault, but our group was too large and the tour too short based upon the size of the group. Not for small children and young teens.

Don L.

Yelp
Great food and lots of fun. Get here early as soon as they open if you can. We feasted on pizza and pulled pork with coleslaw and chips and a side of salmon chowder. Yum. Our waitress was very nice, patient while we stumbled through the menu. The only complaint that I would have is the meat to bun ratio is a little off. With that being said keep reading! The bun was fabulous by its self it could have been the star of the show. Pulled pork... need I say more? The fat/sauce/pig ratio is spot on, great job on the pork. Coleslaw again a serious contender for the star of lunch, shredded cabbage not too sweet not so much vinegar to change your body's Ph and just the right amount of creaminess. Put it all together and with just a little more pork everything would have sang a beautiful melody. On to the salmon chowder, if you can remember the best cream based clam chowder that you have ever had and replace the clams with salmon goodness it is superb. Pizza!!!! I never even got to taste it the rest of my party had it consumed before I had evaluated the chowder. Their opinion is anytime you can get a pizza and a beer in a brothel before noon on a weekday is a good day! Remember drinks only no food served at the bar, don't homestead at the tables there is usually a line of people hungry for these girls. Tip your server!

Darlene L.

Yelp
When we went to enter the Red Onion the door came open toward me on it's own as if inviting me in. We were told that a friendly lady spirit does roam the establishment. We ordered a few rounds of Reindeer Farts while we waited on the upstair tour to start. They say it is like Christmas in your mouth. It was tasty. The upstairs tour is fun and educational. Overall a great time!

Kelly M.

Yelp
We did the Walking Girls tour on our cruise and LOVED it. We did our tour in early July and Our Good Time Girl was amazing - Ashleigh. She had great stories and kept us entertained the whole time. Super important to hear the stories of the women who worked and how they had to take care of each other and built up these mining towns. We learned about their community and the issues of safety, pregnancy and stds. All are difficult topics to navigate on a tour with so many different kinds of people but Ashleigh tackled these important issues with grace and care. Women's safety and healthcare is a delicate subject and she handled it beautifully. It was just such a great tour and so well done - great learning experience. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Trisha L.

Yelp
I cannot say enough great things about The Red Onion!! I love that they had Alaskan beers on draft!! It was the only place we were able to visit on our cruise to Alaska that had Alaskan beers on draft. Fabulous!! The food was good too. We shared a huge nacho plate and a wrap. All were delicious! We sat at the bar and the bartender was wonderful! All of the staff members were super friendly and many of them stopped and chatted with us. I love the bed pans on the walls and would love to learn WHY they are there!! We took the tour of the brothel and it was totally worth it!! We even got to keep a souvenir garter!! Love it! If I lived in Skagway this would be our neighborhood hang out for sure!

Maggy B.

Yelp
Super fun little place to catch a drink and see a historic building. We didn't eat, so I can't speak to the food, but the people were so nice and the bartender was patient with us while we asked a bunch of questions.

Nikki G.

Yelp
I booked the Ghosts and Good Time Girls tour through my cruise ship. I'm so happy I did. It was so interesting hearing the history of Skagway. Our "Madame" was awesome and so funny. My favorite is when our Madame taught us the proper way to cross the street in Skagway, at least the way a Good Time Girl would cross the street. I love that each person on the tour got a garter belt from Madame before the tour started. The tour is so much fun! We did end the tour at the Red Onion Saloon and got to check out the brothel upstairs. Unfortunately, I didn't get to eat in the restaurant but I loved the atmosphere.

Nick S.

Yelp
A must when in Skagway. The girls are hilarious and a lot of fun. The tour is actually very informative and fun. The food I can't speak too but looked very good and the staff was amazing!!!Definitely hit up these girls for good time....

Kelly S.

Yelp
The place is definitely a touristy type place and has some interesting history so it definitely is worth a stop. I did order a bloody Mary and it was pretty rough to get down. I would recommend trying something else. The staff was nice and dressed up in period clothing for the red lights district history. Service was quick. They have tours, when we went they had 3 times posted, none of which were around the time we stopped in. The tours were $10 for a 20 minute tour. They also have a small gift shop in the front. Check it out for the historical significance

Lucy M.

Yelp
We had a great time at Red Onion Saloon! Our waitress, Katie, was awesome! Thanks for the best afternoon! Good and drinks were great!

Dede C.

Yelp
Ate here and had a few beers the last time we were here but this time we just took a tour of the old upstairs brothel area which was actually quite informative and interesting. Really enjoyed hearing about the history of the building and what went on there. And you get to keep a Gary we belt for a souvenir from the tour.

Amber L.

Yelp
We stopped here for a bite before our walking tour with one of the lovely Red Onion Ladies. Pizza was so yummy! And a "personal is definitely enough to share if you are looking for a small bite (; I forgot our tour guides name but I didn't forget the eerie stories or history she shared on our walking tour of the town. We booked it through our cruise line however they offered tours on site every 15-20 minutes of the Red Onion Saloon. If you don't have a walking tour that includes this I highly recommend just heading there on your own. They have tons of original historical artifacts from gold rush that are very cool. The tour of the building is pretty short but they are very well informed on their building and the towns history. I meant to share my cool photo with the girl who hosted our walking tour so fingers crossed she sees it here and also thinks it's cool!

Yelp
Fun time, food is just warps and nachos. Wait Staff was great in a small place wait time to get in after 2 cruise ships were dropped off was about an hour. But plenty of shopping to do.

Yelp
This is a fun little bar in Skagway, Alaska. It is not a huge place but you can have some good laughs here. Upstairs in the 1890's, was a brothel. You can go on a tour nowadays for $10 per person. I have heard that they do the tour tastefully and in a way that is okay for children to attend. We skipped the tour but sat for a beer. Service was friendly and swift. We sat at the bar and it was interesting being enough place that sold. I couldn't help but think about all the history there. It is a loud and boisterous place. They have regular bar food to choose from but we ate a lot coming off a cruise. I think this is a must-see in Skagway. There are t-shirts and mugs you can purchase as souvenirs. This is a very famous bar and it is right on the corner so it is easy to spot. People seemed happy here and the drinks keep flowing.
